Title: What would you have been?
Post by: KillerMongoose on January 06, 2013, 08:56:20 am
Based on your own physical ability and mentality and other factors, what kind of unit from the Napoleonic Wars would you have been? Would you be a dashing Hussar? A massive, powerful grenadier? A wily light infantryman? Or maybe a calculating artillerist?

Personally given my physical stature, thin but rather tall height and long reach, I'd most definitely be a light cavalryman, but I couldn't see myself as a hussar (though it's a dashing way to imagine myself) I'm just not naturally as cocky and wreckless as a hussar might be. I do like to take risks but I at least assess them before diving into them. There is a difference between taking calculated risks and wrecklessness. I think I would fit more as a lancer or something like a chasseur a cheval. Who knows, maybe I could have been a hussar, maybe the cockiness comes with the title heh. Were I more heavily muscled I could no doubt pass for a grenadier or a heavy cavalryman given my height.

I'm already tall enough to be a grenadier of the line... Dutch - Tallest people in the world. FTW.

But as I ride, I'd defiantly join up with the cavalry. Hussars would probably fit me - I'm not the bravest person ever, and much like KillerMongoose I think about taking risks... but whenever I'm in 'Screw all this'-mood...I really don't give a shit about anything anymore.  ::) Plus, I like scouting.

So, taking all this in consideration, my Napoleonic career would consist of:
- 2nd or 3rd Dutch Hussar regiment, Kingdom of Holland.
- 11e Hussards (From the 2nd regiment), service in Russia and then probably deserting somewhere in 1814, or the Red Lancers. Two squadrons of the 3rd regiment fought in Spain and they were lifted to Guard status just before the Dutch army became part of the French one. They became Red Lancers.
- IF I had survived all this, I'd sign up in the 6th Regiment of Hussars (or the 4th Regiment of Light dragoons) and do my duty for the new United Kingdom of the Netherlands. Or they might come for me. Conscription is a bitch.

I like to think I've made an officer, but well...Realistically, I think I might have hit corporal, maybe sergeant.

I'm pretty small. I am a bit fat. I am not quite up to scratch on brain power, even though I am quite methodical. I would be a Regimental Quarter Master. Or if fate had been good. A Wagon Master General.

a quartermaster would still be an officer (A lieutenant, I believe).

Judging by my brothers size and my ow size, I would probably be either a grenadier, as both my brothers are around 6'2", 200 pounds around there. If I turn out shorter, line infantry for sure. We are middle class, and I am in all honor classes, so if I was to do it right at the time, I may have even became an officer.

Because I'm not the front pig, rather I am an academic (without saying that snooty) and familar with (military-)history, warfare and maps. And being more of a tactican, diplomat & gentleman with some horse riding skills, I would say I can fill out the role of a general (I would not say as leader over all, because I don't have actually the experience of a military genius), maybe as brigadier or major general.
Maybe due to some mathematic experience & skills, I am usefull as artillery officer, too.

I could say the same about me. Except from maths...Brrr...maths...
Thing is, I probably wouldn't have all that knowledge if I hadn't lived in this time. If I had lived in the time, I simply would have never managed to reach any academy as my family is low-mid class from north NL.

Well, my family was in this time well setted merchants (north germany) or land owners (south germany). With my actual ressources transferred in this time more likely not (because my family lost much stuff during WW1 & 2 and in the economic crisis 1929/30)! :P
But with the ressources my family in this time had, theoretical it would have been possible for me to reach officer ranks.

Staff Officer, I'd reckon I'd be quite decent at working as a staff officer, nor are there any that specific requirments for that. I suppose the fact that my family would lack the connections a bit, so the staff might be off limits to me. In that case I would probably be an artillery officer.

