If the United Kingdom earns a few more medals tomorrow then we'll have broken our medal tally record from the previous Olympics. No host nation has gone on to improve their medal haul in the next games since the modern Olympics began in 1896. Amazing for Great Britain. So many athletes have become household names and no doubt we'll be seeing quite a few of them on the honours list.

I've seen counties doing the same comparison (Yorkshire) and Universities too (Loughborough and Sheffield) as well as individuals (Michael Phelps). Just a bit of pride in what you see as the community around you. It's natural to want to see how different scales of athletes compare to whole countries (Phelps being 39th as a nation on all time Olympic medals earned for example).
Calling it desperate is a little melodramatic. The UK has voted already, they're not exactly appealing for remain votes. ::)

I think the not so subtle indication they're trying to make is that a federal EU would be top of the medal table and compete with the current global superpowers, China and the US.

Well that argument would definitely convince me! Who cares about financial stability, we need a Federal EU to beat China and the US in getting medals at an event which is held every 2 years, of which people only care about the one every 4 years! That's me sold!

Europe will never compete at a major tournament under the same banner. There are so many world class athletes under each countries banner especially the UK, Germany, France, Holland etc that a lot of the other, smaller countries would be unlikely to have someone chosen to represent their nation at the Olympics which seems pretty unfair considering a big factor of the games is national pride. The UK for example prides itself on it's athletes. Mo Farah, Jessica Ennis, Jason Kenny, Laura Trott, Murray, Froome, Wiggins etc are all household names and no doubt many of those mentioned above and more will be receiving honours from her majesty.
