Historical Reenactment / Let's discuss: Reenacting!
« on: March 22, 2014, 04:19:59 pm »
Since Davout got butthurt, I'm opening up this thread for us reenactors. Enjoy!

I got my low boots the other day, and they are super sexy. I'll post some pictures later. I definitely recommend going to Jan Berger for your boots for WWII Reenacting. He's a great guy, does great work. Well worth the big money.

Iron Europe / Suggested faction unit rosters list (My ideas)!
« on: February 27, 2014, 04:46:56 am »
What it is.

I'm bored with the current selection of units for the mod, and I know this was due to time-constraint, but for the future, I am making a huge list of troops that should be added for various factions. If I made a mistake in names, wording, troop types, etc. please let me know and I'll fix it.

Thanks.

British Commonwealth/Empire
Note: The British reformed their structure in 1881, so regiments such as the 92nd Gordon Highlanders or the 28th North Gloucestershire were all renamed (and in some cases, merged with other regiments) The following link will provide you with a list that could be very handy if you are looking to create a british regiment. Once again, as you can see, the 92nd Gordon Highlanders and the 75th merged and formed "The Gordon Highlanders". You can find the British regiment list here.

Erzherzog Eugen von Österreich, the man who started it all.
The cross of the Teutonic Knights dated back to the time of the first crusades. In 1190 AD, the Deutsche Ritterorden (German Knightly Order) was founded. The knights were trained as medical as well as religious warriors. Their valorous deeds and excellent training were very important in the campaigns of colonization and christianization of the lands east of Prussia. However, after Hochmeister Albrecht von Brandenberg left the Catholic faith during the Protestant reformation, the knightly orders decayed and virtually disappeared. A new order designated the Hoch-und Teutschmeister was founded in circa 1530. Shortly thereafter the first wars with the arch enemy of Christian Europe, Turkey, began. Despite the religion-based wars raging, the German knightly orders were unable to rebuild and take a significant role in the defense of what is now Austria, Czech Republic, Germany and Poland. The time of the knightly orders had ended.

In 1696 Franz-Ludwig, Count Palatine of the Rhein, Duke of Neuberg, authorized the Hoch- und Teutschmeister regiment which was to be composed of three battalions of foot each of which would have four companies. This is considered to be the formal birth of the present Hoch- und Deutschmeister - possibly the proudest name in Imperial Austria's military history.

The regiment was commanded by Austro-Hungarian Prince Eugen von Österreich against the Turks in the great battle of Zenta which broke Turkish power in Europe for a time. The HuD took a prominent role in the victory which may well be considered its true baptism of fire. The regiment is next mentioned for its role in the storming of Belgrade in 1717 and the attack on Kolin in the Seven Years War in 1757.

In 1769 the Austrian military establishment began to number regiments. The HuD was granted the Number 4. Under Emperor Josef II the regiment was named the home regiment for Vienna and recruitment was concentrated there. The people of Vienna referred to the Regiment as the "Wiener Edelknaben" which literally translates to "Vienna Pages." The sons of the best families of Vienna sought positions in the Regiment as a means of further establishing themselves in Viennese society. Members of the regiment included Archdukes from all over Austria as well as Imperial princes.

In the last Turkish war, the Hoch-und Deutschmeister helped conquer Belgrade in 1788 and Cetin in 1790. In the wars with Napoleonic France that followed, the Hoch- und Deutschmeister was in more than 90 battles in 25 years. In the Wars of Liberation in the early 19th century the HuD fought Napoleon at San Michele (1813), Mincio (1814), Valeggio (1814) and finally marched its banner triumphantly through the streets of Napoleon’s capital, Paris, in 1815.

In 1849 the HuD was instrumental in crushing the Hungarian revolt against Hapsburg rule. It was commanded by the revered General Radetzky, for whom the famous Radetzky March is still played in Vienna. In the war between Austria and Prussia in the mid-19th century the regiment fought at Koeniggsgraetz and met defeat, thus reducing Austrian influence on the affairs of what is now Germany and Poland. In the 65 years between the Prussian War and the outbreak of the First World War, the HuD enjoyed a productive peace at home in Vienna. The unit’s renowned band wrote its two famous marches: "Hoch- und Deutschmeister Marsche" and "Deutschmeister Marsche" and the regimental band became known throughout the world as it toured the globe. As a part of the 1904 St. Louis Exposition the band was invited to perform and then conduct a tour of the United States. The tour was a resounding success and the regiment's bandmasters, Colonels Ziehrer and Wacek were widely regarded as being among the finest bandmasters in the world.