From the little bit of practice I've done so far, I feel I'm pretty handy with a saber, and I've got some experience riding horses. The nation I'd be in service in is hard to say, most of my family is Belgian so I'd probably start off in Austrian service in the Austrian Netherlands, maybe something like Leloup's Chasseurs (depends on when I would be born really) then onto French service and eventually service in the United Kingdom of the Netherlands probably 5th Light Dragoons or 8th Hussars. However I also come from a prominent family in Westphalia so I could potentially have seen service in Prussia maybe as an Uhlan, Hussar, or Dragoon officer. France did control a vassal kingdom they called "Westphalia" but it truthfully only consisted of a small part of Westphalia, and was instead mainly made up of Hessian and Eastphalian regions. There is also the Native American in me which would mean that I take absolutely zero part in anything except maybe helping the Americans fight the War of 1812... maybe. And regarding my Belgian heritage, I have both Walloon blood and Flemish blood in me so there's a chance that I would have died during Boerenkrijg fighting the French occupation voor altaar en haard or maybe working with Charlepoeng as a brigand.

If the call to arms was given and young men were to enlist, I'd apply for the artillery. It's what I want to do in the Marine Corps. If I stayed in, I'd possibly go the officer route, my father already being an artillery officer and my mother well endowed from her lucrative parents.

Father's side comes from the Alsace-Lorraine region (before they moved to Canada before the French Revolution). I'm bad on my NW history, so I'm not sure if that was a part of France or the Confederation during the period. Also, strong ties to Scottish and English on my mom's side, so possibly that.
Title: Re: What would you have been?

So first off: Let's assume that I would be in Europe. Next, well assume I survive through the whole thing. Then, judging by mother and father's last names, I would have likely been an officer, and in the British army. An officer in a Highlander regiment, by mother's side. Or an Essex(?) regiment by my father's side. Since that would be the most likely, we'll go with that.

So I probably would have Joined the 44th (East Essex) Regiment of Foot, and fought through the campaigns they were a part of, in a grenadier company. (As I'm very tall and fairly strong)

We're I to be in the cavalry (Don't know, as I haven't had too much horse-riding experience), I would probably be a Dragoon. Light, though most likely heavy. Maybe even the Scots Greys. :D
Not a hussar though, as I can be daring and somewhat dashing (at least I like to think so ;) ), but I'm not as cocky, wreckless, and wild as they generally were.

I'm a tall and lanky guy. Saying this, I have experience in both combat sports and archery. I feel I would be a good marksmen, so I would probably join a skirmisher regiment. Judging my heritage, I am polish, German, and English. So, depending on where I would be born, I would either be a jäger(East Prussian, preferably), a rifleman(95th preferably), or some sort of French chasseur or voltiguer(I honestly have no idea about polish troops, correct me if I am wrong)

Or, with my body type, a light cavalry man.

Edit: If it makes a difference, my family is in the high class. Possibly opens up officer positions?

Poland had no light infantry regiments, except some Lithuanian regiment they made late in the war.

I find it quite entertaining almost everybody would like to become cavalry - just like then.

Depending on nationality well,

As Irish, i'd probably be one of Wolfe Tones revolutionaries aided by the French Republic against the British, as a simple soldier.
As Dutch, I'd be part of the Patriotten, Dutch Republicans aided by the French Republic against the Dutch Monarchy, again as a simple soldier  ;D.

Later on during Napoleons reign, i hoped i would atleast get Grenadier.

While I like to think I'd have made a dashing cavalryman... I'd more likely be an artilleryman if I had voluntarily joined the military (because I'm sort of a nerd :P) or otherwise, maybe a lowly footsoldier (militia) going off to die for his country.

I am good at calculating stuff and a smart guy = Artillery Captain

I am tall = Grenadier

I LOVE scouting and fancy uniforms = Hussar

So my career.

Grenadier Company of Smolensk Line infantry - out of service in 1807
Artillery Captain of 5y Artillery - After Leipzig I retired from service due to issues in the homeland.
Isum Hussars Sergeant - Till the end of the war

Middle class, access to horses and 5'8" with a thin frame.

God, I hope Hussar, Light Dragoon is more likely. Rifleman or Light Infantry is possible but I've never shot properly in my life so I can hardly comment on my accuracy.

Chances are I wouldn't be an officer, look up the prices of commissions sometimes, then consider that the value of the pound has changed tremendously. Ridiculous. Although I could possibly have gotten in as a cornet.

Despite the fact that I'm of the physical build to be a grenadier, my commanding officers would quickly find that my independence is more suited to light infantry work.

So, either an NCO in a light company/rifle regiment... or flogged to death for insubordination..

