About Us

The 1er Régiment de Chasseurs-à-Pied de la Garde Impériale is a experienced French Light Infantry regiment, my goal for this regiment is to create a large authentic Regiment. This means that we will be using formations and fighting styles like they did back in the Napoleonic era.

History

The Old Guard (French Vieille Garde) were an elite veteran elements of the Emperor Napoleon's Imperial Guard. As such it was the most prestigious formation in Napoleon's Grande Armée. French soldiers often referred to Napoleon's Imperial Guard as "the Immortals". The Old Guard was formed of veteran soldiers who had served Napoleon since his earliest campaigns. It is believed that Napoleon hand-selected members of his Old Guard based on physical traits, most notably above-average height. Their imposing stature was likely impressive to foes and allies alike.

Serving in the army for several years as well as a citation for bravery were also taken into consideration when selecting troops into the Old Guard. The Chasseurs of the Guard were the second most senior troops in the Grand Armée. Men in the Chasseurs of the Guard were equally brave and loyal as the Grenadiers of the Guard. Very often, they fought just as well.

From 1800 to 1814 the regiment fought in most of Napoleons most famous conflicts from Austerlitz to Eylau, Wagram to Smolensk and finally Paris before the exile of their Emperor. During the restoration, they were renamed and assigned as the Royal Guard of Louis XVIII whereas some served in the 'Elba Battalion' when Napoleon was exiled to Elba, until 20 March 1815 when Napoleon once again returned to France and reunited the regiment once again. The Chasseurs fought bravely and suffered many losses at the final and famous Battle of Waterloo when the Old Guard were sent forward by Napoleon as a last effort to push back his enemies who banded together to put an end to his rule.

During the Napoleonic Wars, the regiment fought in 18 battles across Europe earning a grand total of 15 battle honors.