The First World War saw the Hoch- und Deutschmeister heavily employed on the Eastern Front against the Russians. The result was enormous losses to the regiment’s rolls. In their very first skirmish 27 June 1915, the Regimental Commander, Oberst Freiherr von Holzhausen was slain. On 7 July, the Russians launched a staggering offensive which fell very heavily on the HuD resulting in the loss of over half of the regiment’s officers and men. The date of 07/07 is to this day the regimental memorial day.

After Russia left the war in 1918 with the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, the HuD was rebuilt and transferred to the Italian front where it ended the war on the Piave. When the war ended, numerous communiqués and citations noted that the Hoch- und Deutschmeister had discharged all its duties with great devotion and honor. With the end of the war came the end of the Hapsburgs. The Austrian Empire was the divided into the various countries that, for the most part, make up the map today. The new Austrian government ordered that the HuD regiment be absorbed into the Austrian Army known as the Volkswehr where it lost most of its status as an Imperial regiment of honor. With the Aunschluss with Nazi Germany in 1938, the 4th Regiment Hoch-und Deutschmeister was integrated into the newly formed Deutsche Wehrmacht as the 134th Regiment of the 44th Infantry Division.

« on: November 23, 2013, 06:45:17 pm »

Hallo,

We are the Kaiser's Royal Riflemen. We are an international clan for Verdun with goals of becoming a large clan that can participate in clan events. We are a casual clan, no ranks, no politics, just absolute fun and the enjoyment of Verdun. We are based in the United States...

We will mainly play as German Infantry (Landers and AlpenJaegers), and may switch to Austria-Hungary upon their release. Currently, our roster for our clan includes: [22] Members found on our Steam group page...

---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---
We now have a requirements list to join, it's small but gets the point across:
1. Must be 16+ years of age for full clan membership, younger aspiring players will go through a trial membership.
2. We are recruiting worldwide now, for a variety of reason, but we expect all members to be able to communicate in English, at least on a moderate-advanced level.
3. Must be willing to wear clan tags in-game (i.e. KRR-Name).
---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---   ---

We may plan on using German last names in the future, so our current names aren't final. We encourage all prospective members to become acquainted with the German weapons (Gewehr 98 and the Karabiner 98AZ). When playing Frontline Assault, we ask that members start squads of Landsers or AlpenJaegers with the name "Kaiser's Royal Riflemen" or "Kaiser's Royal Rifles," the decision is theirs, both names are ours.

Thank you for taking the time read over our small thread, which will be updated often. And always remember, GOTT MIT UNS!

Add Petschie on Steam for more details. We are now on Steam!

