June 1st-30th

The GiG reforms itself as the Kingdom of Germany.

The United States of America begin supporting the Kingdom of Germany via military supplies!

The Kingdom of Spain declares war on the entire Paris Pact.
The Kingdom of Spain focuses on Light Machine Guns and Light Artillery.

Communist German naval presence in the Skaggerak has lessened!

The Kingdom of Denmark withdraws diplomatic support of the GiG!
The Kingdom of Denmark no longer recognizes the GiG!

The Kingdom of Germany receives Flamethrowers & Armored Vehicles from the Russian Empire.

A Swedish vessel has been sunk in the Baltic Sea by the Communist German navy!

German Civil War!

"Foreign Intervention!"

The German Civil War is spiraling out of control. Friend is foe, brother fights brother, and Germans are spilling their own blood as the nations of Europe circle above, waiting like vultures.

In West Pomerania, Communist Forces stormed into Freikorps held territory following 5 days of artillery barrages and naval shelling via the German Navy in the waters near West Pomerania. The casualties were immense, not for the intended military combatants though, instead the Germans made quite a mess of the civilian population... Nevertheless, the offensive that followed was huge, with Communist troops finding and attacking many Freikorps held positions deep in the territory. The Germans were quite surprised however. This was not the rabble that they expected to encounter. Following the formation of both the GiG and the Freikorps as true factions, many rushed to both to fight for their respective causes. Communists disillusioned by the brutality of the Communist factions, old nobility and military men who were not supportive of the current regime, even refugees and commoners who decided to flee the "Red Terror" have taken up arms or at least joined the efforts of the Freikorps. This is all not including those who first created the Freikorps, including the original bands of rebels. The situation was compounded by a new situation developing in the Communist German Army: Desertion. The German Army, following Communist takeover and reform, is slowly losing it's distinct "Prussianness". The previously harsh and oftentimes cruel discipline of the previous Army was replaced with a more lax, socialist approach. Opportunistic soldiers desert at the nearest chance, whether because they have become disillusioned with the Communist cause, have been captured or converted by other factions, or even simply escape back to their homes and families. Desertion is now a big problem within the German Army. A problem seen best in the recent action against the Freikorps. The offensive was spread out over the entire front, 2 provinces wide. Communist troops poured into the region, quickly taking hamlets and villages, though many proved to be of little use having been destroyed. The Freikorps put up major resistance, although being "rebels" they turned out to be quite organized, even more organized than the actual German Army at some engagements! Though the Freikorps were eventually forced into a fighting retreat, the Germans were unable to capitalize on it before the month was over. The offensive remains ongoing, and we shall see the exact extent of it as it progresses into the next month. The Communist forces took a whopping 77 thousand casualties, a significant amount attributed to desertion, soldiers going missing, and those who were captured by Freikorps forces. The Freikorps took roughly 80 thousand casualties, however how many of which were civilian and how many were military casualties is hard to tell.

Another interesting development occurred in the Freikorps front. Many captured troops and captured equipment, after close inspection, were found to be foreign made! (Or at the very least not German army issue.) What this means nobody knows for sure. Perhaps the Freikorps are being armed by someone?

Meanwhile in the west, the Communist forces have attained a great victory against the Kingdom of Germany, though the circumstances are controversial and involve the nearby Kingdom of Denmark! The Kingdom of Denmark, apparently not wanting to see their countrymen killed in what would appear to be a pointless defense, began to recall many of the troops of the foreign legion of Germany. Telegrams, letters and other means of communication poured into the city of Hamburg, warning of a large Communist German attack. The Danish contingent of the Anti-Communist troops were implored to retreat back to Denmark and save their lives. Leaflets dropped by zeppelin over the city further added to the doubts of the Danish volunteers. After tense discussion, the Danish contingent of the Anti-Communist Army lay down their arms and left the city, quickly retreating to Denmark. The Danish volunteers had abandoned the cause!

