That officer you heard being there was more of just a civilian on holiday than a uniformed military advisor. It'd be sort of, well illegal for him to do that.

And he didn't wear his damn uniform either. That was just a stylised detail in the movie.

Colonel Fremantle was not an advisor to the Confederacy, he was an observer, and observed both the Union and the Confederate armies. Since he arrived in Texas on a Royal Navy ship, he may well have had his uniform about his person on his travels, however wearing it might have given the wrong impression.

However, numerous Confederate and Union (not as much as in the CSA) officers were British due to their military experience.

Kind of curious to know which Union/Confederate generals were former British citizens. I know a lot of them were direct descendents of some obviously.

I managed to get sucked into reading a bunch of stuff about this topic this very afternoon when you mentioned Fremantle not allowed to be in uniform on a battlefield :P

Here are some of the sites:

Englishmen in the Confederate Service
The Unknown Contributions of Brits in the American Civil War
British Involvement in the American Civil War under "Those that Fought"

I've also come across this site, which accounts for authorised foreign observers and even has a picture of some in uniform (so it would probably be historically accurate to have an authorised observer in uniform in N&S).

Caption reads: More views of these British and other foreign observers on McClellan's staff

I actually thought it was 5x better than Gettysburg. It was a lot more immersive into the life of one of the most charismatic generals of the wall, Jackson.

Personally I found the Extended version of G&G on par yet slightly better than Gettysburg.
