Modelling miniatures
« on: June 02, 2013, 07:10:16 pm »
Hello community!,

Recently I've been thinking about doing some modelling of miniature napoleonic war figures. Being interested if there's anyone else out there that's been doing this, I'm trying to get some advice and tips to get stuff started.

After checking google I found some random websites that sell these kind of things but I'm just wondering if anyone has a website that ships in EU and where I can pay in euro's, and has a large ammount of products.

Some examples:

Thanks in advance!

awesome Idea for a thread! I have personally also just got into napoleonic modeling! I bought a company of 1/35 Prussian Infantrymen, I am just to scared to paint them cause I don't want to mess up. :P

How much did it cost you? Some of the stuff costs a lot like up to $60 bucks for some sets, money I don't have :-\

I also thought I might get into this after purchasing some 54mm models from a car boot sale and brought some more off Ebay for £3 so only cost me £4 overall.

The guys at the front are Timpo highland band which in my opinion are great models but the plastic is not great quality.

This guy is one I got second hand I suspect it is a 1980's Airfix and I think they are great, shame to get them new they are about £20 and you have to ship them American sellers.

These are a couple of good sites for getting napoleonic models:

These guys do both metal and plastic (also they are ex-games workshop staff, so their models are of high quality)
http://www.perry-miniatures.com/

These guys give you more bang for your buck, (each set gives you ~50 men and costs ~£20 per box, also their deals are pretty good) They're also the guys I decided to go with, it was close between these guys and ones above. They also specialize in 28mm, which are my personal favorites.
http://www.victrixlimited.com/

Both of these sites figures can be interchanged with each other because they are so similar.

Also if you are going to paint, glue etc, I would go for citadel paints, glue, brushes etc because they are of a very high quality and can be trusted:
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/home.jsp

They also give you a few guides on how to paint and glue (although for their own ranges of models(40k, warhammer fantasy, LOTR but you can easily apply them to napoleonics.

A few good (external) forum threads and youtube links as well:

They should all be taken with a pinch of salt as they might not be the best, but they helped me get better at painting and modelling (I am literally shite).

Presumably with this you'd actually be able to use the .obj files from NW - though possibly with some sculpting first.

Thanks, this helps me out a lot. I'll check out the websites tomorrow. Really eager to get started with this!

Edit:
Just something that came up in me now, how do I know which paint I need? I take the paint has colourcodes that go with codes I get with the models? Assume I have to order the models first and the paint afterwards then, right?

This site is sold for 15mm the best IMO http://www.oldglory15s.com/ They are wicked small tho easy to paint tho not much detail unless you are me... then alot and very small brushes!  ;)
