Did only the Germans have helmets (boiled leather, but even so) in 1914, did everyone else wear caps?
Everyone else wore their traditional caps and uniforms in 1914. The british uniforms were the same as in the second boer war and in the french counterpart, the uniforms had changed very little since the franco-prussian war of 1870.

You mean this type of uniform 
That's the outfit used in the colonial campaigns, I am talking about these:

Since the second boer war.  Being more specific, the British soldier went to war in August 1914, wearing the 1902 Pattern Service Dress tunic and trousers. This was a thick woolen tunic, dyed khaki.

And they were pretty well for NCOs and below, yes?