If we take into account, however, what funds my family had at this point in time, I would likely end up as a subaltern for one of the rifle regiments.

My family on my dad's side comes from Pry, Belgium and my mother's side comes from Ghent, Belgium in Flanders so I would likely have served in the Austrian Netherlands, perhaps under Captain Leloup's Jagers or in a similar light infantry or light cavalry regiment. But then later on I would more than likely have seen action in the French military, perhaps the 12th light, 112th Line or the 16th or 27th Chasseurs a Cheval. And were I lucky enough to survive long enough, I would go on to the Battle of Waterloo probably in either in a line battalion like the 7de or a jager battalion such as the 35ste. If not then I'd probably be in a light cavalry regiment like the 5de Light Dragoons or the 8ste Hussars

As if June 1808, in Jaeger regiments only NCOs and twelve chosen men from each company, for a max total of 144 per regiment, had rifles. The rest of the men had smooth-bore muskets. After the 1811 reorganization of battalions though, the Jaegers now had a "heavy company" in every battalion, and this company was broken into a light and heavy platoon, just like the regular infantry. The equivalent of grenadiers were called "carabiniers", while the equivalent of the light infantry were called "strelki" (from the singular strelok) or "vzvod strelkov or "strelkovyy vzvod" and this platoon would be comprised of all the chosen men from the other companies and thus have all the rifles.

In the regular infantry regiments, the light platoon never had rifles at all.

Since my decent is from Lithuania I could make it out as a 3eme Lancer for the French or a Lithuanian Lancer for the Russians.  I've never rode a horse, though, and I don't feel a pole weapon is my type of thing...

Since I'm skinny and have a lot of stamina I think I'd best be fight as a light infantryman or Jager.

Dutch - Tallest people in the world.

Duuring, just stop. Dutch are in no way the tallest people in the world. Don't be cocky now.

Anywho, quite honestly, I would more than likely be made as a grenadier no matter the army I am put into. I'm very tall, 6'5". Sorta fat, this'll change though. I'm incredibly stong, and I have a most fearsome aura about me. One that could strike fear into my enemy. I'd love to stab a few people with Bayonet's. Give them cold steel to their gut, lift them up, pound them to the ground, and curbstomp or bash their head in. Hmmm... Duuring would be one! For thinking the Dutch, who are mutated Germans, as being the tallest people in the world. :D I'd also like to bayonet charge BETTY_THE_BOMBER into a spike wall as well. Just to teach that lousy tea-drinker to piss off. Well, he'll be dead.

I wish I would be of stature to be a Hussar, however my equestrian skills are terrible. I find Hussars to be so arrogant and cocky, much like myself. I have great sword skills, but again, horseback? No. I don't think I'd be able to hit anything with a sword on horseback.

Being second generation canadian-Dutch...

I would have been a not so well off, but well read young dutchman who would most likely have joined up with the revolutionary forces in france.

Due to my height I would have ended up a grenadier, and who knows with my wits and knowledge I could possible become an officer in time for the napoleonic wars. fight at Austerlitz, Eylau, and experience the horror of the retreat from moscow... maybe even fight in the hundred days campaign...

It's worthy to note that average height is around 5"9, that means that most of us would have been line, because it was harder to make the grenadiers and average height has decreased. I know that French grenadiers were veterans later on, meaning you needed service.

I believe a grenadier had to be around 6'0", had to be a certain weight too. Obviously had to be capable with a musket at ranged, and in melee. It really depends on the nation. I can't speak too much for it, all that I know is that one look at me from an army officer back then, they'd immediately make me a grenadier because of how big I am.

After doing some quick research, according to 2 sources, pre-1806 Prussian Army Reforms, Grenadiers were actually volunteers. However, those who were fitted to be a grenadier were weeded out from the rest. A grenadier had to be 6'1" and had to be at least 230 pounds. He had to have extreme skill and discipline. Post-1806 Prussian Army Reforms, the standard was actually lowered! However, by 1 inch (Grenadiers had to be 6'0") and had to weight 200 pounds. I'm sure this is because the Prussians were in a scramble to get armies up and running. However, even with the new Grenadiers standards, the picked grenadiers had to still show extreme skill and discipline. Also, grenadiers often formed the vanguard of an attack. They were the first to hit the enemy lines, and in case of a siege, were the first to charge through a breached wall.