The situation grew worse for the German Royal faction, as the tell tale signs of a military offensive began to appear. Despite large numbers of defectors, deserters, refugees, and political dissidents all converging on Hamburg, the Kingdom of Germany found itself scrambling for troops everywhere and anywhere. Scores of deserters, militia, bands of students and workers, and even simple peasant farmers were armed and began hastily making defense works of the city. However, they were too late. Following the Danish retreat, the city was bombarded by German artillery for 2 days and 2 nights. Hundreds, if not thousands of civilians perished in the storm of shells. The attack soon followed, with Communist infantry storming the city, aided by newfangled armored vehicles and even prototype German tanks! Resistance was quickly crushed, and the defenders easily dispersed. The city and the region has fallen back into the hands of Communist Germany! The Communist forces took only 20 thousand casualties while the defenders of Hamburg took roughly 50 thousand casualties. How many of those were civilians is unclear.

The cabinet and "king" of Germany were not found however. Some say they escaped the city by boat, while others say they escaped on land. Others say that they escaped into the country side where they hide with conspirators or those sympathetic to their cause. The hunt continues.

Not all engagements are Communist victories however. On the Eastern Front, a series of Russian offensives shook the Communist front lines, threatening to crumple the entire front. In West Prussia, a huge artillery duel took place, killing men by the hundreds as a monsoon of shells fell upon the battlefield. For 15 days and 15 nights, Russian and German artillery battered each others' front lines, the poor sods on the ground helplessly awaiting the end of the artillery duel. Following 2 weeks of constant bombardment, the guns fell silent. Dead silent. Men from both sides felt a glimmer of hope arise. Why have the guns stopped? Is this it? A ceasefire must have been called. The war must be over!

The war, unfortunately, was not over. Merely the prelude to a massive offensive had ended. The Russians quickly composed themselves and launched a massive offensive and the entire front, pushing with great elan. Teams of Storm troopers made short work of the Communist defenses, blowing small gaps into the trench lines that were quickly exploited. Flamethrowers, now a common sight on the battlefields of Europe, burned men alive in their fortifications as the battle progressed. The Germans found themselves being overwhelmed at many points. However time was not on the side of the Russians, who were unable to capitalize on their gains by the month's end. A few kilometres were gained, at a very high cost. The Russian Army took 59 thousand casualties while the German Army took roughly 65 thousand casualties.

Further south, another Russian offensive was tearing apart the German front lines, also equally troubled by time constraints. Following yet another 15 day long artillery bombardment, the Russian Army rushed forward with great elan. Despite dirty mountain combat, the Russians managed to overwhelm the German frontline at many key points. Fortunately for the Germans, time was also not on the side of the Russians. The offensive was a minor success, with the Russians taking 89 thousand casualties and the Germans taking 119 thousand casualties, many from desertion or capture on both sides. All for a few kilometres of land.

A potentially disastrous diplomatic situation has occurred in the Baltic Sea. Following the movement of German ships from the Skaggerak to the Baltic Sea in preparation for the bombardment of West Pomerania, Communist Ships found themselves exceptionally close to the trade lanes of the Baltic Sea. Indeed, some minor but tense encounters between German ships and foreign trade vessels were reported. However, on May 9th a major incident occurred: a Swedish merchant ship travelling through the Baltic Sea was stopped by Communist ships. Following failure to comply with German orders to halt, the Swedish ship was noted to have increased speed and began fleeing. The German formation gave chase, and in an attempt to stop the fleeing vessel fired a warning shot over the deck of the Swedish vessel. What happened next remains a mystery. Some say orders were confused, or that it was the fault of overzealous sailors looking for a fight. Whatever the case might have been, the Swedish ship was struck by scattered and sporadic fire from German guns. Before the confusion could be cleared and the firing stopped, the Swedish ship, with a mighty roar, spectacularly blew up! An shell must have hit its mark dead on, as a small explosion was followed by the utter and total destruction of this poor merchant vessel. The circumstances remain unclear as to how this situation happened. One thing is clear though: this incident marks a great stain on already tense Swedish-German relations. With an increasing amount of Swedish naval activity in the region, this small event might be the catalyst for Sweden's entry into the German Civil War...

The final bit of news to come from the German Civil War comes from the Western coast of Germany. Despite the presence of a large number of German ships in the area, British ships continue to congregate and loiter in the region. A drastic increase in naval activity in the area has been noted by German intelligence. Whether this is just British intimidation or sign of a possible military intervention remains unknown.

The Red Wars

"The Great Patriotic War"

The Glorious People's Republic of France is experiencing tough times militarily. With 2 fronts and 2 wars with 2 powerful nations, the French Republic is in for quite a struggle.