     History of the Roman Marines
In 56 BC, for the first time a Roman fleet engaged in battle outside the Mediterranean. This occurred during Julius Caesar's Gallic Wars, when the maritime tribe of the Veneti rebelled against Rome. Against the Veneti, the Romans were at a disadvantage, since they did not know the coast, and were inexperienced in fighting in the open sea with its tides and currents. Furthermore, the Veneti ships were superior to the light Roman galleys. They were built of oak and had no oars, being thus more resistant to ramming. In addition, their greater height gave them an advantage in both missile exchanges and boarding actions. In the event, when the two fleets encountered each other in Quiberon Bay, Caesar's navy, under the command of D. Brutus, resorted to the use of hooks on long poles, which cut the halyards supporting the Veneti sails. Immobile, the Veneti ships were easy prey for the legionaries who boarded them, and fleeing Veneti ships were taken when they became becalmed by a sudden lack of winds. Having thus established his control of the English Channel, in the next years Caesar used this newly-built fleet to carry out two invasions of Britain. The last major campaigns of the Roman navy in the Mediterranean until the late 3rd century AD would be in the civil wars that ended the Republic. In the East, the Republican faction quickly established its control, and Rhodes, the last independent maritime power in the Aegean, was subdued by Gaius Cassius Longinus in 43 BC, after its fleet was defeated off Kos. In the West, against the triumvirs stood Sextus Pompeius, who had been given command of the Italian fleet by the Senate in 43 BC. He took control of Sicily and made it his base, blockading Italy and stopping the politically crucial supply of grain from Africa to Rome. After suffering a defeat from Sextus in 42 BC, Octavian initiated massive naval armaments, aided by his closest associate, Marcus Agrippa: ships were built at Ravenna and Ostia, the new artificial harbor of Portus Julius built at Cumae, and soldiers and rowers levied, including over twenty-thousand manumitted slaves. Finally, Octavian and Agrippa defeated Sextus in the Battle of Naulochus in 36 BC, putting an end to all Pompeian resistance.Octavian's power was further enhanced after his victory against the combined fleets of Mark Antony and Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, in the Battle of Actium in 31 BC, where Antony had assembled five-hundred ships against Octavian's four-hundred ships. This last naval battle of the Roman Republic definitively established Octavian as the sole ruler over Rome and the Mediterranean world. In the aftermath of his victory, he formalized the Fleet's structure, establishing several key harbors in the Mediterranean. The now fully professional navy had its main duties consist of protecting against piracy, escorting troops and patrolling the river frontiers of Europe. It remained however engaged in active warfare in the periphery of the Empire.
Our Goals in Classiarivs
Our goal in the Cohors Classiarvs is simple. Strive for a large, fun, and historically correct experience in the Bello Civili mod for Napoleonic Wars. We welcome all North American players into our group, and will soon begin attending events. We're looking to keep this casual, and we understand that your life comes before games. Work and school is first and foremost. So, we're going to strive for weekend events and public play. That way, people can focus on the things that need to be done at home, and for people to have their during-the-week Napoleonic Wars events. We want to keep this fun, always remember that!

So, I come here to this community to see if I can do a trade? I am asking for a $40 or less game(s) on Steam of my choosing (I promise I will ask for no more), for my extra key of Battlefield 3 on Origin.

If there are any takers, please send me a PM, and from there we will share Steam ID's and work it out.

Thanks guys,

Other Games / "Empire: Total War" Mods: What do you recommend?
« on: August 09, 2013, 05:53:25 am »
Howdy.

I'm an avid fan of the 17th, 18th, and 19th century history, especially when it comes to the many wars and conflicts of those 300 years. So, I come here to you, the FSE community, to help me find a mod that I will enjoy, and/or enjoy playing with others. When it comes to Empire: Total War, I absolutely love the mods where they emphasize the campaign. Empire (I'll stick with that) has my favorite campaign out of any Total War, second to the Medieval II: Total War campaigns. So, here's where we get down to business...

I have tried so many Empire mods, you'd shit yourself if you knew. Some of the mods I tried are:

European Wars II, DarthMod: Ultimate Commander (Hated it), Empires of Destiny, Empire Enhanced, Empire Realism, The Blue and the Grey (American Civil War), the Goutlard mini-mods (changes battle behavior, unit spacing, etc.), and various other mini-mods and overhauls.

Basically, I'm looking for a good realism mod, that isn't afraid to make the game very difficult. I'm looking for emphasis on the campaign. The mod needs to be set between 1600 and 1800. And, definitely larger unit sizes (I hate the small sizes of units in the Total Wars from Empire and later).

If there are mods that you play, that you would recommend, I will absolutely try it, even if it's a mod I have played previosuly. Who knows? Maybe I'll actually pick it up and enjoy it, even though I haven't before. Also, if there are mods with good focus on multiplayer, and have a decent sized community, I'll try those too!

Thanks, and I hope to hear from you guys soon.

Petschie.

We're a North American regiment, based in the Iron Europe mod (This is our NW counterpart), striving to provide a realistic and educational background to Napoleonic Wars and its mods. We focus on the company level, and will operate as such. We use authentic German/Austrian commands, speak in German where possible, use period-correct names, and generally try to portray our desired unit as best as we can. Call it, hmmm... virtual reenacting? We're looking for like-minded individuals, who are mature (no age requirement), that can be active to attend events and trainings, willing to better themselves, learn discipline, and create a good an educational atmosphere for new recruits into the unit. We want to portray the regiment to our best ability, but have as much fun as possible.

the Second World War, the regiment was changed numerically and was attached to the Zweite Reichs-Grenadier-Division (2nd Imperial Grenadiers) as Infanterie-
Regiment, Nummer 134. It participated in the Nazi take over of France in 1940. In 1941-1942, the regiment was moved to the Eastern Front to assist the 6th
Front Army in Operation Barbarossa. During the Siege of Stalingard, over four hundred men in the regiment were killed or captured by the Russians. After the
war, less than thirteen percent of the regiment had survived. The regiment was reconstituted into the Austrian Guard and was renamed "Infanterie Regiment
(Hoch und Deutschmeister)." To this day, the regiment remains an elite unit in Austria. Its band is known as one of the top military bands in the world.

