- The NW Cavalry international competition returns for a fourth edition -

Hello to all the Cavalry Community of Napoleonic Wars, and welcome to the thread of the official 2017 edition of the Cavalry Nations Cup.
This is the only international tournament in the Cavalry community. I have hosted 3 previous editions of it in 2014, 2015 and 2016 with the precious help of various co-organizers, all of these editions were successes. I hope I will be able to bring you a quality event as well as fun and epic matches for you to play, no matter which national team you are a part of.

Cavalry Nations Cup 2014 Champion: Poland
Cavalry Nations Cup 2015 Champion: France
Cavalry Nations Cup 2016 Champion: United Kingdom

In this tournament, no teams has even been able to retain the champion title they had won the year before. Therefore it is more than fair to expect an extremely close competition, in which every player will need to be at his very best in order to triumph.
Gentlemen draw swords. And may the best team win and lift the Cavalry Napoleonic Wars 2017 Champion Trophy!

The 2017 Cavalry Nations Cup will begin on Monday 13th November.

"Cavalry is useful before, during, and after the battle. Without Cavalry, battles are without result."
- Napoléon Ier, Emperor of the French.

1. Teams will only be composed of players who have the nationality of their team's country/countries.
2. Teams will be composed of 12 players minimum, 21 players maximum.
3. Teams containing coalitions between countries will only be allowed by the organizers, on the condition that this is the only way
for these countries to play due to low numbers.
4. Matches will be allowed to be played with either 8, 10 or 12 players minimum. Captains will decide it when they set their matches up.
If both Captains can't agree on a maximum number of players, I will be the one who decides. No more than 12 players allowed on the field per team.
5. If a team doesn't bring enough players, they will play with what they have, but the team they face will still be allowed to have the
decided minimum number of men fighting.
6. Teams will have to pick one unit between the following: Hussar, Cuirassier, Dragoon, Lancer, and will have to stick to it throughout the competition.
7. Matches will be 'first to 8'.
8. To win a round, a team has to kill everyone in the enemy team.
9. Picking enemy weapons and horses is allowed, like in a standard 1v1 regimental cavalry fight. Lances however can not be picked up.
10. Behave ! Do not tea-bag, and keep the global chat to a minimum.
11. Listen to the admins and what they say.
12. Matches' organization will be up to the Captains of the teams which have to face each other every week. They have to post a date and hour,
and then I will give a referee and server to this match.
13. One officer (the Team Captain or the Vice Captain if the Captain isn't there) per team may be on the field, to lead his men.
14. Shooting is strictly forbidden. If an officer or a ranker is caught firing his pistol, referees will reset the round, and the team
of the guilty man will loose one point.
15. Team members and captains alike are asked to remain calm at all time if they are unhappy with any decision a referee or I can make. If they wish to express their discontent they must do it on this FSE thread, and write it politely. No insults or in-game complaints will be accepted.
16. Players must wear the tags they were signed-up with in their team's roster. They may change things in it, but must keep the original name visible. For example: a player signed as Potato can join the servers with the tag "DeadlyPotato", but not "DeadlyBottle".
17. Teams playing as lancers are not allowed to use the couched lance ability of the unit. If a player does it, he will be slain. If it continues, points might be taken off the guilty team. This goes for other classes who might pick a lance on the ground.

Match Previews

Spain vs France - 24/11

MATCH PREVIEW

Tonight, a match between two of the most popular teams in the Cavalry Nations Cup is going to happen. France is facing Spain in a match that will probably be one of the biggest clashes of group A. Throughout the years, these two nations have always shown great skills, dedication and organization, leading France to a Champion title in 2015, and Spain to a solid bronze medal that same year.
This year even seems a little bit more spicy than the previous ones because, if France is sticking to its traditional hussar class, Spain is trying out the lancer class, newly welcomed into the Cavalry Nations Cup. This match promises us to be both tense and extremely entertaining for everyone to watch and enjoy. The players will need to give their very best if they want to triumph.
Let us now take a look at the teams, their forces, and what we will need to look out for tonight. For all who want to spectate, feel free to jump on CavNationsCup_1 tonight at 20:30 GMT (British Time).