In the Provence front, the French Red Army found itself being the defender against a major Spanish naval invasion on the French Mediterranean coast! Despite being surprised and outflanked, the French Army managed to repel the poorly organized, ill-equipped, and inexperienced Spanish Army. Through stalwart defense and smart tactical actions, the French held the coastline and managed to meet the Spanish invasion. The Spanish invasion was an utter failure, with the landing army being completely destroyed or repelled throughout the entire front. The Spanish Army took 101 thousand casualties while the French Army took 92 thousand casualties.

Following the repulsion of the Spanish, the French turned back and launched yet another offensive against the Italian Army. With major technological superiority, the French barely pushed back the huge Italian Army in Provence. Gas filled the battlefield as French storm troopers tore great holes in the Italian lines. The Italians, though numerically superior, were overwhelmed by the force of the French offensive and began to retreat, withdraw, or even rout at many points. The offensive was a French success, though a bloody one. Even with technological superiority the Italians that stood and fought put up a spirited defense against the French attackers. The French Red Army took 98 thousand casualties while the Italian Army took a staggering 142 thousand casualties! The majority, however, were the large sections of the Italian front line that routed or surrendered on masse. The French Army, furthermore, following both actions against the Spanish and the Italians, has been completely exhausted. Supplies run low, as so do men to replace the casualties and ammunition to launch further offensives. The French Army of the South is completely bloodied. They will not be offensive capable for a good chunk of time.

Meanwhile in the Pyrenees front, the Spanish continue their slow advance deeper into France. Another Spanish offensive followed, pushing the French defenders back as mountain combat proved extremely difficult. The advance was slow and gains few, for quite a cost. The Spanish took 60 thousand casualties while the French took 71 thousand casualties.

As the fronts begin to warm up, disastrous news falls upon the French. While they have succeeded in repelling 1 naval invasion, another naval invasion further down the coast has gone unopposed, with the Spanish attaining a beach head and already occupying minor coastal lands. Disaster for the French, great victory for the Spanish.

Anglo-Turkish War

"Jerusalem"

The Anglo-Turkish War has gone mostly quiet now. However it appears to be only the calm before the storm as armies across the theatre of war scrambles to and fro preparing for battle.

In the Levant, the Ottoman Turkish army rushing back towards undefended Jerusalem was met only with grave news: The British have occupied both the city and the region! The Turkish Army continues its march northward, however now less enthusiastically as it did before. The British have attained not only a great moral victory but also a great strategic one. Occupation of the key city offers the British a staging point for offensives all over the empire, whether they be into Arabia or into Ottoman held Egypt. Supplies and arms flow easily into British hands, while the Turkish supply lines have been snapped.

Further west, Turkish forces continue unopposed occupying British Egyptian land and turning it over to the Egyptian provisional government. Though still small and unorganized, the provisional government has been gaining more and more de facto control of Egyptian territory, with Ottoman help. The British Army of Egypt has yet to be seen.

Meanwhile in Arabia, the Ethiopian Army in Mecca continues to be under siege. Persian troops continue to advance southwards down the British held Arabian coastline. The balance of power in Arabia appears to be in favor of the Anglo-Persian alliance.

In the Middle East, the Anglo-Persian game of maneuvers has fallen into British favor. While the Persians busied themselves with the conquest of the large city of Islamabad, the British Indian Army has retaken large swathes of Indian frontier lands, including some Persian territory! Furthermore, with the Persian army being deep in the British Raj, the British Indian Army is in position to snap already extremely overextended Persian supply lines! The Persians are in a dangerous situation now. With no chance of rushing south to defend their supply lines and no logistical support going any deeper into the British Raj, the Persian Army appears to have put itself into a check mate.

Meanwhile, the previously firm resistance in Western Anatolia by the Turks has disappeared as the Turkish Army put forth to defend against the British in West Anatolia has apparently fled! They have perhaps withdrawn to a more defensible position, or perhaps it is just a ruse by the Turks. Nevertheless, the British now have no opposition in front of them in the western most front: it is time to go forth and prevail!

"Black Gold"

War has a way of changing things. The previously coal dominated industries of the world have begun to transform. Oil, both crude and refined, along with natural gas have begun to gain more and more strategic importance in the world, both economically and militarily. The advent of military war vehicles, mechanized logistics and industry along with the shift away from coal has turned oil into one of the most important resources currently available!

