The 11th New York "Fire Zouaves" was a union zouave regiment founded by Col. Elmer Ellsworth, a personal friend of Lincoln, that gained great fame for being comprised almost entirely of New York Firemen. They fought bravely at Manassas, by taking back the 69th New York's colors and taking rearguard action against pursuing confederate regiments.
