Title: Best Dressed Regiment - of Civil War or Napoleonic Wars
Post by: Pinball Wizard on November 16, 2012, 02:22:58 am
My favorite regiment, my opinion of best dress are the Freikorp Calvary regiment, don't know the exact details, but head over to Meneloas's thread to find out some more.
Here's a picture, taken from Meneloas:

Haha, indeed one of the best dressed soldiers in this time. Note that the colours of the uniform were later taken over by the german national flag: black for the fabric, red as badge colour & gold for the brass knobs!

Yeah, I'm sure the Germans made their new flag based on uniforms from 150 years before.

The Frankfurt Parliament had declared the black-red-gold as the official colours of the German Confederation, with the red symbolized the Hanseatic League and the gold and black symbolizing Austria. These colours soon came to be regarded as the national colours of Germany during this brief period, and especially after their reintroduction during the Weimar period, they have become synonymous with liberalism in general.
correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't that was the assigning of the nation's colours?

The flag is older, it first appeared around 1830!
Quote
Uniforms of the Lützow Free Corps during the German liberation wars against French occupation under Napoleon also consisted of a combination of black, red and gold. The colours were later used on horizontal tri-colour flags by Lützow veterans and other democratic revolutionaries of the Hambacher Fest in 1832, and in the Revolutions of 1848. As a result, the German Confederation, which had continued the use of the eagle coat of arms in 1815, also adopted the tri-colour flag in 1848.
I think everyone is a bit right.

Well I believe this should be divided into 2 categories and then 2 sub categories - infantry or cavalry and then fashion or practicality.

Infantry-
*Fashion:
Imperial Dutch Grenadiers

I can't resist the comment that being the best dressed regiment in the US Civil War doesn't make much difference to your uniform. Being diplomatic, uniforms were very 'practical' in that war.

Napoleonic, my first would be the Marins de la Garde. However, McEwan took them. My second favorite are the 3e Grenadiers-a-Pied de la Garde Imperiale "Old Guard Grenadiers"
THe guy who painted these desveres kudos. Insane detail.

Now, as for American Civil War, my favorite would have to be the 33rd New Jersey Volunteers, 2nd Zouaves "Mindl's Zouaves."
The wore exquisite Americanized Zouave uniforms.

I love how those straps look really cool when put properly under the chin, but utterly ridiculous when just hanging in front of the face.

Yes, that's exactly it, Duuring.

No, actually it's because reeactments are filled with fat people and old men, and the uniforms look like 5th grade play outfits. That's mainly what I see in that picture, but I'm sure many reenactments are different, correct?
Title: Re: Best Dressed Regiment - of Civil War or Napoleonic Wars
Post by: Duuring on February 13, 2013, 07:17:11 pm
Well, the average age of re-enactors might be few years higher then historically accurate, and many sure would benefit from losing a few pounds(Especially that guy on the left)...but these guys look really good, in my eyes. How do you mean, 5th grade play outfits?
Title: Re: Best Dressed Regiment - of Civil War or Napoleonic Wars
Post by: Nipplestockings on February 13, 2013, 09:08:13 pm
Maybe they're just wearing cheaper quality uniforms, but the cotton looks to be of very, very bad quality, and they look way too clean. Almost like haloween costumes. Also, from what I've seen in reenectment videos, not many people actually seen to be very passionate, or even good at their roles. I see a lot of smiles, leisurely marching, reloading and firing, and just a general feeling that hardly anyone is taking the event serously.

Now, I know that often this is just a fun time with friends, but if I were paying in the upper hundreds or thousands for my gear, and if there were a group of spectators like there often are, then I might want to put some effort into my acting.
Title: Re: Best Dressed Regiment - of Civil War or Napoleonic Wars
Post by: Duuring on February 13, 2013, 11:02:28 pm
Well, they are simply regular people, not actors! They are doing it for their own fun - not to give out a good show.

