Title: Let's discuss: Buying things!
Post by: kpetschulat on August 14, 2014, 01:42:34 pm
Since Overlord Vince is fascist and doesn't like to have fun, I'm opening a new thread for us to discuss buying things for our reenacting impressions. Here, we discuss purchases and items we have on our "wishlists" only!

I got my personal items from ostfront militaria. Love that seller now. Will be watching him closely for any awesome items.

- DRK handtowel - some nurse found me sexy and gave it to me, she claim it was because I had blood coming all over my face but i know shes lying to cover the fact that im sexy for her.

- Peppermint tin - probably fill it with altoids

- 1941 dated calender-notebook-guides

also

- M43 tunic, i took a risk to order a size 46 as I noticed size 48 tunic i currently own is bit baggy on me. turns out fucking thing fit me like glove. One month of PT paid off. Going for 44!

Shit, all the Fritzes are losing weight, might try doing Soviet rations for a month and see how much weight I lose and how deficient I become in every important chemical and vitamin.

I'm going the other way. I've gained enough muscle on my sword arm for my arms to be noticeably different in a t-shirt.

More incentive to start training with either hand when I get my own sword (totally on topic) so people don't think I'm the keenest wanker in the world.

Speaking of my sword, work will probably start on it in a week or two, then it might be a few more weeks before I get it. Will keep y'all posted on that, since it's being custom made.

Title: Re: Let's discuss: Buying things!
Post by: Olafson on August 15, 2014, 09:37:24 am
French 1916.

I have a full list of equipment to buy, and where to buy it, but it is expensive... About 1910$ For the basic equipment. + 600 for the rifle (which I own already, though)

And there are so few people making french WW1 stuff, it is unbelievable.

Oh, what the fuck... I just checked the list again, and the store that had most of the french stuff somehow got rid of it. Whaat...
Where am I supposed to get it from now? It had the most important stuff... Greatcoat, trousers, leather belts...

Meh, I will mail them and see what theyre up to. Maybe they still take special requests.

I know there are people who hand make these kinds of uniforms, but it is absurdly expensive since it's not cheap Chinese crap. You may need to get your leathers and wools handmade.

Term we medieval people use for regular clothing, as opposed to our combat kit.
e.g. My soft kit's comprised of tunic, shirts, braies and hose, my combat kit is an arming cap, secret helmet and a loaner gambeson.

So I guess George basically just means his tunic and trousers and stuff.

Went up to Spetchley Park event today in my civvies to buy some stuff, found this pretty damn good sutler who have a site, bought a stainless steel canteen from them, they mainly do US Civil War stuff but do some Napoleonic stuff to, including some nice shoes!

Check em out

http://www.civilwarsutler.co.uk/

Also bought 3 Osprey books, Napoleon's Guard Infantry (1), Napoleon's Marshals and Napoleon's Cuirassiers and Carabiners.

Quite a decent French turnout there, shame 21e isn't going I think cos its a pretty nice event with a shit ton of sutlers and stalls, there is a big ACW turnout too.

Saw Barnsey in the Civil War Sutler tent, in his straw hat, didn't say hello heh heh xD
Highlight of the battle was seeing Duncan Miles, leader of the French, beat the hell out of the 95th Officer, all acted of course.

It is weird, and a bit boring, to be merely a spectator instead of actually doing it, stull, glad I went, got some nice stuff out of it.

My front seam fixed bale arrived today. Got it for a great price on ebay.

Currently working on my USMC kit that will span from Guadalcanal to Korean war.  I currently portray E/2/2 Marine and in process of joining the group. I have to own a proper M1 Garand before doing any event, this will take some saving as they're 1k easily nowaday.  :o

I think I might still have some German 1942-44 Schoolbooks here.
I know one for sure.

I am also wondering if my Grandfather still has some stuff from the Wehrmacht, like IDs or something, or if he threw it all away. He doesn't want to talk about the war, at least that's what my father told me, and I really do not want to try it. So it is highly likely that he just got rid of all this stuff. It would be interesting to know though, cause he went to all the bad stuff in the eastern front and was part of it from the first day of the war.