I don't understand how high you have to be to be a grenadier. Can someone give me a short answer: Im 187 high, could I possibly be a grenadier or not?

I believe a French line grenadier was 176, a carabineer 174,5 and a grenadier of the guard 178. But, experience was often more reason for people to get in the elite companies or guard regiments.

Assuming I wouldn't die at the age of three from the flu or small pox, I'd probably be an artillerist in the Upper Canada militia, and sink some defensely American boats at Queenston Heights like a coward true Canadian hero, then at the Battle of York I'd probably die when the western battery's powder train exploded, and Americans would feast on my crispy flesh.

If it's Silesia, expect to be in the Freikorps and get slaughtered or the regular army where you flash bright yellow colors at the French. Most likely you would have been landwehr, notably that died in the Silesien IV corps at placonoit in a form of slaughter.

Being born in Surrey and moving to Lincolnshire at 7 I would probably be in a Lincoln regiment, If the same were to happen 200 years ago. I am of Irish decent (3/4) so that could affect something. I am tall and weedy but pretty smart (how do I say that whilst retaining my modesty?), and if it means anything I have a cousin who is Lieutenant-General in the Canadian army. My family is fairly well-off as we can afford to buy most things without too much financial struggle. If I add all of this stuff up I would be an NCO in some kind of skirmisher battalion or an officer in a line regiment. Perhaps of the 2nd Yorkshire west riding light inf (as Yorkshire borders Lincolnshire) or the 10th (North Lincoln) Regiment of Foot respectively.

Hmmm, about me, I'm not sure:

I'm tall (Dutchie, eh), well built, in very good condition. I'm smart, straight to it, and very stubborn.
Mathematics isn't a problem at all. My family was back in the days, higher mid class, though my ancesters are nobles, I don't know what the name still meant in the 1800's.

Tactician, that would be, perhaps an officer of artillery or line, but a higher officer maight aswell be very well possible.

though, again, I'm not sure

Title: Re: What would you have been?

People were shorter only by a very small margin. The average European in the Napoleonic era was around 170 cm tall, which is slightly shorter than the modern average. Still, you officially had to be 178 cm tall to become a grenadier in the French army, which renders the majority of modern Europeans ineligible. The exact average height changed from region to region, naturally. The Russians tended to be quite tall, for example, whereas the Dutch were well below 170 cm on average.

There's a very common misconception that people have gotten progressively bigger throughout history, but it's not at all true. The height of a people depends largely on how well fed they are---the average height in the Roman empire was about the same as now during the glory years but much shorter during the rougher patches, for example. A modern example would be the significant difference between the average heights of North and South Koreans, the South being much better fed and thus several inches taller.

The Dutch were probably the shortest people in Europe back then, which explains why they were below average height in the 7de.

For reasons I don't fully appreciate, the Dutch started to grow significantly in the 20th century and are now among the tallest people.

Yes, we were the smallest in the 19th century, and we have been the tallest people of the world for a few years now. Not among, THE tallest.

I'm with my 177 cm doing quite well, I dare say. When I was in Rome I had more then one kid staring at me. Which might have something to do with my neck-lenght blond hair, as well.

According Wikipedia (I know, but the article is well sourced), the average height of a Dutch male is between 180 cm (a 2010 study) and 183 cm (a 2009 study) assuming the low estimate, there are several taller countries. Assuming the high estimate, people of the Dinarides are still taller with an average height of 185 cm.

Either way, at 188 cm tall I'm still well above the average in every country of Earth. So take that , the Dutch!

Well, you did have to be Dutch and survive the peninsular war for about 4 years.

Napoleon ordered every battalion in Spain to give one veteran for the new Old guard, in 1813. This included two batallions of the 130eme de ligne, which used to be 1st bat, 2de ligne and 2nd bat, 4de ligne, of the Dutch army They were incorporated into the French army, and seen as French, in 1810. And as they had been in Spain since 1809, they stayed there.

I found one of those two men in the Roll call of a militia batallion in the Waterloo campaign.