Seriousness differs from regiment to regiment and from event to event. In the end, we are just re-enacting  ;)

Napoleonic, my first would be the Marins de la Garde. However, McEwan took them. My second favorite are the 3e Grenadiers-a-Pied de la Garde Imperiale "Old Guard Grenadiers"

I'm going to lump in the war of 1812 (seeing as it was a co-belligerent war with france against britain)

United States Light Dragoons during the War of 1812

This is a real man, the eurofags are great at making uniforms but the americans can wear those uniforms like fucking BEASTS! Plus the eurofags have a tendency to over do things. Look at this uniform, it's not overdone at all! He's got the swag helmet, hes got a buttoned shirt and pants. You don't got the fuckin shako with golden plates and feathers with embroidered straps with a layered shirts and vests, just with a whole bunch of shit they don't need. This man is serious, he doesn't take all that useless shit cuz he doesn't need it. Europeans, take notes...this is how americans win wars...

Actually the 43rd wore stovepipes at Waterloo (they missed the battle though), most light infantry did (although the re-enactment group for the 2/95th, who we sometimes fight alongside, have Belgics). Probably been mentioned, but the 28th had Stovepipes despite being a line regiment, they had the sphinx emblem affixed to the back.

Hard to decide the best, there is so many classy looking uniforms back then.

I must say Swedes had damn fine uniforms back then, the main color of the uniforms for infantry was either blue or grey. Finnish regiments commonly used grey (except Österbottens and some other which had same as Swedish ones). The hats make you look like a true gentleman.

Title: Re: Best Dressed Regiment - of Civil War or Napoleonic Wars
Post by: Duuring on January 22, 2016, 05:44:23 pm
Some hats did have straps, leather or metal, and some didn't. At the end of the period, most, if not all, did have them. But Napoleonic soldiers simply weren't really supposed to make sudden movements and charges didn't happen too frequently. Well, at least not frequently enough in order for the War Departments to make clothing more practical.

You must understand that uniforms were all about making men stand out, make them proud to wear it, and all that bla-bla. The men who designed the uniforms weren't the ones who wore them on campaign, and they had very little notion on the comfort of the regular men. One of the more famous items that choose practically above looks was the Pokalem  (http://www.brigade-napoleon.org/infantrie/21eme/pokalem.gif) which, due to it's rather silly look, was abolished within 2 years of its introduction.

One thing that is interesting is that a Dutch painter, who was also an officer in the Dutch Landstorm (militia) in 1813-14, painted National Guard troops in combat situation with their straps tied on their shako, instead of under their chin where they had actual use. It's possible he drawed them while standing guard and put them in a combat situation just for the painting, of course.

Straps were tied like this quite often as they sometimes were uncomfortable to wear.

I've worn shakos with those straps and it's not uncomfortable at all.

Besides, you'd think that you'd want to make sure you didn't lose or damage your shako (that you had to pay for).

And remember the fact that shakos fit so tightly around your head that there is no way it can come off that easy.

Well, that's because we get fitted shakos. Those men just got a standard size.

Which doesn't mean to much, because you can make it fit by just putting some cloth or so underneath it.

If they were manufactured to pattern, they should have a buckle at the back of the headband to adjust their fit.

A tad before the Napoleonic Wars but here are some units from the Revolutionary era:
La Légion noire de Mirabeau,(French Royalist):

And from the other side, the units of the French Army in Egypt. Apparently they adopted many different coloured uniforms later in the campaign (supply issues I assume).

What are those Revolutionary hats that the French wear, with the leopard print on them? They resemble a tarleton but I'm pretty sure they don't bear the same name.

They are refereed to as the 'Casque à Chenille' or literally 'Caterpillar Hat' (my apologies as my French is not very good). They are based off of the Tarleton but were introduced in 1791. I do not think they lasted much beyond the early years (I read somewhere about an entire regiment casting theirs into the Rhine and privately purchasing bicornes because they hated them so much).

I'd say the Bavarian and Polish Regiments fighting have some good looking uniforms.