He did not loose a single tear when his wife died a few years ago (After over 40 years of being married), but when his friend died, he was really depressed for about a week. (Which is a lot for him)
His friend was with him in the east, so there must be some stuff that has happened there.

My neighbour is 87 and was a survivor of a bombing raid on my town in '44. The allies were aiming to destroy a small arms factory but accidentally hit a residential zone.

She came across the headphones of an English bomber pilot who crashed down here after the raid. She gave it to me, because she knew I liked history and wanted to give it a better home than dusting away in her basement.

My great Grandfather was in the Kriegsmarine, u-boat crewman. He kept his mouth tight about the war, just shed some few confusing details like how he ran away in french man clothing to see my grandmother's birth. Then returned to Omaha to find the Allied troops bustin' Rommel ass. Ta-da war is over for him.  Strange details though, what a KM man is doing in Omaha and he missed all the retreating troops before getting back to Omaha? (i was like 11 or 12 when i was told, probably thinks im too young or something, ofc i said wow amazing cool!!")

After he passed away, my Grandmother started to find out some more info about him. We still not sure about the Omaha story but we do know he is a u-boat crewman and sole survivor of the crew. Something went down and scared him for life. :c

My grandfather was an air traffic controller for the U.S. Air Force at the airport in Chico, CA. He wanted to be a pilot, but his eyes weren't good enough. He was really bummed about being slated for the war. My grandmother (his wife) worked at Lockheed and traced blueprints for the P-38 lightning.

My granduncle was with the 1st Cavalry, but by the time he got to his unit the war had just ended and the 1st Cav was stationed in Tokyo. This is where he did occupation duty. Another granduncle was on ship with the U.S. Navy, but a smaller vessel. He also came in late in the war, but he did witness the kamikaze attacks focused on the larger ships in the fleet he was in. I forget what his job was.

What are you going to use? I recommend shoe-whitener, the same stuff you would use to make, for example, tennis shoes, white. Works perfectly.

For my giberne belt I use shoe whitener from a company called "Kiwi" but its kinda meh with my belt, whitens it but misses bits, its applied by a sponge brush thing on the top. I should ask my Sgt Major what he uses to whiten his stuff cos his belts are pristine.

You don't HAVE to whiten your belts though.
I just apply some beewax to them, so they don't dry out or break/rip, but keep their nice brownish/white color.

I use dubbin on my boots to waterproof them and revive the leather.
Waterproofing is a must for me at least, dunno about the leathers you use, but our stuff grows a lot of mould if they get wet and aren't dried sharpish.

I disagree. Belts were whitened so you should at least whiten them once to get the proper 'campaign' look.

We / Vince just bought 2 Original Enfields.

He is going back to that guy next days to buy more. He has a ton of original guns that he wants to sell. He also has some original flintlocks which I wouldn't mind to get. It is always good to fill depot up with something that looks nice and works.

I own a ATF one, was highly recommended by my unit. It is very nice, also Landrik did recommend M42 on hessen to me back then. I just went with ATF one because a bud was selling his away. But yeah, both looks good. I also heard Kelley's has some nice gavin greatcoats.

Their all originals.

Sure they need some work, but im pretty sure half of them at least are good shooters.

95 Euro on average, per gun.
Title: Re: Let's discuss: Buying things!
Post by: Ililsa on August 28, 2014, 08:43:13 pm
Is that half that will work without replacement parts? If so, that sounds like an insanely good deal.

I've just sent off the payment to the swordsmith who'll be making my sword, £305 in total or $506 or £384 Euros.
For that price I'm hoping it's nigh on indestructible if I look after it.
Title: Re: Let's discuss: Buying things!

All but for one work. For that one lock that is broken we either replace it with a new spring or we keep it in depot only.

In terms of rust, it looks like most of the guns can be de-rusted without problem, maybe one or two barrels rusted too much. I guess that in the end there will be at least 5 guns that we can shoot.

Who the fuck need silencers?

And keeps them hoodrats from bringing SAW on the block which i am perfectly fine with it.

Now if you would exsuce me, I'm going to clean my 1861 Springfield which was a reproduction and I didnt need ANY paperwork for it as I wait for a simple piece of ID to own a M1 Garand and K98 and many others glorious rifles.

