2nd Netherlands Light Cavalry Brigade - van Merlen's Horse

History
Led by General Jean Baptiste van Merlen, the 2nd Netherlands Light Cavalry Brigade was one of three Dutch and Belgian cavalry brigades to serve at the battle of Waterloo. Merlen's 2nd comprised the 5th (Belgian) Dragoons, and the 6th (Dutch) Hussars. Many of the troops in the brigade, including van Merlen himself, were former French troops who had defected to liberate their home country. At one point in the battle, on engaging with the 6th Chasseurs for Pire's Division, the French recognised the unit and called on their old comrades to defect. Merlen refused and ordered a charge. As it pulled back unsuccessful, their green uniforms were mistaken for the French Chasseurs by some British troops and they suffered further casualties form friendly fire. At Quatre Bras, the brigade was highly praised for its contribution to repulsing French cavalry attacks. General van Merlen was injured and killed at Waterloo, but not before releasing a former comrade - a general of the French army - saying  "General, this is my side of the battle, yours is over there. Take care of yourself; farewell!".

About us
We're a small Cavalry regiment dedicated to a high standard of quality in events, and a relaxed atmosphere outside of the game. We aim to provide a fair and balanced structure to our ranks, providing those who put time and effort into the regiment the chance to rise, but without any expectations being placed on our more casual members. We also aim to create a strong community, with ties outside of just Mount&Blade. We accept anyone, as long as they bring a decent level of maturity and respect the atmosphere and standard of the Regiment.

The 88e was formed from the French-Irish "Berwick" Regiment of Foot, a regiment of the Irish Brigade. The Berwick regiment and 5 other Irish regiments joined the French army in the early 18th Century, during the Williamite was. In exchange, the French sent 30,000 men to Ireland to aid in the war against the English crown. After the Revolution, the Irish Brigade stayed loyal to France and eventually swore fealty to Napoleon. In 1791, the Berwick Regiment became the 88e Regiment d'Infanterie. The 88e retained this title, becoming the 88e Demi-Brigade d'Infanterie between 1796 and 1803. Throughout the Empires, they fought at many important engagements, receiving battle honours at Ulm and Austerlitz in 1803 and later Essling and Wagram in 1809.

still under construction

Hi All, Althalus here again with a community. As per usual for me, this is the brief outline/hype builder thread that will be fleshed out with some fancy images and stuff once we get fully functional.

Basically, Warlance Gaming is going to offer a free TeamSpeak server for anyone that wants to use it. In partnership with Warlance Gameservers, we're also offering exclusive Game Server discounts to community members. More information listed below on both of these.

TeamSpeak: ts3.warlance.eu

Servers

We currently offer a TeamSpeak server that is open to members of the public (public channels), users of our servers, and Clans/Regiments from any game. In the very near future we will also be looking at providing Trainings servers in Mount and Blade: Warband, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and ARMA 2 and 3. Others may be added if the need arises. All of this will be provided free of charge for any community member.

Who's Welcome?

Anyone who's willing to abide by the rules is more than welcome to be a part of the community. People using our own servers will be free to naivgate the teamspeak at will, and to join any of our community events. To get your own section, you just need a Clan/Regiment/Guild/Team in ANY game, and you need to apply to join. After that, all we ask is that everyone sticks to our community rules and guidelines and helps out if they find themselves in the position to.

Hi all, this thread will be simple enough until this kicks off fully.

This package is designed for smaller regiments who are strapped for cash - I know the situation all too well.

TeamSpeak

Some channels on a 200 slot TeamSpeak server are available free for any Regiment, regardless of whether or not they purchase the training/linebattle package below. If you want slots on the server, simply add me on steam. I'll sort you out with a spot in our TS community.

Training/Linebattle server deal

At the moment we have one server online in Paris, France. (If I get interest I'll look at adding an NA server) It is 200 slots, and can easily handle that many players without lagspikes. The deal is quite simple - for €2 a month, you get full access to the server for 1 hour per week - during that time the server is private and yours to use for whatever you want. Outside of those times the server will be on Public mode and your members can recruit or hang out there if they like. An additional private hour per week is €1/hour.

For example - the 90th Perthshire Regiment of Foot wants a Linebattle on Friday at 7PM GMT, and training at 7PM GMT on Sundays. The total is €3/month.

As I said, this is for startup regiments, and the cost is only to help me shoulder the burden of the server (I'll most likely end up paying the majority anyway), the server is completely not-for-profit.

Admin pass will be changed weekly and circulated among regiment leaders.

Regiments / Choosing your Regiment - A guide
« on: August 09, 2013, 01:27:30 pm »

    Contents:

     - Overview
     - What you need
     - Knowing what you want
     - Time
     - Style
     - Faction
     - Size
     - Members and Nationality

    Overview:

Choosing a regiment can be as easy or difficult as you make it. Some people will join the first regiment that catches their eye. This guide is for those who want to put some more thought behind the decision. Remember, this regiment could give you hours of enjoyment, or it could just as easily ruin this game for you. Therefore, it is a choice that warrants a little time. At the end of the day, you want to be having fun when you're playing. I know all too well what it's like when playing this game becomes a chore, you don't want that.

As of the writing of this thread, there are somewhere in the region of 300 regiments on the official regiment list, with countless others not on the list. That means a lot of choice, and a lot of people that want you. With that in mind, here are a few tips to consider when finding a regiment.

What you need to join a regiment:

Firstly, let's cover the basics of what is required by almost every regiment in the community. It doesn't hurt to come prepared.

     - A copy of Mount and Blade: Warband and Napoleonic Wars - If you don't have this, you'll probably want to get one. It's necessary in every regiment. Ever.

