It is at the end of 1808 that the first three battalions of the 88e of Line crossing by Bayonne and coming from Germany cross the border with the colonel Michel Veilande, forming part of the new 5th Corps of the Army of Spain commanded by Mortier . The first of the major operations in which he participates is the siege of Zaragoza between October 1808 and February 1809, under the supervision of Lannes from January 1809. Then the regiment leaves for Asturias (Oviedo) and Salamanca; In August 1809 they participate in the battle of Arzobispo, then that of Ocana in November. Capitaine Veilande is hurt there. At the end of 1810, here is the 5th Corps in front of Cadiz, the Carolina and Ecija and while the siege begins, it has to clean the surrounding strongholds and it is thus that we find the 88e with the catch of Olivenza (11 January 1811), at the Battle of Gevora with the 34e Ligne and the 100e Ligne (19 February 1811) against the Spanish General Mendizabal. Meanwhile a new colonel: François Letourneur is brought to the head of the regiment. With new leadership commanding the 88e, the regiment set out to march to Badajoz, a small fortress in central Spain. The March was said to be extremely difficult, lasting 12 days in raining conditions. Badajoz, once assaulted by the 88e and other various regiments, was easily taken. The unit is then taken to Badajoz (March 10, 1811), then to Campo Mayor on March 14. The 88e did not suffer heavy casualties; however, supplies were beginning to run low. On May 15th, the regiment received a hefty load of ammunition and rations. With little rest, the 88e continued the march. After cantonments in Zafra and incessant fighting against guerrillas, the 2nd and 3rd battalion of the 88e of Line fight at the Albuhera on May 16th and there are heavy losses (400 killed or wounded on a strength of approximately 900). Colonel Letourneur is himself wounded in battle for the first time since acquiring command of the regiment. It would be some time until the 88e received reinforcements from France. 1812 sees the heroic defense of Badajoz, this time by the French, including the 3rd battalion of the 88e Line who is taken prisoner there. This event caused catastrophic losses for the 88e; however, reinforcements from France began to arrive in early 1813. 1813 a battalion of the 88e is present at the battle of Vittoria at the 1st division of the Army of the South of Gazan; Failure brewing French who retreat on their border. The colonel will later be accused of looting his regimental crate in the chaos that followed the battle! The 88e in Taupin division, will fight at Sauroren during an attempt by Soult in July 1813 to deliver San Sebastian then Bayonne. This description sums up the 88e history in Spain during the Napoleonic Wars. The Regiment would receive honor awards for participating in the battles of Sédiman 1798, Austerlitz 1805, Wagram 1809, and La Moskowa 1812. It is to the memory of these brave men that the 88e d'Infanterie de ligna (1815) was formed a number of years ago. Following the abdication of Napoleon in 1814, the regiment was swiftly reesembled in Paris.With the return of Napoleon from exile, the 88e travelled to Belgium in May 1815.