It is a magic place compared to the wonderful European Islamic Union.
Title: Re: Let's discuss: Buying things!
Post by: Olafson on September 02, 2014, 09:34:07 am
I dont need any paperwork either to buy and own Springfield reproductions or anything designed before 1871. So what?
I could even buy a Krupp Gun from 1860 and I wouldn't have to fill in any paperwork.

Just stuff from after 1871 is forbidden. Or rather harder to get, you need some paperwork for that and take a weapon course. Still, since that MG42 is demilled, I could buy it without any paperwork too.

Were increasing our Kits for Napoleonic Reenactment. We just purchased 2 Original Charleville 1777 Flintlock muskets, a new cartridge box sling and a greatcoat.
Additionally, we purchased a shako, a new pair of trousers, a new shirt, a new canteen, a new breadbag and one new mug.

In Eindhoven next week I will also buy a new cartridge box and, if it fits, a new gilet vest.

Hurray for spending way to much money on this stuff!

They are in perfect condition. And no, people in Europe do that everywhere. In fact, Dutch law makes it easier to use an original firearm than a repro.

Weapons still need to be fireproofed. You are not allowed to shoot it without the necessary licenses and stamps on the barrel.

Gathering depot gear for the 85e?

Well yeah, but not officially. More like depo gear for ourselfs :P So we can invite people to join us for an event.
That being said, I dont think the 85e dislikes the idea of finally having more muskets.

I will send some pics once they arrived. We got a good offer on an French Website. 800 for both. I.e. 400 each.
It is one full length 1777 and one short version, probably for dragoons. Either way, they look good, are original and now we finally have enough firearms for everyone.

Is that where our donations to BCoF go Olaf? Financing your kit? :P

No. The Paypal money is going into the game/company. Only that.

That is what is currenlty on there. Remember that this is not donation money. This is money that we transferred from our Company Bank account. We spent all the Donation money already. On models, sounds, music, licenses etc. The money on our Company Bank account is completely our own money. Money that we invested from our personal funds.

So far we spend all the PayPal money and at least 10k Euro per person into the company. Addionally, some of us have spend more money on the company. I for example spend an additional 7000 on it.

So don't even ask. We are not spending a single cent of donation money on something that is not related to the company/game. In fact we spend thousands of Euros out of our personal accounts, to get the game going.

Nice pick up right there. Thing is with the pouches and tornister is you've got to baby them... no need to fuck up original shit. I use an original '42 dated Tornister that doesn't have the fur or the straps (it attaches to Y-straps) that I use as a pillow and to carry the shit I don't use right away in my pockets or breadbag.

Original pouches are great for guard duty, living history, etc.

Mountain boots are expensive as FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK. Someone's going to be very happy with those.

I use original mismatched pouch. Rockford got 'em dirty. Naturally I cleaned them first before anything from my kit.

You asked for it, here you go.
Vince, my brother and I spent all day fixing these 2 things. The images I posted are not the fixed/cleaned ones though. These were taken before we started cleaning.

The long gun will defiantly work, the lock is very strong and it sparks very well. If the barrel doesn't blow up when shooting it, it will be a great gun.
The small one is good too, but we need to replace one barrel band and the lock is broken. The hammer is to close to he pan and doesn't have enough energy to let it spark. Addionally, it can be fired from half cock, which is not very safe.

Pretty.

They're not that hard to get, I've seen some fare for $40 to $100.   75 euros is nice but gotta think about USD and shipping, best to look into american based antique shop or ebay, it'll fare cheaper.  Good deal for WW2 guys in Europe however.

Swag, mane. This is something from the "Schlacht im Hürtgenwald" event folk who were talking about possibly doing something interesting for the February event:
Spoiler
For 2015 would german participants be interested in a resupply scenario? It would involve a pre-purchase from ATF and/or Panther Store for items and those items would be boxed and brought forward for resupply by type. Those who pre-purchased the items would then retrieve their items by type. Clothing, gear, etc. Just an idea, let me know your thoughts.