I would've been in some royal regiment in the Kingdom of Holland, than I would be a Dutch Grenadier in French service because I'm 1.89m tall.
They say the Dutch are the tallest people with 1.85m average, and especially the north of the Netherlands, were they are average 1.87m (I am living in the North of the Netherlands).
But now back on my life story:
If I survived Russia (chance 1%, would've probably frozen to death), I would've joined the 2de Grenadiers of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands and fight in the hunderd days campaign, and than I would've come back and get a family  ;)

While we are among the tallest people in the world NOW, we used to be the smallest.

Personal research from the roll call of the 7de (which are mostly from Flanders) had lead me to the conclusion those men were on the average 166 cm, with as small as 140 and as high as 185.
It also seems height was barely important for being part of a flank company, but I've to do a little more research for that.

If anyone wants basicly ANY informations on Dutch 1813-15 units...I think I'm your man. Come on, give my life a purpose!  ::)

I'd like to ask (and that's a serioud question), why do you think you'd have made officer, and not just a ranker?

In my case, I suppose I'd been smart enough to become a brigadier (corporal of cavalry), but if I'd have it in me to rise trough the ranks. And being middle-class, I don't really have the connection or money to raise the corrupt way.

Well, as for me (assuming you ask everyone that has said they would be an officer, and not just Agovich), I would (were I to be an officer) probably be so largely due to family connections (military officers in the family).

Technically so would I, but considering the price of commissions, how officers generally had income from their family and had to pay for all of their equipment. Probably stands that I wouldn't be one.

If I was, the best I'd hope to be if some sort of Napoleonic Flashman.

Officially only British officers could purchase their commision. (I think)

Unofficially family connections et cetera brought you a lot futher. Or raising your own regiment. If you get a small fortune lying around  :P

I would (were I to be an officer) probably be so largely due to family connections (military officers in the family).

Yeah, that basicly ensured a commision, even if you were a total idiot. Not saying you are, of course  :P

Let's make this a trend:

As for me:

I have a noble family background, going back to the middle ages. And because I am educated at Hollands highest standard (VWO, but I do try not to be elititistic about it, though that failes when I mention it like here  ;)) So, I think that would certainly help me getting a comission, but please do tell me if I'm wrong!

Two Majors in the family, one may soon be a Lt. Colonel.

Maybe I could get in via connections, but chances are I could only afford to be in the cavalry were I an enlisted man.

So Light infantry is a possibility, I'd deliberately avoid being in a line regiment, not that my chances of survival would be very good in any case.

If I might comment, you managed to get that education. In early 19th century, there was simple no way you would have gone to VWO level, had you been a simple peasant.

Being a nobleman meant little in the 1795-1813 period, you would not receive a special treatment just because you were from old nobility...unless you were rich, ofcourse.

In 1813, any Dutch nobleman shouting 'oranje boven' would receive a commision...and I'm not even kidding.

And guys, please remember that musket-armed light infantry would fight in line just as much as their mates in the line.  ::)

And forgive me for spoiling all the fun. I blame it on my Dutchness.

I have though of that, though, with the nobility in mind, and considering tey were probably higher mid-class...Debatable

Organize (,dress) and arm 50 men and you'll be a lieutenant. Make it 500 and you'll be a lieutenant-colonel. Don't look surprised when you are kicked out of the army a year later to be replaced by a REAL soldier.

Being an officer ain't all that jolly, either. Lots of paperwork and responsibility. The higher pay grade and privileges don't necessarily count up to that.

Paperwork, paperwork, paperwork, drink booze, paperwork, drink booze during paperwork, show up at some ball\social occasion to drink more booze and chase skirt\let the skirt chase you, or alternatively complain you had month's paperwork unfinished and you were dragged there, paperwork, more paperwork, drink booze, enjoy dysentery, get yelled the incompetent courier lost your message by your superior officer, more paperwork, realise the unit is in shoddy state, report, more reports and paperwork and booze, get yelled because your men showed up drunk, more paperwork, supervise the punishments tec, lose other your leg from knee and below thanks to a cannonball - or alternatively too many balls from muskets, enjoy field surgery, and if you survive enjoy more paperwork in non-combat duties, or get discharged.

Where can I sign up?  :P

It's a Cossack of the 6th cavalry regiment of the Chernigov opolchenie. The Opolchenie were pretty well the definition of irregulars.

