History

The Battle of Cape St. Vincent After the signing of the Treaty of San Ildefonso in 1796 allying Spanish and French forces against Great Britain, the British navy blockaded Spain. In the meantime, the British Mediterranean Fleet, under Admiral Sir John Jervis, had sailed from the Tagus with 10 ships of the line to try to intercept the Spanish fleet. Heavy Fog concealed the British Fleet as well as the strength of the Spanish Fleet. Unaware of the size of his opponent's fleet, Jervis' squadron immediately sailed to intercept. Meanwhile, the unaware Spanish continued toward Cádiz. Early on the 14th, as dawn broke, Jervis's ships were in position and prepared to engage the Spanish. On the quarter-deck of Victory, Jervis, Captain Robert Calder and Captain Benjamin Hallowell counted the ships. It was at this point Jervis discovered that he was outnumbered nearly two-to-one. Seeing that it would be difficult to disengage, Jervis decided to continue because the situation would only get worse if the Spanish fleet managed to join up with the French. To the British advantage, the Spanish fleet was formed into two groups and was unprepared for battle, while the British were already in line. Jervis ordered the British fleet to pass between the two groups, minimizing the fire they could put into him, while letting him fire in both directions. To the rear the  San José and the San Nicolás had lost their main sails, leaving them dead in the water. The 11th boarded these vessels with ease and forced the Spanish aboard to surrender, successfully capturing them. Jervis resumed his blockade of the Spanish fleet in Cadiz for most of the following three years, largely curtailed the operations of the Spanish fleet until the Treaty of Amiens in 1802.

The Battle of Salamanca The Battle of Salamanca took place on 22 July, 1812 during the Peninsular War. An Anglo-Portuguese army under the command of the Duke of Wellington defeated Marshal Auguste Marmont's French forces among the hills around Arapiles, south of Salamanca. By the day of the battle Wellington had decided to withdraw his army all the way back to Portugal, but observed that with the two armies marching parallel to each other the French became strung out and Marmont had made the tactical error of separating his left flank from the main body of his army. The Duke immediately ordered the major part of his army to attack the overextended French left wing. Following the cavalry charge of dragoons and horse guards, the infantry moved up to engage the French lines. The 11th was one of the regiments among the front line of attack and managed to break through the enemy lines, earning them their names: "The Bloody Eleventh." The battle established Wellington as an offensive general. It was said that he "defeated an army of 40,000 men in 40 minutes." The Battle of Salamanca was a damaging defeat for the French and while they regrouped, Anglo-Portuguese forces entered Madrid on 6 August. The Siege of Burgos ensued, then in the autumn the Anglo-Portuguese retreated to Portugal when renewed French concentrations threatened to trap them, although the French forces, which had been stripped of several experienced units to join the Russian campaign, were reluctant to go on the offensive. A failure by Spanish troops to guard a crucial escape route over the bridge at Alba de Tormes tainted the victory. This may have resulted from a misunderstanding between Spanish and British commanders. Subsequent pursuit failed to destroy or to capture the fleeing French.