Items to be distributed:

Winter Parka sets (Panther Store)
Camouflage smocks (panther store)
Tunics/ trousers (ATF)
Leather/ webbing goods (ATF)
Bread bags (ATF)
Socks
Sweaters
gloves
toques
cold weather gear in general
Helmet nets

So the concept is this- people will pay for their items from these places in advance and we will have their items tagged w/ their name from the Mfg. There will be one shipment to Phil's place and it should be there 10 days or more before the event.
[close]

By the way, did you want to get the 275 on that event? It's pretty fuckin' legit. It's the one down in Waverly. The one I've told you about before.

For the WWII German reenactors:

Where's the best place to get WWII German medical equipment, gear, uniform accessories, armbands, etc.? An underage recruit in the unit I am in would like to be a Sani until he can wield a rifle legally at events or until he can get one. Research is for him, but I'm helping out.

It's not silly in my opinion. It's only silly because it happen to be only ACW event in Netherlands. I do understand vince's fustration but to be fair, We also have those union or confed only event to perform drilling and such. You guys can simply drive over to Germany to do that union only drill weekend or create your own event in NL. In fact that probably is the best idea, now the only acw event expanded to two events in NL and someday you never know that group will actually notice you guys as dedicated reenactors, and wish to do a battle. Ta-da you have 3 events in NL. ACW grows. Happy day for everyone except dedicated Napoleonic fanatic who believe ACW is degenerate time of war.  ;D ;D

Yes, ofc. Drillcamps make sense, but as you said, it is a bit silly because it is pretty much the only event happening. There were a couple of union guys who wanted to go there and do some drill on their own, but the Confed guys got angry for some reason. Apparently they did not want to see any Union guys around.

Just ordered my 1812 habit. Lets hope they deliver in time.

I also got a good deal (atleast I think so) on an Armi Sports Springfield replica.
400 Euro. Does anyone of you civil war guys know if that is a good deal or not?

btw does anyone know how much a French fusilier would be paid in, say a week? Mainly between 1812 and 1815, course what with everything that went on I expect wages changed etc, but any info would be useful!

If I remember correctly, pay was 0,30 francs a day in 1807. I lost the documents by which I can back that up, though.

They Pay was slightly higher in 1812. They dropped delivery of white bread and instead added the price of it to the salary.

140,- without plume or cocarde, it's from Horst Schmittner (http://www.historische-marketenderei.com/) and it's for my Batavian Marines 1797 impression. You know, our original impression before we started focussing on the 1810 impression for Waterloo next year.

Another reason why it looks different, we recently found material showing our original bicornes are incorrect. You know the Dutch MP Bicornes? Imagine a slightly smaller version of that one and you have the bicornes that the Batavian marines used. So you could say, the one I ordered is going to be more correct than the ones we use right now.

I joined at the perfect time.
Title: Re: Let's discuss: Buying things!

Not surprised. Your new model looks a lot more like the ones Suhr showed being worn by Batavian soldiers.
Title: Re: Let's discuss: Buying things!
Post by: joer5835 on November 06, 2014, 08:41:17 pm
Yeah, the main problem with our impression (both the 1797 and 1810 version) is that there's very little material of what our uniforms looked like.

After a long shopping hiatus (Girls or Reenacting, make your choice),  I've finally came into extra dosh to allow me live with both.

Here is my plan for my next purchase.

- BAR Cartridge Belt (Orig or Repro from ATF)
- M43 Entrenchment
- 1943 First aid pouch with Carlise tin
- M37 Wool trouser
- restore my fuggin front seam fixed bale M1 Helmet.

Yep, this nazi is going Murican BAR gunner for this event in May, a 1945 event.  We gonna bust the krauts and bring down some serious liberation in Germany. There will be refugees roaming the streets and volksturm hobbling along. And finally, stream of German troops surrendering to avoid Russian Capture.

We'll end it off with meeting up the Soviets, shake some hands and dance around.

Anyone interested to do this event, its in Elkhart, Ind hosted by Love Company, 1st ID and 275. Infanterie. Contact me. It's going to be enforced strictly for authenticity but all impression are welcome for display.

In case you are wondering, two weeks ago, Vince and I have bought almost ALL of the  WW1 French Infantry Kit.
All we are currently missing are historically accurate soap, a handkerchief, a bandage, historical underpants and two brushes.

