History
The 43rd Regiment of Foot gets its name after the regiment that was formed in 1741, under the name Thomas Fowke's Regiment of Foot. It was numbered 54th Foot until 1748 when it became the 43rd Regiment of Foot. After the American War of Independence, the 43rd became the 43rd "Monmouthshire" Regiment. They were send back to the West Indies to retake Martinique and St Lucia from the French. Later that year, after surviving for 3 months of being besieged, they were defeated.

In 1803, the 43rd, together with the 52nd and 95th, became the first Corps of Light Infantry. They'd later be re-titled as the 43rd "Monmouthshire" Light Infantry. In 1808, the 43rd played a large role in the liberation of Portugal, and later Spain.