By those standards pretty much half the NL army was irregular.

Sure, they were armed, dressed and trained, but they were called 'militia'.

The second url is 18330 characters long. I've read novels shorter than that.

That cossack looks pretty regular to me.
There was only one regular Cossack unit-the Life Guard Cossack Regiment.

My family recently purchased a horse at a place very close (convenient) and we went riding today. I almost forgot how good it feels to be in the saddle. Although we were only supposed to go no more than a trot I brought the horse into a canter as the arena - which previously had a few other horses in it - was now empty. I'm very confident in the saddle and given my height and weight I would easily qualify physically for any light cavalry role. Not to mention cavalry is in my family. I would probably have signed up for a hussar regiment just because I fancy the idea of a hussar charge. But I'd probably be better off in the role of a light dragoon or chasseur a cheval.

Lets see, with my lineage, part of my family comes from a village called Pry, Belgium in Wallonia so if I enlisted in time for Waterloo I most likely would have joined up with the 8th Hussars and either died counter-charging the French lancers at Waterloo or survived like a badass hero.

Another part of my family is from Antwerp in Flanders so if I would have enlisted from there I probably would have joined up with the 5th Light Dragoons and seen some good action, I don't know much about the Merlen Brigade (Duuring fill me in plox?) so I'm not sure what my odds of surviving would have been, I'm pretty sure they were better than if I was with the 8th Hussars, not as heroic though :P of course if I wanted to be a hussar badly enough I could have travelled south to join the 8th hussars or north to join the 6th hussars.

The 5th saved the 6th by covering their retreat at quatre-bras, and were then repelled by superiot numbers themselves. At Waterloo, their commander refused to take orders from Boreel (A Dutchman) after Van Merlen(brigade commander) died, and the brigade pretty much ceased to exist.

The 8th hussars kinda was a club of rich gentlemen, the 6th hussars was a regiment of peasants in a fancy uniform( though I shouldn't talk like that about my own regiment :p). They didn't do bad, they just had a lot of bad luck.
Not much for heroism, though. If you survived, you had a small change of a medal, but that's about it. Even men who got horribly wounded had to return to fullfil their service. That's the army for ya.

The 8th by the way, was in Van Gighny's brigade, together with the (Dutch) 4th Light Dragoons.

I like the think that given I am a country boy I would be in a light horse regiment of some kind.

What kind of person even browses through the pages in a section like that. Scrubs don't use the recent unread topics page?

I'm extremely broad shouldered and I'm fairly short for my age, so I really have no idea what unit I'd think I'd fit in.

I've always wondered this myself.

I am 6'1 and not skinny but not fat. I'd say MAYBE a grenadier. I'd rather be a CO though. Now for what faction? I have Irish and German roots so it would be hard to tell.

Given my height (5'3"), I'd probably be a light infantryman. Given my weight... well, if I was in the Napoleonic Wars I wouldn't be this weight, so yeah, a light infantryman / rifleman.

I hear ya, 5'6 and 140lbs here. I'd definitely be a Voltigeur or a Riflemen as well.

I'm tall (6'1") so probably a grenadier guard or something. I'm also super skinny but I doubt I would be sitting around playing videogames and not getting fit in the Napoleonic wars. Or maybe I would. Hmmmm.

I'm extremely broad shouldered and I'm fairly short for my age, so I really have no idea what unit I'd think I'd fit in.

The 1st Munich Fightin' Munchkins Division

Heh, I guess I'm gonna be the person who shoots for the groin and stabs at the ankles.

A cannonball fired out of an  12 pounder had an speed of around 550 meters a second. Please tell me how to see it (a small ball on a battlefield full of smoke) and then react fast enough to get to the ground.

5'7", 170 lbs. Really stout, the build and mentality of a grenadier, and if what I've read is correct the requirement to qualify as a grenadier is 173.5cm, or 68 inches, though the average height was 170.25cm, or 67 inches(5'7"). If this is accurate I believe I could be a grenadier, however it is probably more realistic to say that I would be line infantry.

Either Line Infantry or Artillery.

I cannot ride a horse, and I'm not very fast nor strong, but I could most certainly be in Line Infantry. Loud bangs do not frighten or scare me so Artillery might also be for me. I'm torn between those two.

