The origins of the regiment can be traced back to 1626, when Elector George William of Brandenburg had a standing mercenary unit established during the Thirty Years' War. He formed it to defend the borders of the Margraviate of Brandenburg. The regiment was re-named as the 1st Grenadier Regiment after the Napoleonic Wars of Liberation on 14 October 1814 by order of King Frederick William III of Prussia and was named in honour of Tsar Alexander I of Russia, who was also its first colonel-in-chief. Many of it's members had been involved in the Siege of Kolberg in 1807, and most of it's officers had been awarded the Iron Cross and the Pour le Mérite. On the 18th of February 1820, the regiment was given the status of a gaurd regiment. The regiment served in many engagements through out it's history as a grenadier guard regiment. German Revolution of 1848/1849 The regiment had a key role in street fighting during the German Revolution of 1848/49. On April 23rd 1848, the regiment fought at Schleswig. In the fighting, the regiment was moving from building taking every inch they could. During the fighting, they lost three grenadiers and on lieutenant.The regiment also fought in Dresden, which earned them a monument to honour the dead and wounded they sustained in the street fighting. |  Flag of the regiments fourth battalion |
 An officer and grenadier circa. 1824 | Austro-Prussian War The regiment also took part in the Austro Prussian War in the year 1866. They did not have an important role however, only fighting at Soor, Hradec Kralove and Koniggratz. At Koniggratz they fought the Austrian Alexander Regiment, and captured their colours. During this campaign, they lost seven grenadiers, one sergeant and two lieutenants. Franco-Prussian War On August 18th 1870, the regiment saw it's first bit of action in the Franco-Prussian. It was at the Battle of Gravelotte that they fought for the first time. While in the conflict, they lost a total of 13 officers, two of which we're battalion commanders, and total of 830 enlisted men an NCO's. The regiment had an important role in the capture of Le Bourget on October 30th 1870. In this battle, they lost 239 enlisted men and NCO's, while only one officer, a lieutenant was injured. The regiment also fought in Sedan, Paris, Le Bourget and Drancy. First World War During the First World War, the regiment was part of the Second Gaurds Division. It fought mainly on the Western Front. It took part in many battles, most notable was the Battle of Marne, La Bassée, Battle of the Somme, Chemin des Dames, Arras and Flanders. |