But instead of that we got squad entrenching tools for 4 persons, and cooking tools for 3.

Besides that, I cant even remember all the other stuff we bought. Dozens of bayonets, plates, pans, forks, clothing etc.

So, I'm getting an A-frame and a-frame bag, including a sexy can of scho-ka-kola from a unit member this week. On top of that, at GAP, I'll be getting ANOTHER new tunic )to accomodate for my weight loss as my current one is too big by like 6 inches), a repro tornister M1895 pack with some equipment straps, and a beautiful palm forest light variant helmet cover... I'm spending bug bucks again for big items. I feel like at GAP I don't really want to wear my smock or anything, so I'm hoping to find a set of Dot-44 camo tunic and trousers. Probably going to be spending about $500 between now and GAP. Any of you guys going, and would like to meet up and chat? I plan on arriving Thursday night the earliest, and Friday late morning the latest.

I'm sure it's been posted before but furniture can be made depending on the style and skill with woodworking tools (I have made many a bench and chest from scrap lumber), and always check Goodwills/Thrift Stores/Pawn Shops and most definitely Garage sales for any clothes, shoes, knicknacks, haversack stuffers or unique item.

Also, a lot of these things pricey items like soaps, tobacco pipes, waterproof tar cloth, and etc. where sutlers and merchants have the markets cornered can be made at home in large batches!

Nothing looks better than a "home-made" look than a foreign copy. If you can help it ofcourse.

First of all... It's Totenkopf, even though the name "totenkopf" is translated to "death head," it's not the right term for it. Secondly, the Totenkopf was a symbol used by the entirety of the SS, however made infamous by the 3rd SS Panzer Division which was originally that SS-TV, Totenkopfverbaende (camp guards). It was widely used in the SS as a symbol of fear and power. The Totenkopf originally was from the 1700's and was a symbol of the Brunswick troops for decades, it then transferred into Imperial Prussian use as a symbol of the first and second light horse guard squadrons, both know as the Totenkopf Husaren... The Totenkopf was also used in WW1 with Stosstruppen/Sturmtruppen, and was then ressurected with the formation of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd SS standarten in the 1930's before the transfer from SS-VT into the Waffen-SS.

no, it was used by the prussians (Totenkopf Husaren) a long time before the black brunswickers in the napoleonic wars used it
and squadrons is the wrong term

Death head is not the wrong word...
Sure, it is supposed to be "death's head", but I don't believe that you are bitching on that little thing...

Directly translation is "Skull" or "death's head"... And that is what it is and represents... So yes, it is the right term.

looked some shit up

Pretty good civil war scene and wild west reenactments. The biggest ACW group is the 1st Virginia Infantry but in their description they make a big deal out of judging character via adhering to Christian principles so doesn't sound like a place for me.

if you are going to buy muskets in the Napoleonic, good ones cost around £500. if you don't make any of the kit and just buy good quality, that could amount to £350+
rough estimates, sorry if i'm wrong QQ
Title: Re: Let's discuss: Buying things!
Post by: joer5835 on March 03, 2015, 09:17:12 pm
Your estimates for Napoleonic are quite low.

Yes, you  can get muskets for 500 but they are kinda rubbish quality, good ones are around 800-1200. Uniform for just 350 without making anything? Hell no. My shako cost me 150, my coat 180 and another 200 for trousers, a shirt and a waistcoat. And then you still need all the extra stuff, such as a cartridge pouch, a bayonet, fatigue cap and a backpack, to name a few.

Not trying to scare anyone off, but you need to have a good idea of what prices you are going to pay if you want to do Napoleonic reenactment.

Vietnam reenacting another thing you could do, cheap as well since all the stuff you can find is at the surplus shop, i recommend it if you enjoy killing charlies. 10/10.

It just looks so off and feels like it could fall apart any day. But then, again it is only 8 months old and it feels like wasting money replacing it that quickly. So, should I?

I know nothing about the Medieval ages, and I dont really care what time exactly, but can any of you medieval guys post a full set of equipment that you would typcially wear on your body, here?
Not anything fancy, just normal stuff. No plate armour or anything fancy like that.

I am quite interested to see what you would have worn back then...