I have several factors to take into consideration for this one. First off, my Scottish heritage, so during the Napoleonic Wars, my family would've still been in Scotland. Secondly, my size. I am about average, early teens and 5'1, not fat, but not lanky or lean either. Average. Most people also say that I excel in leadership, and I also have a good understanding of Napoleonic formations, tactics, etc. I am a fairly good shot, and fully understand the flintlock mechanism. I am also not bad with a sword. I am also fairly strong, despite my size. All things considered, I would most likely be a centre or heavy company captain in a highlander regiment.

While there were certain areas where diseases were more active, things like tyfhus and cholera were present everywhere. Throw a bunch of people together on limited space and you'll get diseases, even in the 21st century.

Being a marksman required great physical strength and endurance, probably more than a regular musketeer. Being agile and scaling uneven terrain while also having to ram a ball down a rifles barrel is very demanding stuff.

In the French army you didn't need to be a noble to be in the artillery, which is how Napoleon was an officer in his artillery regiment.

Somewhere around 166-168 for the French, if I remember correctly.

Aye, so most of us have the makings for a junior commission!

Commissions were worth a lot of money at first (The first purchase of rank was the most expensive) but after that all you had to do was pay the difference in cost between your current rank and the next rank above making it a little cheaper. It was still very expensive though as you say. Also you really didn't have to be very aristocratic. Arthur Wellesley for example was not incredibly aristocratic when he gained his first commission and was actually in debt for much of his young years due to it and him trying to buy higher commissions. So long as you had the money you'd often take you.

(I spotted that I put "due to my high" I meant "due to my height")
Title: Re: What would you have been?
Post by: Duuring on March 28, 2016, 06:19:49 pm
Most British officers were insanely in debt. There wasn't much to do besides gamble away whatever you earned (and more). Being a junior officer wasn't really about earning your living, it was about doing a sorta useful and not totally disgraceful job until you either found yourself at a high enough station to actually make more money then you could spend, or use it as a way to lift yourself in a position of importance. First sons didn't join the army, not as officers and not as enlisted men.

Way too tall to be light infantry, my friend. You'd fit in more with the grenadiers. As for coming from middle class farmers in Brandenburg, you'd be better off than most poor city folk and small time tennant farmers, but not by miles. A common grenadier, that's what you would be.

Being honest we have to put this in context, people we shorter back then, thus it is un-likely that many of us will end up being Line Infantry or Light Infantry. Also, what classes for middle class? I would put lower middle at maybe an earning of £35,000 for a family, but I don't know. Going at that rate, I am just about Lower Middle Class, and it is recorded, that although they may not have been able to afford comissions, often families of the lower middle and middle classes found benifactors to help fund for comissions, so, it is most likely I would have been a Private or Lieutenant, now of which branch is another matter: I am quite Intellectual, I know a lot about military history and I am quite thin about 5' 10", so, I think either a Private, (depending on how far my education would've went), or a Lieutenant depending on whether or not my family was able to find a benifactor for me.

Size wasn't actually that important. It's not like 5 cms more will get you automatically far more likely to get killed then the other person also wearing bright uniforms and a big black hat. Research in the French Registers clearly show men of 'wrong' heights in various units, just like it clearly shows men without the necessary experience being recruited into the Guard.

Indeed, some people were sent in the Garde because their officer wanted to get rid of them ! (memories of Coignet)

About the experience, for example the Vélites de la Garde Impériale were specifically unexperimented men, but educated. This education was supposed to led them to an officer charge but first they had to learn to be a ranker in the Garde Impériale. Most of them (as Bourgogne wrote it) were very young men, teamed up with an old grenadier. Most of them saw their first battle at Eylau !

----

I like to think that, as in reenactement today, I would have been a light infantryman. I like the scouting duty, the "freedom" of not being oppressed in a big line, the pleasure of a good shot. Technically, i'm too tall to be a light infantry man and would probably end up as a dragoon. Considering I have an education, if I did survived the revolutionary wars, I can imagine I would have been Aide de Camp to a Colonel in 1796-1798. Probably followed by a post in the diplomacy as Caulaincourt. "Only if"  ::)
