Violence in Sport
« on: October 11, 2014, 10:03:00 pm »
Now sport has always contained a lot of violence, sometimes for the better. How far is too far?

Today in the Rugby League Grand Final this happened.

In Hockey we see fights all the time. Football less so, though some horrific injuries do happen.

Thoughts on the place of rough play and fights in sport?

They stopped murders in a Mexican prison by allowing them to box to solve their problems. Most fights last 1 or 2 rounds.

Football doesn't have a lot of fights because punching a guy in the helmet isn't very effective. The defense is not on the field playing the opposite defense. You have many chances to get back at a player with a tackle and unlike hockey you get ejected or your team uses some serious yardage if you're responsible for a fight.

As for hockey. Some of the fights are "staged" meaning; There is no conflict. A team wanting to send a message and gain momentum. You can also basically gain a "time out" during a fight and kill the oppositions momentum. Removing fights in hockey has usually opened the game to cheap shots and more violence during play.

Example: There is a lot less fights in the KHL because of their rules but when they happen they are pretty ugly and involve whole teams and dirty stuff.

There's also a trolling nature in the sport with great occasions to get under a persons skin.
I've personally enjoyed this privilege as a player and coach.

I used to put my weight on my stick on top of this opposite players stick in-front of my goalie to prevent him from catching passes. He started having a tantrum and slashed and dropped his stick and other bunch of nonsensical crap. He eventually got a penalty, I skated up to him to say thanks for the freebie.

Go in corner for the puck. Guy comes to lay a dirty hit in your back. Move away from the puck at the last second. He will collide with the boards and fall on his knees with the puck between his legs. "Play the puck" make sure by "coincidence" you put all of your weight into his head on the boards. He gets the penalty (attempt to injure). He starts complaining to the ref about you. Then tell him it's not your fault he plays like a vagina.

To sum it up. controlled violence is much better then uncontrolled violence and sometimes it prevents uncontrolled violence from happening. Good players are good because they care. People who care get emotional about it. People become volatile and stuff happens. Horrific injuries mostly happen in uncontrolled moments of violence. Except in Rugby and American Football.

Massive job loss will take place, but if left allowed to, the market will adapt. I just don't want my job to be taken away from me, tbh.

Was a big fuss in the Netherlands a while back when a referee was kicked to death in an amatuer football match. Stirred shit i nthe entire country. With us, it's just soccer though. Only waterpolo and handball are the rougher sport and field hockey is basically only agression from the public, the players actually never give a shit.

Anyway, go solosports if you want a nice attitude.
Probably one of the very few old-timers here who hasn't been a regimental leader.

Should I pull up that little video of that Italian bugger being headbutted by the glory of Zidaine?

This thread is going to devolve into sports-porn isn't it. Sooner or later someone's going to bring up some hooligan riots.

The only reason people are so emotionally attached to sports is cause of mirror neurons

Frankly I don't understand having pride in sports teams. I can kinda understand admiring an overpaid monkey kicking or hitting a ball around but pride is just beyond me
