Hey guys,
I recieved your requests and messages, but I am really busy with some bad real-life stuff.
So I did not want to ignore your requests or upset you.
I do like the idea to make a new patch and like Kanade said, we have a patch "ready" since 2016, but we never finished it or combined all made parts (I even have a nearly complate Alamo mod ready since early 2017 with Texans, Mexicans, Native Americans and such).
I don't know how much time it would need, to add the new source code parts and features into the chaotic NaS source code, since its based on the source code of the very first release version of NW.
I will get in touch with Kanade and Parrot, maybe there could be a final version of North and South soon or later this year. But I don't know, how much stuff I am able to bring into this patch, due to real-life and War of Rights.

The only difference to the 79th NY is: The 78th NY never used any scottish uniform parts
They always fought in regular federal uniforms.Their nickname was just Highlanders. Same for the various regiments called "Coldstream Guards" and so on.

I haven't seen a game that can include 200 player servers, melee, and mixed arms (cav, skirms, inf and arty) like NW. There have been a ton of heirs but most of them are limited by their engine (which Unity and CryEngine aren't neccesarily built for it).
Honestly... I think the true heir is going to come from modding Bannerlord. We shall see.