TEAM PRESENTATION

France has always been one of the main challengers for the champion title of the Cavalry Nations Cup. The team has reached the final on all three of the previous editions, winning it once in 2015 against the Germanic Countries. But if this can been seen as a sign of success and consistency, the French seem to struggle when it comes to moments as crucial as a final can be. One win, right, but two defeats, against Poland in 2014, and against the United Kingdom in 2016. France is a team that has the potential of being amongst the very best, but tends to be in trouble when it comes to the big game.

And be assured, tonight's match against Spain is a big match, and will decide a lot of what happens next in group A. So France will have to learn from its past mistakes, and step up its game in order to try and reach a victory against the Spaniards.

In 4 Cavalry Nations Cup, France has been under the command of three Captains: Lubukill, Tardet & Erik. It is not an example of rare stability, and tensions in the French community always made it difficult for all Captains to gather everyone in the same team. Even though it always managed to get good results, the French team has continuously changed throughout the years. This year, the French team is composed of a variety of 7e, 9e and 4e Hussards members forming its core, and has a few members from different (mostly international) cavalry regiments. All of these players have been playing Napoleonic Wars for many years, and can be considered as veterans of the game. However the team itself did not have that much playtime together, and is still rather young. Finding the right chemistry will be a key to this match for France, against a very experienced Spanish side.

The French team plays with the Hussar class, as it has done on all previous editions. It is undoubtedly the class that the French players know best, so there was not a lot of discussions as to which class they would pick. An extra threat comes from Spain playing as lancers, which is a class France has not yet encountered in a CNC match. A great element of tension around is match is wether the French will be able to deal with the lancers' advantages and attack them on their weaknesses.

TEAM PRESENTATION

Unlike France, one of Spain's main strength is their consistency in keeping the same (extremely powerful) core of players, and organization.
Spain is led by Traeeseron. There is no need to introduce him, as he simply has been the Captain of the team 4 years in a row, from 2014 to 2017. And it is more than fair to say that the Spaniard is blessed with a core of vastly experienced players, on who he always relied to create his Spanish team. Obviously, some changes have happened within the years, but Spain might very well been the team that has seen the same players fight for it on the most occasions.

This base of players is composed of veterans of the game, who have been playing it for several years. They have all played Napoleonic Wars in the past, but their recent focus has been put on Native, and other modules such as Mercenaries, in which many of them are considered amongst the very best of all cavalry players. Quite scary, given the fact that competition on Native is organized in a very serious way, with multiples events including large prizes and such things. Any team that has a Spaniard horseman in it, may it be on NW, Native or any other module, can feel blessed by it.

Helping Traeeseron is Victor, a NW player who has been a part of a Spanish dragoons regiment, before joining the 4e Hussards in which he became a very important and valued member. He knows cavalry competition on NW, and has taken part in nearly all he could participate in for the past few years. He also is a force that Spain can count on to reach victory.

In the three previous editions of the Cavalry Nations Cup, Spain has always been playing as Cuirassiers, as it the class that most of the players liked and knew the most. This year, a radical change happened, since Spain chose to go with the Lancer class. Given the fact that several of their players are from Native, it is fair to say fighting with a lance should not be a problem to them. If Spain manages to use their class to its full capacity, they can be a real and very serious threat to any team facing them. And France is not kept out of it.

CONCLUSION
Tonight's match will definitely be a match to watch, to take part in, and to be remembered. The first big clash between a powerful Hussar team, and an experienced Lancer team. It will be one of the biggest and toughest fight that Group A has to offer, and both teams will need to be extremely focused, motivated, and at their very best in order to get a win. No matter what the score can be tonight, it is fair to believe that every round will be close.
Great skills will be shown by both sides, hard and important decisions might have to be taken by the two captains in order to get the most out of their teams, and the result of this match will greatly influence the other matches to come in Group A.
Best of luck to both teams, let it be a cavalry fight to remember.

- Many thanks to Tardet for sending me the template's code of this preview.