(August 23, 1942 - February 2, 1943)

The Battle of Stalingrad is considered by many historians to have been the turning point in World War Two in Europe. The battle at Stalingrad bled the German army dry in Russia and after this defeat, the Germany Army was in full retreat. One of the ironies of the war, is that the German Sixth Army need not have got entangled in Stalingrad. Army Groups A and B were well on their way to the Caucasus in south-west Russia, when Hitler ordered an attack on Stalingrad. From a strategic point of view it would have been unwise to have left a major city unconquered in your rear as you advanced. However, some historians believe that Hitler ordered the taking of Stalingrad simply because of the name of the city and Hitler's hatred of Joseph Stalin. For the same reason Stalin ordered that the city had to be saved. The Battle for Stalingrad was fought during the winter of 1942 to 1943. In September 1942, the German commander of the Sixth Army, General Paulus, assisted by the Fourth Panzer Army, advanced on the city of Stalingrad. His primary task was to secure the oil fields in the Caucasus and to do this, Paulus was ordered by Hitler to take Stalingrad. The Germans final target was to have been Baku. Stalingrad was also an important target as it was Russia’s centre of communications in the south as well as being a center for manufacturing. In early September 1942, the German Army advanced to the city. The Russians, already devastated by the power of Blitzkrieg during Operation Barbarossa, had to make a stand especially as the city was named after the Russian leader, Joseph Stalin. For simple reasons of morale, the Russians could not let this city fall. Likewise, the Russians could not let the Germans get hold of the oil fields in the Caucasus. Stalin’s order was "Not a step backwards". The battle for the city descended into one of the most brutal in World War Two. Individual streets were fought over using hand-to-hand combat. The Germans took a great deal of the city but they failed to fully assert their authority. Areas captured by the Germans during the day, were re-taken by the Russians at night. On November 19th, the Russians were in a position whereby they could launch a counter-offensive. Marshal Zhukov used six armies of one million men to surround the city. The 5th tank regiment led by Romanenko attacked from the north as did the 21st Army (led by Chistyakov), the 65th Army (led by Chuikov) and the 24th Army (led by Galinin). The 64th, 57th and 521st armies attacked from the south. The attacking armies met up on November 23rd at Kalach with Stalingrad to the east. The bulk of the Sixth Army – some 250,000 to 300,000 men - was in the city and Zhukov, having used his resources to go around the city, north and south, had trapped the Germans in Stalingrad. Paulus could have broken out of this trap in the first stages of Zhukov’s attack but was forbidden from doing so by Hitler. Unable to break out, the Germans also had to face the winter. Temperatures dropped to well below zero and food, ammunition and heat were in short supply. Hitler ordered that Paulus should fight to the last bullet, and to encourage Paulus, he promoted him to field marshal. However, by the end of January 1943, the Germans could do nothing else but surrender. Paulus surrendered the army in the southern sector on January 31st while General Schreck surrendered the northern group on February 2nd, 1943.

So, why was this battle so important?
The failure of the German Army was nothing short of a disaster. A complete army group was lost at Stalingrad and 91,000 Germans were taken prisoner. With such a massive loss of manpower and equipment, the Germans simply did not have enough manpower to cope with the Russian advance to Germany when it came. Despite resistance in parts – such as a Kursk – they were in retreat on the Eastern Front from February 1943 on. In his fury, Hitler ordered a day’s national mourning in Germany, not for the men lost at the battle, but for the shame von Paulus had brought on the Wehrmacht and Germany. Paulus was also stripped of his rank to emphasize Hitler’s anger with him.

Vasiliy Zaytsev, Russian hero of the Battle of Stalingrad. It is said that during this battle alone, Vasily had 250+ confirmed kills. Some say it was near 500. Vasiliy is also credited for the killings of 11 German snipers, including the real Major Erwin König, who was a teacher at the Berlin Sniper Academy. He died in 1991, and is memorialized to this day as the greatest soldier in Russian history, and as a hero.