I have become Europoor and cannot buy things :(

no more government money, still in full time education so can't get a job

Will be getting a heater shield soon though, looking at getting a maille hauberk this year, but it seems I'll have to go at least 3 shows without it.

For Olaf, this is me last year. Based on gear I'm probably a levvied soldier who owns either 100 shillings worth of land or 20 marks worth of cattle.

I want to buy a fencing gear.
Like gloves, fencing mask, shin protectors and stuff.
Then I want synthetic sabre, arming sword with buckler, and federschwert. All synthetic.
As time goes by I will buy a steel sabre.
Title: Re: Let's discuss: Buying things!
Post by: Ililsa on August 10, 2015, 05:13:13 pm
A synthetic feder sort of defeats the point of a feder. Just get a synthetic longsword and move onto a steel feder if you're with a group that trains with them.

On a reenactment topic: Some buys I made from traders at the 750th anniversary of Evesham, just for living history stuff. Sorry about potato quality, I took it in bad lighting.

Hey,

Does anyone of you know a good shop where you can get a Sabre Briquet with good quality? Most briquets I found are not 100% accurate or out of bad material.
Title: Re: Let's discuss: Buying things!
Post by: Olafson on November 08, 2015, 11:55:25 am
Most sabres are crappy india replicas, not meant to fight. They are too heavy, wrongly balanced and weak.
I think if you want to find a proper one, you need to buy an original sabre briquet.

Sucks, but I think that is your only real option.

http://egun.de/market/item.php?id=5660975

This one looks strange, I think its Prussian
http://egun.de/market/item.php?id=5662604

I am not sure, if this a full lenght sabre, or a infantry sabre. If it is Infantry, then obviously the early war Sabre Briquet
http://egun.de/market/item.php?id=5645664

This one is strange, looks like a sabre briquet, but I think its way to long to be one...
http://egun.de/market/item.php?id=5672569

Additionaly, take a look at naturabuy.fr in france.
They have plenty of sabres.

The brass work on replicas is also way too shiny and prone to corrosion. So if you can accept it's flaws, stick with replicas, got cash and want something really good and authentic? Get an original.

Awesome. Make sure to leave it uncocked though, don't ruin your spring.

And please don't let it rest on the ramrod. Pedersoli ramrods are horrible, their tip is very weak and breaks off very quickly. It just happened to Admirals gun, and on on mine, it is already slightly loose and wobbly (which is why I exchanged mine with a India ramrod).

That's pretty good looking for a second hand gun.

But take my advise, get a damn flashguard. It might not be historically accurate, but at least you won't be constantly burning other people's necks.

I'm actually looking for a new pair of working trousers. The pair that I currently have does fit, but only just and working trousers are supposed to be always a few sizes too large. Any suggestions?

Well the easiest way to fix this is buying a larger one. But thats risky so ill guess you just go to a shop and buy a new one there.

I do not see how this is related to Reenactment, buuuut anyway... The PC looks good, but with your specs, I would buy at least 700 Watt power supply. Also think about going for more Ram, 8GB is not that much nowadays.

He probably does considering he takes order from all EU ! If you need me to precise something to him in French, don't hesitate :)

Indeed, it's a song about a 1810 conscrit from Languedoc (a French region which was a country, with his own language the "Langue d'Oc" = language of Occitanie) here you are :

I have been interested in reenacting for a while. I have been to a few trainings with the 44th Regiment of Foot. Seems I have been adopted.

Only thing is, the prices of everything is quite high. Where would you start when it comes to buying things? I do already have my bread bag  ::)

Not really, it's a good price Olafson, where do you buy it ? The Manufactures de la Grande Armée you have some for 100 Euros.

Well, I paid only 20 for my current, sloppy ones. So I honestly didn't knoww hat to expect. So yeah, I'll say 100 and below is to be considered.
Title: Re: Let's discuss: Buying things!

You can get them here: http://www.schneiderei-stork.com/historische-uniformen/
They costed us 90 Euro. Keep in mind thought that we ordered 3 Habits, 3 Gilets and 3 Bonnets though, so the price might be a little bit higher for just a single bonnet. Not sure, you will have to ask. But they are really well done. They have the proper cut, thick wool and length.
