Studying for my A levels at the minute and I'm not exactly sure which path I want to pursue. I was originally thinking of heading off to University to get my history degree but it seems to me that the options are quite limited for a career in that field. I'm increasingly feeling like that path will limit me to a job that I don't want to be doing. As I think about it more and more, I hate the thought of being locked up in a boring job 24/7 so I was considering the military, if not for the pay then for the life satisfaction. Would appreciate anybody who has served in the British army here to let me know how their experience went.

If you're serious then get yourself down to the reserves and join up. Usually quite a few ex-regulars among them so they'll be able to tell you more than anyone on here about it as a career. Also a history degree is perfectly fine and won't constrain you-I know plenty of people who studied history and are in a diverse range of careers.

Just two cents. A majority of Norwegian diplomats have political and/or historical degrees. The Exterior always looks for specialised knowledge.
-
Ah right fair enough. I’ve not decided either way yet but thanks for the info guys

Forgot to add that the same presumably applies for your country's Exterior, too.

Studying history because I want to work in a museum! nokappa

I am not in the British military but consdering you're doing A levels it seems like you'd be eligible for OCS, which is what I am doing in the Netherlands. If you feel like info you can PM me if you want.
Joining the reserves as suggested is a good thing to orient yourself and would also help you greatly in the application process, should you decide to follow through.
Added to that, well if I manage to pass the Military academy in the Netherlands I am looking at an army career so yeah.
-
My career? Kindergarten. It's just like leading a regiment, srsly

If you're gonna join the military choose an MOS that has real life career attributes, Intel/radiation/uranium specialist, etc... don't be the normie who goes infantry, or go an officer route. In the US, the Naval Academy produced the 2nd highest salaries after graduation, beating all the averages of every Ivy League, same for West Point

Studying Political Sciences, History, and Economics and still don't quite know what I want to do. I'm quite passionate about politics but everyone around me has been putting me down and telling me how there's no money in that field. I don't have a desire to earn the largest amount of money possible rather to make this world a better place for the societies that I am part of. So I basically have no idea what i'm doing.

Wait you are also studying political science? lol what a coincidence.
There are jobs in that field, NGO, advisory positions etc. Dont let some morons tell you otherwise
-
Recee is difficult to handle, but once you do - it's fun, really.

I second that - i earn probably around 400-420 dollars per month on service in my country - still i love my job.
-
Where the fuck are you from then?
-
Wait so you earn less than 5,000 dollars a year? What country?
-
Naval, army and Air Force officers out of OCS in the states make $70,000+ per year, not including everything else, they make way more than average graduates out of college

Ukraine, here you can die for less than a 500$ per month.

I hardly expect a second lieutenant to make 70k a year

I meant OCS as in the academies for each branch, https://www.forbes.com/pictures/mkl45egjff/7-united-states-military-academy-usma-at-west-point/
Not the actual OCS for people who already have a degree, or active duty E-5s+
-
So you're saying that a West-Point graduate on average earns 77k? I really hope that is not an army career.... I mean.... You can practically look up my salary when I get out of the academy... I tell you I won't ever make THAT sum after 5 years....
-
I've read British officers are paid around 30k on commission which isn't so bad tbh. Crap that they're included in the government pay cap though.
-
IT Network Engineer/Cisco ASA Engineer
A career in IT is a very good place to go at the moment just because it pays well and you can take on apprenticeships for a year that pay enough that will take you into a full placement.
I did a level 3 earning 11k that year then moved into a full position for 27k.
(UK perspective obviously)

Which is still quite good, considering that the average Kiev wage is around 200-400 $ a month. It is not great, but it is quite good for ukrainian standards.

If your are younger then 17 you can join the militairy school, thats what i wanted but i did not get accepted, right now 2 years after my injury my pain is less then before, because of all the medical care, right now i dont have much pain and i can just dance normally.

You can apply for the military at 16.5 in the NL and start basic training at 17.
As for his knee, there might not practically be anything wrong with his knee, meaning e can probably dance just fine. THe military won't accept him because the chance of him getting injured are too high, meaning there is a chacne he'll drop out, which is too high fo their liking.

I used to be in the military too. Then I took an arrow in the knee.

Good idea for a thread.
Interesting to see how many are thinking about the military for a career.
I'm in my 4th year of a medical degree, currently thinking about either A&E, Paediatrics or both as specialties, but still have a while to make up my mind. Also keeping in mind other countries as options if things get much worse. Definitely going to take a year out after Foundation Years to locum, travel and explore different career options. One of my housemates is taking 2 years out starting this summer to do the same thing.

Enrolling in a general computer science degree with the plan to focus on cyber security after. Still deciding whether or not to work for the government or head into the private sector.
-
Currently in the USMC reserves leaving for boot camp in 2 weeks. MOS is data networking, basically IT. With all the credits and certificates I get through my job training in programming, networking, and cyber security I'll be going to college aswell and hopefully getting a degree in software engineering. End goal is to stay in the reserves but also work for a high end company or potentially at the Pentagon.
After University maybe I'll go on a tour for fun, depends on where I am in life and if I have any job offers towards the end of my schooling.

Personally, I've gone through several career changes and found that vocational training programs can be a fantastic way to gain the skills needed for specific jobs.
-
One piece of advice I can offer is to always keep learning and stay updated with industry trends. It's incredible how vocational training can provide you with practical skills that are directly applicable to your chosen field.