Interviews

Blucher, North American Captain - By Erik - 26/11

- Interview -

Blucher, North America Captain

Q. Since some of we Europeans do not know much about the North American community, the first questions will be about it. Can you introduce yourself a little bit?

Blucher: I have been playing Napoleonic Wars for two years now. I have spent quite some time in the European community, since I have been a part of The Royal Hussars (TRH), the Nr.9 (a German cavalry regiment), and the 9e Hussards (an international but European one). I am in command of a regiment in the North American community, it is called the Nr.5. My main achievement with it was a third place in the North American Cavalry League.

Q. Is cavalry as big a thing as it is here in Europe? Is there a lot of regiments, and what does competition look like there?

Blucher: There are about 8 cavalry units in total in North America. Four of them are actual cavalry regiments, and two of them have been around forever: the PLG and the 1LH. Most of the rest is cavalry detachments, that are part of infantry regiments. I personally think it kinda sucks. Regarding competition, it is pretty tough and close between the very best regiments, but the rest has a much lower lever, there is a clear gap. Still, I would say a good European cavalry regiment would have a fair and close match with a regiment like the 1LH if there were to fight with an equal ping.
We have a Cavalry League in North America. We had three seasons so far, which went pretty well for the most of it.

Q. This is your very first time leading a team in the Cavalry Nations Cup. How does it feel to be the Captain of a team? How do you and your Vice-Captain work together?

Blucher: I would say I like it, and I don't like it in the same way. There is a lot of pressure, I feel like I have to give my best in every match. We have a lot of really good players in the team, so I try to be on their level because I don't want them to be wasting their time with a Captain who's not up to expectations. But obviously overall it is a great experience, I get to spend time and play with some of the best North American cavalry players.
About my Vice-Captain (SillyWilly), he's in the PLG. PLG and the Nr.5 are kind of rivals, there was a little bit of drama during the NA CNWL. But we both play together in TRH, so we have always been in good terms. He's a guy I really like working with, I feel that we're doing a good job together.

Q. The NA team is obviously going to be disadvantaged in an european competition, due to high pings. Do you and your team have an objective you'd want to reach, despite this disadvantage?

Blucher: Well I'd say our aim was to get to the semi-finals, but the ping is obviously going to make it difficult for us. We are taking the competition very seriously, and we will try our best at every match. We won against Turkey in a friendly match before the CNC started, so I am confident that, if we play the right way, we can put the european teams in trouble.

Q. Is there a match in your group that you are most eager to play? And why?

Blucher: Probably the match against the United Kingdom. I know their Vice-Captain (Cage), and I have played with many of their members in the EU communities I have been in. We'll definitely try our best against the Brits.

Q. And a match in any group that you are most eager to spectate?

Blucher: Probably Benelux vs United Kingdom. I think it'll be one of the closest matches, very tense as well. The result will impact us a lot as well, since Benelux has won against us, if the United Kingdom won this match we'd be somewhat back in the semi-final race.

Q. Out of four (including this one) CNCs hosted since 2014, North America has only taken part in two, in 2014 under Peppers, and in 2017 under you. Do you feel proud of being able to get this team back into the tournament? Did you get supported by the big players of the North American community?

Blucher: Peppers said that there was a lot of snobbery from some of the European teams, and to be honest I feel the same thing. We're not always considered as we should be, but this is fine by us as we want to show that there are more than capable cavalry players in North America. Some of the biggest NA players did not give us their support, but it was no big deal for me as I prefered to choose players with the lowest pings on EU servers.
We're very glad to be back into the competition, even if it's much harder for us due to high pings and diffucult match hours. The team is as motivated as I am to show its worth.

Erik, French Captain & Organizer, By Narsus, 29/11

- Interview -

Erik, French Captain
Organizer of the 2017 Cavalry Nations Cup

Q. First of all, as an experienced player of the community, and organiser of every CNC, how do you feel this year’s cup has been so far in terms of activity, matches and drama, in comparison to the years before this?

