97th Regiment of Foot "Queen's Own Germans"

A painting of the Battle of Alexandria. The 97th (then called the Minorca Regiment) distinguished itself during this battle.

What is the 97th Regiment of Foot?

The 97th Regiment of Foot is a casual, North American based Line Infantry regiment for Napoleonic Wars.

History

The 97th Regiment of Foot was founded in 1798 as the Minorca Regiment. They recruited German-speaking prisoners of war on Minorca that were previously in service to the Spanish. In 1801, three years after it's formation, the Minorca Regiment was deployed to Egypt.

During the Egypt Campaign, the Minorca Regiment fought with distinction in the Battle of Alexandria. French cavalry had nearly broken the British lines, but the Minorca Regiment advanced and helped beat back the cavalry with astonishing efficiency. During there advance, a rank and file member of the Regiment, Private Antoine Lutz, left his line to retrieve the colour of the 21er Demi-Brigade Legère (21st Light Regiment). He killed the officer holding the colour and took it. Two French dragoons charged at him, but he managed to escape to his own lines with the colours. In honor of his victory the British Army awarded him with £20 every year for the rest of his life, and a painting of him holding the colour was made.

Later in 1801 the Regiment was renamed to "The Queen's Own Germans" and in 1805 it was given a number, the 97th, making it the 97th (Queen's Own Germans) Regiment of Foot. In 1810 the Regiment lost its designation as a foreign corps since foreign members no longer made up the majority of the Regiment.

In 1808 the Regiment arrived in Portugal to fight in the Peninsular Campaign. They fought in the Battle of Vimeiro as well as the Battle of Talavera, the Battle of Busaco, the Battle of Albuera and the Second Seige of Badajoz. In 1811 the Regiment was dispatched to the West Indies where they did garrison duty. In 1814 the Regiment was dispatched to Upper Canada where they fought in some of the last engagements of the War of 1812.

In 1816 the Regiment was renumbered to the 96th. In 1818 the 96th was disbanded. However, in 1824, the Regiment was reformed again as the 96th Regiment of Foot. The Regiment served garrison duty across the Empire before guarding convict ships en-route to Australia until 1843. In 1843 the Regiment was deployed to New Zealand to reinforce the British Army in the region, as Anglo-Maori relations began to deteriorate. The 96th fought in numerous engagements with the Maori during the deployment. in 1854 the Regiment partook the in the Flagstaff War, fighting in many engagements during it. in 1849 they arrived in India where they did garrison duty. They remained in India until 1854, when they returned home to the UK briefly before moving to Gibraltar where they once again did garrison service.

The 96th spent a brief time in Canada in 1862 before returning shortly to the UK and then subsequently deploying to Africa in 1863. In 1868 the Regiment returned to India where they remained until 1873.

In 1881 due to the Childers Reforms, the 96th was merged with the 63rd to form the 2nd Battalion of the Manchester Regiment.

Make sure you aren't letting in more than 100 players due to lag.

I'm not at my PC right now so I can't fill out the application but be sure to save me a spot for when I am!

Can I request a Canadian Expeditionary Force reskin?
he asked for some pictures
The same as the British uniform, but with seven buttons on the tunic.  They'd have the patch of their battalion on the side, in this case I'll request the 10th battalion patch, which is in my avatar.
