Regiments / 56th Essex Regiment of Foot [NA]{Recruiting}
« on: March 31, 2014, 09:52:02 pm »
The 56th is a Line regiment based in North America, we like to focus on discipline and becoming the best men and women possible. We don't discriminate at all. Additionally we use a rigid yet fair rank structure reflective of the British military of the period. Think this is the right Regiment for you? Apply down below or add the colonel on steam. https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198091901546
The 56th Regiment of Foot was raised on the 28th of December 1755 following heightening tensions with France under the colonelcy of one Lord Charles Manners as the 58th Regiment of foot before being renumbered a year later to the 56th.
Alas the 56th would not yet be destined for battle being sent to garrison duties in Scotland where it would remain for a further four years at which point it would see further garrison duties in the sunnier climates of Hilsea in the South of England.
Yet in 1762 the fortunes of the 56th changed for the better. Britain was now at war with Spain and sending an expeditionary force against Spanish holdings in the Caribbean,specifically Havana. Upon landing in Cuba, alongside four companies of the 1st Foot and a battalion of the 60th the regiment numbered a healthy Nine Hundred and Thirty three men, making up a full ten companies.
And so it was on the 30th of July that a storming party was organised to take the Harbour fortress of Moro. After a brief,yet violent,assault the fortress fell with 150 of the garrison being killed in the attack,400 taken prisoner and a further 200 dieing in an attempted escape in a flotilla of dinghy's.
The 56th for it's gallant action was bestowed it's first battle honour in the Seven Years War. Further on,the 13th of August,the city of Havana surrendered to George Keppel. During the expedition the 56th lost a dozen men with a further two dozen wounded.
In October of the following year the 56th finally departed the hot climate of Havana for Ireland where it would remain for a sad eight years.
The first battalion moved from Ireland to the Isle of Wight in January 1805, where it was brought to a full strength of a thousand men, and shortly thereafter embarked for Bombay, where it remained as a garrison for several years. In 1808, its strength was augmented to 1300 men. A force of 200 men were detached for service in the Indian Ocean in January 1809, successfully raiding the Île Bourbon in September, capturing a large amount of shipping at anchor.
During this time, in August 1809, the remaining companies of the battalion were shipped from Bombay to Madras at short notice and under great secrecy, in an attempt to make a show of force to avert a possible mutiny of the Indian regiments. This was successful, with any violence being averted, and the regiment received the thanks of the Governor in Council.
In 1810 a second expedition was mounted into the Indian Ocean, with a strong detachment of the first battalion as well as various other units, and the Île Bourbon was taken on 10 July. The same detachment then saw action at the capture of Mauritius in December, the last French territory remaining in the Indian Ocean.
A force of militia volunteers sent as recruits to the 56th arrived as a garrison in Goa in mid-1810. It joined the first battalion in 1811, and the Indian Ocean detachment returned later that year. To mark the regiment's services in India, it received a new pair of colours as a gift from the Honourable East India Company.
With the return of Napoleon to France in 1815, the battalion was again despatched to Mauritius to reinforce the garrison there against the possibility of a revolt by the French population, where it remained for many more years.

The 60th Regiment of Foot was originally named the King's Royal Rifle Corps. The royal rifles was an infantry regiment raised in North America as the Royal Americans made from colonists. Later the named changed from the King's Royal Rifle Corps to the 60th Regiment of Foot. This regiment served for more than 200 years throughout the British Empire.