     - Teamspeak 3 Client - Teamspeak is a Voice over Internet-Protocol program used to chat and give orders in the vast majority of regiments. Most regiments will require you to have this program for events, but will not require you to have a microphone. Bear in mind that not all regiments will use this, so check out what a regiment uses before you join.

     - Steam - While not exactly essential, steam is already used by most gamers, and really makes everything a lot handier in regiments.

    Knowing what you want:

This is something only you know. Everyone has different tastes, and with so many regiments out there you're certain to find one to fit yours. However, here are some basics to look out for if you're not sure what to choose.

    Time

Timezone is one of the very first things you should check out when looking for a regiment. It might be perfect in every other way, but a regiment where you can't attend the events probably won't do you much good, so make sure to choose one in a timezone that suits you.

Also check out the regiment's schedule. While you most likely won't be forced to be at every event, it's a good idea to make sure you'll be able to at least attend some of them.

    Style

I like to think of regiment styles in a similar way to political ideals. You have extremes on two sides - In this case relaxed and/or trollish(They don't necessarily go together) and professional/serious - and everything in between. Knowing what you want may not be all that easy, as regiments often aren't what you expect them to be. So be careful about your choice of regiment in this case. I'd always recommend going for somewhere in the middle for your first regiment, but of course it's entirely up to you.

    Faction

This is a slightly less important one, but it does help to narrow down your search a bit. The 5 factions in game each have plenty of regiments to choose from, so it's a good idea to choose one that you like and work from there.

    Unit

If you're new to regiments, I'd suggest going to a regiment/army that has a number of different types of unit, so you can give them a try and see what you enjoy. If you already know what unit you enjoy - look for them. Generally, there are a few different types of unit:
    • Line Infantry - By far the most common. Focus on a mix of shooting and melee. The staple of most linebattles. They tend to fire a few volleys before charging into the fray
    • Guard Infantry / Grenadiers - Heavily focused on melee. Tend to prefer a straight up charge to a drawn out firefight. This focus varies from unit to unit.
    • Light Infantry - Long range Shooters. Still capable of holding their own in melee but more focused on picking off enemies from a distance.
    • Skirmishers - Further again towards the shooting side. Generally use Rifles, making them weak in close combat and slow to fire but much better at hitting at range than any other unit.
    • Cavalry - Horsemen. They come in multiple types (Dragoons / Lancers / Hussars etc.) but all fill the same general purpose. Move fast, kill the priority enemies and get out if possible.
    • Artillery - Use cannons to hit from a massive range. Focus on taking out as many enemies as possible. Much more stationary than the other roles.
IMPORTANT! This is just a general overview! Not all regiments will conform to these descriptions of their class, make sure to check out what they do before you toss them aside! I.E. A lot of "Grenadier" regiments will play more like the description of Line Infantry.

    Size

Again, there are extremes on both sides of this, and everything between. You can have regiments with upwards of 70 members at every linebattle, and you can have regiments with 5. So think carefully about the advantages and disadvantages of the different sizes. A large regiment will be well established, have plenty of events - and lots of members. This may make it more difficult to integrate (although this is rare) and a lot more difficult to gain ranks. In a smaller regiment, it's the flip side. They may have a very welcoming group of people, and make sure you have plenty of chances to rise through the ranks, but they may not have the large scale battles of the larger regiments. Of course, there are plenty of regiments out there with a balance, so bear those in mind as well.

    Members and Nationality

Although you may think it's obvious, be sure that the regiment you're joining operates in a language that you're comfortable with. There are regiments with lots of nationalities out there.

Also bear in mind the existing members of a regiment - you may already know some, and they might influence your decision either for or against the regiment. A friend in a regiment can make it a hundred times better, but someone you dislike can spoil it just as fast.

So, good luck to you all in choosing your regiment. Remember, the game is here for you to enjoy it, so make sure you don't let a regiment ruin it! Have fun!

"I couldn`t hope for more skilled or honourable opponents!" - Colonel Cenkris

The Perthshire Line Infantry were raised in 1794 in the Lowlands of Perthshire by Thomas Graham (afterwards Lord Lynedoch), the hero of the brilliant victory of Barrossa in the Peninsular War. Their steady courage at Mandora in the “Abercromby” Expedition to Egypt was remarkable. The Battalion wore brass helmets, the only head-dress available on embarkation, and were bravely charged by the French horse, who mistook them for dismounted cavalry and were heavily defeated.

In 1854 the 90th proceeded to the Crimea, and were present throughout the assault of the Redan, where many fell, their bodies being afterwards found in the place which marked the farthest limit of the British advance. In the Indian Mutiny of 1857, the 90th added greatly to its reputation by the numerous acts of gallantry performed by its officers and men, and it was present at the relief of Lucknow.

In 1878 the 90th were employed in suppressing the Gaika Rebellion in the Cape Colony, and fought under the temporary command of Colonel Evelyn Wood, V.C., himself an Officer of the Regiment, and later Field-Marshal Sir Evelyn Wood, V.C., G.C.B., G.C.M.G.

In 1899 the Boer War broke out, and the 90th - now the 2nd Battalion of The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) - formed part of the Army under Sir Redvers Buller, which, after much exertion brought relief to their beseiged comrades at Ladysmith.

The 90th had the unique distinction of having produced three Field-Marshals and Commanders-in-Chief of our Army -Lords Hill and Wolseley, and Sir E. Wood, the third being in temporary command for a short time when Adjutant-General. (The appointment of Commander-in-Chief of the Army has now been abolished.)

It should also be mentioned that in the Boer War both militia battalions volunteered for active service and rendered much valuable aid. Nor were the Volunteer battalions of the regiment less zealous. The service-companies furnished by them joined the regiment, and shared the work and risks of their regular comrades