The demand for oil is rising. The war machines of Britain, Germany, and Russia, naming a few, demand more and more oil and natural gas. Fuel for engines and automobiles, aeroplanes, as well as newfangled "tanks" has increased the need to acquire, refine, and trade oil. Communist Germany may be hit hard by this new demand as well as Russia, as they lack the means of acquiring oil or the means to refine it, refinement being a very grueling and time consuming process. Britain and the United States of America look to be in the lead, with the United States of America finding the balance of power tip in their favor. Their large refineries, as well as massive stores and pools of oil and control of perhaps the world's largest shares of oil by rich oil barons (mainly the Rockefellers) sets the stage for America to take the lead in the world's quest for oil.

However, that does not mean no other nation can play in this new game. The balance of power shifts and weaves, with unlikely nations finding themselves key players in the resource game. The Kingdom of Romania, though also lacking the means of refinement, finds itself with a plentiful amount of oil and natural gas particularly in the regions recently occupied as well as in "Greater Romania". The Swedish Empire finds itself with large reserves of oil, particularly in the Norwegian waters of the North Sea. The British also find themselves with oil interests in the North Sea, as well as the possibilities of more oil to be found in areas of their empire previously unexplored for oil. Russia also has vast oil fields, however they remain underdeveloped and without the ability to truly refine on a large industrial scale. Other nations may have the capability of producing oil: much of the distant colonial possessions have not been explored for potential oil deposits. Nations like Persia also have significant stores of oil, while it is rumored that some regions of Arabia may have trace amounts of oil (however, many believe this rumor not to be true. Surely such a devoid wasteland cannot possibly have enough oil to justify the costs of drilling it.) Many other nations are rumored to have oil in their sovereign lands, these nations are just the tip of the iceberg.

This suddenly important resource has the potential to skyrocket nations to great wealth and prosperity, as well as victory and conquest. However, reward will only fall upon those willing to work and toil for it...

War in the East Indies!

"Intervention in the Indies"

The mysterious ships spotted around many of the islands of the East Indies have made themselves known: they are ships of the Portuguese Navy! Portuguese military forces have apparently begun full scale hostile activities in the East Indies, with help from the colonial forces of the Kingdom of Denmark! Portuguese Colonial troops have begun the long process of the conquest of the formerly Dutch East Indies, hopping to and fro islands via naval support and amphibious landing. Though organized opposition is slim, the islands annexed so far have been sparsely populated. Resistance may grow as they invade more populated islands...

Meanwhile on the island of New Guinea, Danish colonial troops have begun annexing swathes of territory and bringing the inhabitants under the crown of Denmark. They too encounter no organized opposition, however if they do not hurry the indigenous population may rise up against these "alien" invaders. They also appear to be in contact with the Portuguese, as Portuguese naval vessels apparently aid in the logistical support of the invasions. Progress is slow. However, progress is always slow in the beginning of invasions...

Unrest

"Victory or Peace"

Dire situations are forming in Italy, Austria, and the Balkans. The recent stagnation of both the wars and their respective economies has caused many people in these countries to start seriously questioning the war effort and their government. Indeed, recent inactivity in the war and the resulting economic strife have taken their toll on the previously enthusiastic war effort. More and more intellectuals begin discussing peace seriously, more workers begin to organize into cohesive strikes. Protests have begun in small scale, and morale on the front lines has begun deteriorating. All cry for the same objective: "Victory or Peace!" If progress is not made on the front lines or on the negotiating tables, the situation may spiral out of control for many.

Smaller scale events similar to those in Italy and the Balkan region are noted to be taking place in Russia, Britain, and the Ottoman Empire. The least affected is Britain, who still sees great fervor in their war efforts. Their propaganda machine works tirelessly to quell the outcry of the common people, however propaganda alone can only go so far. If these nations want to avoid potential civil unrest, progress must be made on the front lines or on the negotiating tables.

The High Council of the People of the UBSR is gladdened that peace was finally achieved in Germany. The Council would like to send the DDR a crate full of the finest Belgian chocolate.

Belgium urges Russia and Austria to make peace. Both are mighty nations, and needn't show their power by silly wars. Wars aren't games.

The Swedish Empire will send our ambassador to berlin to discuss this matter. However the scandinavian people do not take lightly to this sudden attack upon our vessels. We warn germany that if we are not on equal grounds we have no choice, but to find another reasonable solution to solve this matter.

