Everyone seems to be either looking forward to join the army/navy of his nation, but for me that would probably the worst decision I could take. Honestly, I have no desire of being shot or risk my life for politicians' decisions.
By the way, my Grand-grand father joined World War 1 for Austria-Hungary among the Kaiser Jäger and fought the Russians . 4 years later he came back to his farm unharmed, whilst my granduncle lost a leg in Greece in 1940.
Well if we talk about ancestors, then I can say that my 2 grandfathers were from East Prussia both, 1 of them from Königsberg and thr other one on a big farm. My grandfather from Königsberg became a Pioneer in WW2 for the 1.Pionier-Bataillon stationed in Königsberg. He was 'fighting' on the eastern front in Russia. After Stalingrad, he came to the Rhineland and married my grandmother.
My other grandfather was just working on his farm. For the economy
As the russians and polish were falling in he had to work like a slave. But one night, he ran for his life into the forest. 3 days he was walking through Prussia untill he got to the next town.
Then he went to the sea and took a ship to Pommerania. From there, he came to the Rhineland aswell and met my other grandmother.
Those are true stories, my grandfathers told me.
