What did Grenadier Companies do on the battlefield?
« on: January 07, 2013, 06:54:42 pm »
Hello i'm trying to convince my regiment leaders to create a grenadier company to support the larger center company in NW since we have got the members for that. But they won't unless i explain in great detail what a grenadier company does on the battlefield and how it can help us.

So can anyone tell me what a Grenadier Company exactly do?  ???

Not much different than the other companies really, the differences generally were that they were taller, stronger and were a little braver. I suppose they'd be used to lead charges and do other jobs within the battalion.

They were in the back of a column formations, usually kept in reserve (if there was a reserve at all, anyway) and sometimes they were massed together as special 'Grenadier' battalions. Especially the French liked to do that, while the British preferred forming big light compagnies formations.

Biggest, strongest, Manliest men. Held the right flank of a regiment. Didn't throw grenades, but had funny-looking hats.

Well hats are dependant on country as well, shoulderwings and a differently coloured feather thing was the norm for the british flank companies.

Here is a picture I found for comparison
"A Boss in Heaven is the best excuse for a boss on earth, therefore If God did exist, he would have to be abolished." - Mikhail Bakunin
"Dispassionate, fair, equal"
Oh you wanted a serious response, why didn't you just say so.

Those are Grenadier and Chasseurs of the Guard.

Mind you, the 3eme Grenadiers (The Dutch regiment) had a bearskin without a plate, like Chasseurs,

They were also sporting white uniforms, which is a bit more of a give-away ;)

Well, obviously, but I was just talking about the bearskins.

Not to forget the 3e Grenadiers of the 1815 campaign had (in theory) the same uniform as the other Grenadier regiments. No more fancy white coats...shame.   :-\

This right here is why Napoleon lost Waterloo. He didn't have any fancy white uniforms.