Erik: In terms of activity, I would say this year’s Cup has been very good. As we all know, the community is slowly becoming less active and the number of people joining regiments and communities is dwindling, but, many veteran and active players showed interest and requested that this tournament run one last time in 2017, and so, my hesitation faded, and I began preparation. Because of this willingness of players, everyone is already very motivated to do their best in every match, and I honestly think that is why the matches have been so good so far. On FSE the thread had already exceeded 40 pages in the first 3 weeks of the tournament, and yet I think last year’s thread stopped just below 40. I think this proves how much the community wanted this tournament and their willingness to participate. About drama, there is drama every year. Maybe there is a little more drama this year, it seems that way, but shit happened, and I dealt with it as efficiently as I thought to do so. I’ve always tried my best to keep these events drama-free, I very much like being in control of what happens and therefore unnecessary drama is simply unwanted to me, and the rest of the team of helpers. As you all know, this year I tried to make some changes to the tournament such as the introduction of Lancers. This obviously caused an uproar with some people, but you can never make everyone happy, so I just aim to make the majority happy. No one is forced to play for their nation, and therefore if they feel so strongly about those changes then they are free to leave as they please. But overall, we’ve seen some really good matches this year, so I honestly think the Cup can be in anyone’s hands.

Q. France’s team this year is obviously home to some of the best players in this year’s cup, as Cpt, how do you balance training as a team and letting your players do their own thing, seeing as so many of them are already so experienced?

Erik: I’m pretty blessed with some of the best cavalry players this game has to offer in the French team, and I appreciate that. It’s a big pleasure to lead them, no one is here to troll and their mentality was good from the beginning, so the mood of the team is very good. In all honesty, we didn’t do much preparation before the CNC, we did a couple of practice matches against Germany and the United Kingdom, which are 2 of the big contender for this competition, and managed to win both matches, but it was very close. Overall, the team had a rather short but difficult preparation. I actually think this was the right thing to do as I didn’t want the team to be overconfident by beating every team there was before we even started for real, or losing lots of matches and dropping the morale before we started. I believe this short but sweet preparation helped to hone some rusty skills for some of the members but allow them to adopt the right mentality. The team is a mix of 9e, 4e and 7e with a few more guys from other diverse regiments. Getting everyone to know each other and start playing as a team is difficult, but we are getting there, and because of this I am starting to see some good team spirit. On the field, I do speak a lot and give lots of advice to the team, I know they are all seasoned veterans, but I think keeping that communication up is the key to success. They all have their own ways of doing things, their own ways of getting out of certain situations, and as long as it works, they are allowed to do it. It is only when they ignore commands and then get killed because of this that I get bossy. The rule of thumb is: if it works, then keep doing it. I’m very much looking forward to our future matches to see how well we can all work together, I believe we can improve much more.

Q. In the FRA v ESP match, ESP had changed their class from the usual Cuirassiers to Lancers. How did you and your team think to oppose this change, and how was this strategy implemented into your real match?

Erik: In the end we only had two trainings against lancers before our match with Spain. I asked friendly communities to play as lancer against us, but I do not think this was all that efficient. The people we asked to help us train were not originally lancers, and therefore they were not playing against us with the ferocity that Spain brought to the table. The people we trained against were mainly Hussars and Infantry, so this was to be expected. In the real match, what we tried to do was exploit their weaknesses and avoid their strengths. We had some rounds where we only lose a few men, and the rounds we won were generally by a large margin, but as soon as we gave them the chance to make use of their strengths, they punished us for it. Because of this, it was a very close match.

Q. The first two rounds of your match against Spain were quite smooth sailing for France, giving you a 2-0 advantage. Would you say the cause of Spain’s eventual win was because something changed in the way that your team played, or was it simply Spain adapting and improving as the game continued?

Erik: I’d say it was probably a bit of both. The match was a continual change of tactics, on both sides I would say. We started off really nicely as you said, but we let them come back. That evidently cost us a lot. It was a series of change, whoever adapted faster won the rounds. It was mostly a 1 round margin between the two teams, but at one point we were losing 5-3. We did manage to pull it back though to 5-5 to get us back in the game, as we knew if they had a big advantage then it was game over for us. Throughout the match I think there was a lot of thinking involved, so from a spectator point of view I think it would have been interesting to see how both France & Spain changed as the match progressed.

