I feel it's more tactical than just who is "stronker". If skirms make it into a square safely, the skirms and the square stand strong and cavalry has to retreat with casualties more often than not. Otherwise the cavalry can reign supreme, having a powerful shock force and maneuverability behind them. It's always such a thrill to see these battles waged by the best of men... and a damning responsibility to command one
