LedZepp1109:
This is no place for humor, Russian history is serious business.

A few weeks ago I care across an interesting article about Peter the Great's mental health. It basically tried to explain his nearly neurotic scholasticism and desire to reorganize everything around him, and also his anxiety towards anything remotely Muscovite, Byzantine, or Orthodox. It contrasts his reign with Ivan the Terrible's, and claims that because Peter was older when he witnessed his first traumatic events (the 1682 massacre), he was able to cope with them better, whereas the young Ivan was turned into a paranoid sadist. It's not afraid to take a look at Peter's ugly little episodes though, like how he dealt with the streltsy rebels after their 1698 coup failed. The subject of psycho-history is obviously a little shaky, since you're trying to get inside the head of a dead patient, but it's a really interesting read.

Peter the great is quite well known here in the Netherlands. There's even a house somewhere by a harbour, now a museum, which is named the Tsar's cabin - Peter stayed there on his visits to Holland, and drank strong, stróóóng alcoholic drinks with Russian sailors there.  ::)
