Two Majors in the family, one may soon be a Lt. Colonel.

Maybe I could get in via connections, but chances are I could only afford to be in the cavalry were I an enlisted man.

So Light infantry is a possibility, I'd deliberately avoid being in a line regiment, not that my chances of survival would be very good in any case.
Crawling back to you,
Ever thought of calling when you've had a few? 'cause I always do.

If I might comment, you managed to get that education. In early 19th century, there was simple no way you would have gone to VWO level, had you been a simple peasant.

Being a nobleman meant little in the 1795-1813 period, you would not receive a special treatment just because you were from old nobility...unless you were rich, ofcourse.

In 1813, any Dutch nobleman shouting 'oranje boven' would receive a commision...and I'm not even kidding.

And guys, please remember that musket-armed light infantry would fight in line just as much as their mates in the line.  ::)

And forgive me for spoiling all the fun. I blame it on my Dutchness.

I have though of that, though, with the nobility in mind, and considering tey were probably higher mid-class...Debatable

Organize (,dress) and arm 50 men and you'll be a lieutenant. Make it 500 and you'll be a lieutenant-colonel. Don't look surprised when you are kicked out of the army a year later to be replaced by a REAL soldier.

Being an officer ain't all that jolly, either. Lots of paperwork and responsibility. The higher pay grade and privileges don't necessarily count up to that.

Paperwork, paperwork, paperwork, drink booze, paperwork, drink booze during paperwork, show up at some ball\social occasion to drink more booze and chase skirt\let the skirt chase you, or alternatively complain you had month's paperwork unfinished and you were dragged there, paperwork, more paperwork, drink booze, enjoy dysentery, get yelled the incompetent courier lost your message by your superior officer, more paperwork, realise the unit is in shoddy state, report, more reports and paperwork and booze, get yelled because your men showed up drunk, more paperwork, supervise the punishments tec, lose other your leg from knee and below thanks to a cannonball - or alternatively too many balls from muskets, enjoy field surgery, and if you survive enjoy more paperwork in non-combat duties, or get discharged.

Where can I sign up?  :P

It's a Cossack of the 6th cavalry regiment of the Chernigov opolchenie. The Opolchenie were pretty well the definition of irregulars.

By those standards pretty much half the NL army was irregular.

Sure, they were armed, dressed and trained, but they were called 'militia'.

There was only one regular Cossack unit-the Life Guard Cossack Regiment.