Minor Immediate Events

House Hohenzollern

Following the fall of Hamburg and the formal capitulation of the GiG, full amnesty was granted to the former opposition members by the Communist faction. Many of the people involved in the organization and government of the GiG have come forward following their defeat. Many still remain at large or in hiding.

The head of the GiG and the presumptive Kaiser (or King depending who you ask) of Germany has indeed come forward and returned to Berlin following the amnesty agreement. With a small entourage, he arrived unceremoniously at the city and made his way to the governing center. While the formal government forces were indifferent to his return, many of the common rabble and people were not happy about the monarch's safe return. Mud, shit, and other rubbish were sporadically thrown at the ex-monarch and his entourage. However, the monarch managed to arrive safely at the communist center suffering only damage to his pride and coat.

What becomes of him next we shall see.

The Baltic Incident

Following the so-called "Baltic Incident", the Swedish Empire and the German Democratic Republic agreed on a mutual investigation into the affair. A small team of German investigators traveled by sea to the port city of Malmo to be anxiously met by a small team of Swedish investigators. The investigations began in earnest, with both sides digging through manifests and papers attempting to find potential evidence to explain the Incident.

The German investigators suddenly found themselves in the hands of the Swedish authorities, following significant progress into the investigations. The Swedish authorities reportedly arrested and jailed them, based on evidence that the German investigators were found "tampering with documents and obstruction of justice"! The Swedes accuse the Germans based on evidence that many of the ship manifests and documents were found to be edited, while the German investigators continuously plead their innocence.

Nobody knows what to make of this situation. Did the Germans really falsify evidence mid investigation? Or could it be a Swedish cover up? Many questions remain unanswered. The only thing certain is that, in the minds of the common people, relations are at a breaking point.

The government is outrageous and demands the release of the investigators.

The arrestment of these investigators is condemned. Sweden's actions are not tolerateable.

There is no reason for this action. Arresting investigators who are part of a diplomatic mission without reason is a harsh insult and breaking every international law.

The German Democratic Republic demands that the investigators are released immediatly. Refusing to do so will be seen as hostile action.

It is clear that Sweden is trying to cover something up. Why would a ship suddendly explode anyways? It seems clear that the Swedish "merchant" who was on his way to territory currently occupied by Freikorps was delivering ammunition and other explosives. Arresting diplomats without any reason and warning is breaking every national and international law Europe has.

Silencing the Opposition

The continent of Europe is disunited. Conflicting ideologies, fear mongering, war, destruction, and economic strife all tear at the very pillars of civilized society. If nations are to succeed, they must remain unified as a whole. Many nations already know this.

Certain nations, like the Swedish and Russian Empires, along with the Kingdom of Spain and Italy to name a few, have taken steps to reduce the disunity of their countries by outlawing or banning socialist and communist political parties, in some places also placing censorship on leftist media. These actions are seen by many as necessary steps to ensure the continued success of their countries, as well as moves to win the war on the home front against the communists before they can infect the population with their "barbaric" ideologies and ideals.

Some nations have taken more drastic steps in the fight against political dissent. The Kingdom of Denmark, perilously placed above the Communist Low Countries and Communist Germany, has enacted a new law banning any and all political dissent or disagreement with the state. Any political or ideological disagreement with the state, or even speech against the King and the current government is now seen as an act of treason, punishable by imprisonment or even death. This rise of particularly draconian practices correlates directly with the advent of Communist Germany, along with the many many diplomatic incidences that occurred between the two nations. Nationalism and hatred towards both Germans and Communists fuels much of the debate in favor of this new law.

So there you have it. Any and all political parties that disagree with the state's views have been outlawed by the Kingdom of Denmark. This law is indeed similar to many of the actions seen in other nations, however the scale and severity of the new law sets it apart greatly. Political parties not even remotely affiliated with socialist or communist ideas could be shut down for having differing political views. Labor unions, as well as peace activities and anti war parties, or even simply more liberal parties are now in danger of being silenced by the government. Supporters argue that it is for the best of Denmark, and that this move is only to protect her interests and her people, and that this move is only temporary! Perhaps they may be right. Perhaps, due to the great struggles of war, this silencing of the opposition could become the norm until the crises of Europe are resolved. Other nations may follow in the footsteps of Denmark, or even take it a step further. The consequences of this new law remain to be seen.
