Grimsby Chums
History
Pals battalion raised in the Lincolnshire town of Grimsby. The headmaster of the grammar school raised the 250 strong company of former pupils of his school and eventually formed an enitre battalion. They were sent in the first wave of the Somme and attacked La Boisselle just south of Albert-Bapaume road. A mine called the Lochnagar mine was detonated to aid their charge.
The only people to make it to the German trenches were 2nd Lieutenant Harold P and five men all the way to the German reserve trench. They held off counter attacks and eventually had to retreat.