Q. Your match with ESP was undoubtedly one of the closest ever to happen across the last 4 years of this tournament, how did it feel to play in that match and how did you keep your men motivated when morale was dropping?

Erik: Honestly, I think our match against Spain was one of the best matches any CNC has ever had to offer. 15 rounds were played in the end, totalling a playtime of 1.5hours. Were I a spectator in this match, I’m sure I would have enjoyed watching it a lot, however, from a player’s point of view, it was very stressful. I did like the challenge the match had to offer, but I often found myself getting frustrated with my own performance in this match as I genuinely believe I was one of the worst contributors to the match that day. In a team sense, I don’t think we ever once lost morale. We never doubted that we could come back and win this game, so we just tried our best throughout and never gave up on victory. Even when we were two rounds down, as I said before, we managed to pull back through by keeping spirits high. In matches I do tend to listen to what my players have to say and what their opinions are on different situations (even if I do sometimes ignore it), but as I said before I will always advise what I believe to be best, and to be honest, I didn’t have to say anything to them to keep the spirit up. Overall, as a cavalry player that game was very intense but also extremely enjoyable.

Q. Last week's match against Spain was the first time France lost a group stage match in CNC history. How do you feel about that?

Erik: I do consider our defeat against the Spaniards a failure, but not as a critical one. It sucks a lot to be losing a group stage match, but we do have the benefit of not being out of the competition entirely. I know we have what we need to go far into the tournament, so yes, this defeat is a failure, but it will not kill us. We have to make sure we win all the rest of the matches to qualify for the Semi-Finals, and once we get there, it can become anyone’s match. It doesn’t change anything that we lost, we have exactly the same aims and mentality as at the start of the competition, and I’m sure we will get back on our feet as soon as the next match comes. It’s not as if the defeat was a humiliation, we lost 8-7. If there were two more rounds than we may have won it, we just happened to lose at the 8 round mark. I don’t think it has made anything harder for us as I was expecting tough Semi’s no matter if we came first or second in the group stage. I’m sure all teams once in the Semi-Finals will have a hard time winning. Just to note as well, last year UK lost badly to France in the group stage, it was 8-2, but they ended up beating France in the final with an 8-5 finish. This just proves that a group stage defeat is not a defeat for the whole CNC.

Q. Out of all the teams participating, are there any which you are really looking forward to playing, and why?

Erik: After our defeat against Spain, I’d say the match we are most looking forward to is against Poland. Poland has always been a tough opposition, and they are playing as Cuirassiers this year again, so we will need to adapt to that class as well. I also have a slight personal thing about beating Poland, because the last time I faced them was in the FRA v POL 2014 final, which we lost under my lead, so I’m really looking forward to a good, challenging revenge match. Beating Poland is probably our ticket to the Semi-Final, so there’s a lot riding on it. We can’t fail again.

Q. Similarly, were there any teams that at the very beginning of the tournament you were a bit apprehensive about fighting, and why?

Erik: No, none at all. For a simple reason, which is I gave myself and my team a clear aim in the CNC. We are participating to win and so there is no aim below that. Since we all agreed on that mentality, we can’t allow ourselves to be doubtful or pressured about a match. We have to win against every opponent we face eventually to get there anyway, so there’s no point doubting ourselves. If we play the right way, I truly believe we have this, and that’s the only way we can think if we want to win this CNC. Winning this is my last big aim as a member of the community. I had the honour of winning every tournament group-wise there is with the 4e, but I tripped on the last step as Captain of France in 2014. I will not allow that mistake to happen again this year. Sukesa and I both have this Cup as our last goal in this game, seeing as it’s the only title we haven’t won for ourselves, and so I wish for us to win it to finish off my career of Mount & Blade. CNC is probably the hardest thing to win Cavalry-wise, there’s been no finals that are completely one-sided, and we’ve had a different winner every year: Poland, France and UK, and so the thought of winning in such a difficult tournament makes me want it so much more.
