About the Regiment The regiment has been active for 6 years!
On April 18, 1807, Prince Eugene wrote to the Emperor: "... The 4th battalions of the 5th, 11th, 60th and 79th cannot enter the line since none of the officers of the depots are likely to campaign, but as they have magnificent companies of grenadiers, I have them join the Duhesme division so that this division can have 8 battalions of 8 companies...". The Duhesme Division is an elite division of Grenadiers and Voltigeurs in Brescia.
Cattaro is finally returned to the French, after the Peace of Tilsitt (July 8, 1807) on August 15, 1807.
Reinforcements are sent to Dalmatia: the Clausel Division. Napoleon therefore wrote to Prince Eugène, from Saint-Cloud, on September 5, 1807: "To Eugène Napoléon, Viceroy of Italy My son, I receive the letter by which you inform me that you are going to review the Clausel division, in order to increase it to 5,000 men. My intention would be that this division should be increased to 9 or 10,000 men. In fact, the eight French regiments which are in Dalmatia have a present under arms of 10,000 men and form sixteen battalions.
Clausel's division has, according to the last statement of August 15, 4,540 men, and the depot of the eight regiments is composed of 5,000 men. The Duhesme division (Ancona division) of 1,000 men, belonging to five of these regiments. I therefore think that the Clausel division should be organized in this way, namely: 8th light, six companies of 200 men each, 1,200 men. Only the 6th, 7th and 8th companies will remain at the depot. The grenadiers and voltigeurs will be part of the six marching companies; 18th light (same composition) 1,200; 5th line (operating seven companies of 200 men), 3,400; 23rd, seven companies of 200 men, 4,400; 11th, seven companies of 200 men, 1,400; 79th, 1,400; 60th, 1,400; 81st, three companies of 200 men, 600. Total, 10,000 men.
The division would therefore be composed of two battalions of six companies each, forming 2,400 men from five battalions of seven companies each, 7,000; and a battalion of three companies, 600 men. Total, 10,000 men. You will also send 300 Brescians and 500 men of the royal guard, to march with Clausel's division, so that this division would march strong from 10 to 11,000 men, which, added to the army French from Dalmatia, would train more than 25,000 men; but these men must be well armed, well equipped, and already have the best education.
If therefore the 6,000 men who are at the depots do not seem to you sufficiently instructed and are not dressed on October 1, according to the order I will give, to go and reinforce General Marmont's corps, you will send out Clausel's division in the situation in which it now finds itself, that is to say, forming 5,000 men, but organized in such a way that there are only three companies per regiment: 1,200 men each. company. You feel its importance; it is necessary that these companies, arriving at their corps in Dalmatia, can pour into these corps what they have above 100 men. In this case, you will immediately prepare three other companies that you will send a month or six weeks later, so that on January 1st you will have sent to Dalmatia the 10,000 men who seem to me necessary there".
On October 1, 1807, the Emperor wrote from Fontainebleau to Eugène Napoléon, Viceroy of Italy: "My son, I have received your letter of the 22nd, in which you inform me that the Clausel division is more than 5,500 men. I see with sorrow that you did not carry out the order which I gave you to reduce the number of companies so that the 752 men of the 8th light formed only three companies of 225 men each; idem, for the 610 men of the 18th, for the 5th of line, you will make leave four companies; for the 11th, three; for the 23rd, four; for the 60th, three; for the 79th, three; and two for the 81st; of way that each company will be from 200 to 450 men. My intention is that these companies, arriving at Zara, be incorporated into the first two battalions, and that the cadres return to the army. the general of division, the two generals of brigade, will march with this division, to inspect its passage; but, when it will have arrived in Dalmatia and incorporated, all that will return to Italy. This division must be considered as a reinforcement division".
On October 30, 1807, the Emperor wrote from Fontainebleau to Eugène Napoléon, Viceroy of Italy: "My son, my intention would be to complete the two war battalions of the eight regiments which are in Dalmatia at the strength of 140 men per company or 2,520 men for the two battalions; have me draw a table which will let me know the situation of the army of Dalmatia on the 15th of October. You will understand the detachments that you sent with Clausel's division, the number of men that each regiment has in the hospitals of Dalmatia, the actual strength of each regiment, and what is missing for these eight regiments form a total of 20,160 men, including the sick. My intention is also that my Italian troops, which are in Dalmatia, be completed to the strength of 140 men per company. Before give any order to move, you will wait for the new orders that I will give as a result of the report you will give me".
The regiment was created towards the end of April 2016 by Maturet, who became Napo. It was originally named the 33rd Line Infantry Regiment. The regiment had a difficult start but fortunately survived thanks to a solid asset base. At the beginning of May 2016, the regiment joined the GIR, a Russian corps composed of different regiments with no real orientation. The following month, following a bad understanding and major problems in the body, the regiment made the decision to leave the corps. At the beginning of June sounds a bad patch for the regiment: the roster drops to 7 active members. After reflection, the last soldiers present decided to recruit massively.
Still in the abyss, the regiment decided to convert to Léger following the lack of manpower. This did not last, because in a short time, 27 new members arrived. The regiment redesignated itself as the 5th line infantry regiment. Eventually, they decided to join the Young Guard. But after a while they left, mainly due to a bad atmosphere within the body. The regiment was then became independent again and remained so for quite a while. Recruitment was regulated to avoid dissension, and the General Staff was reshuffled several times.
Since February 22, 2017, the 5th Line Infantry Regiment has taken the decision to accept a Cavalry company, led by Lapin and Charles, with the objective of becoming 2 regiments grouped together to unite Our skills. Unfortunately the company did not last due to differences between Line and Cavalry officers. At the end of April 2017, the 5th experienced a new crisis in the form of a coup d'etat, and was in edge of dissolution. Colonel Napo kept 5 active members and undertook to maintain the regiment for 1 month.
At the end of this month, the regiment came back to life, and the officers took the decision to watch over the grain in whom they placed their trust. The 5th therefore remained independent by aiming for a good atmosphere, both fun and competitive. In view of the decreasing numbers both in the 5th and in the majority of the French community, the 5th decided to join a corps in formation, the Foreign Legion, and intended to remain there. until the last days of Napoleonic. Unfortunately, due to a bad agreement, the 5th decided to remain independent.
