History

At the outbreak of the Napoleonic Wars Sweden, once a great power, was only a middling power in the game of European power politics. Sweden had a population of only 3.4 million, Finland and Swedish Pomerania included, and the economy was based on a weak agrarian sector. It would certainly have been in Sweden’s best interest to stay out of the huge conflagration engulfing the European continent in the years 1805 to 1815. That was not to be; Sweden was to fight no less than four wars during the era (excuding a short “phoney war” with England).  Even if the forces involved and the casualties suffered were small compared to the campaigns fought on the continent during those years.  For Sweden, those wars meant a considerable commitment in both money and manpower, and actually brought the country to the brink of destruction.

The first two wars, the farcical war against France in Swedish Pomeranian in 1805 - 1807 and the epic struggle against Russia and Denmark-Norway in 1808 - 1809, were fought solely due to the incompetence and pig-headed stupidity of King Gustavus Adolphus IV (1792 - 1809). Gustavus wisely kept Sweden out of the Revolutionary Wars and joined the armed neutrality with Denmark and Russia in 1800. But his mind changed after the arrest and execution of the duc d’Enghien in 1804.  The event led Gustavus to view Napoleon as nothing short of evil incarnate, as a man capable of any heinous act to topple the righteous rulers and nobles of the ancient regime.  After the d’Enghien Affair no such trifling matters as the political interests or actual resources of his country could stop Gustavus from fighting Napoleon.

Thus Sweden joined the 3rd Coalition and sent an army to Pomerania to serve the allied cause. This led to the first campaign the Swedish army was to fight during the Napoleonic Wars, fought in Pomerania from 1805 to 1807. During the war, Gustavus managed to botch just about every military and diplomatic move he made. Sweden’s participation in the 3rd Coalition had no impact whatsoever on the campaigns fought on the continent during the same years. After the Treaty of Tilsit, the Swedish position in Pomerania became untenable and the province was evacuated and left for the French to occupy.

Since Gustavus still refused to come to terms with France, Napoleon prompted Russia and Denmark to declare war on Sweden in 1808. This coalition proved to be too much for Sweden’s meagre resources. Despite heroic efforts the war was lost. When peace was signed in September 1809, Finland – with a third of the country’s area and a fourth of its population - had to be handed over to the Russians, though Sweden did survive as a political entity. By then Gustavus, whose military incompetence only aggravated matters, did not rule Sweden anymore; in the spring of 1809 he was ousted from power by a military coup. The years 1808 and 1809 were nothing short of a national disaster for Sweden.

Gustavus was replaced on the throne by his frail, old uncle, Charles XIII (1809 - 1818). Charles was childless and after a somewhat strange turn of events the disgraced French Marshal Jean Baptist Bernadotte was adopted by him and made crown prince of Sweden in 1810. Soon Bernadotte was made generalissimo and became de facto ruler of Sweden, since Charles XIII’s mind was faillng due to old age. The political and military elite of Sweden hoped that Bernadotte would join Napoleon in the war against Russia to win Finland back. Wisely he instead chose to fight against his old master. Thus Sweden came to fight its third war of the Napoleonic Wars, against France, alongside Austria, Great Britain, Prussia and Russia in 1813 - 1814. During the war, the Swedish army marched from Pomerania to the Netherlands, but won little military glory due to Bernadotte’s unwillningness to risk his army in open battle; the lesson of Gustavus Adolphus IV, who lost his crown in a military coup after a disastrous war, was not lost to him.

For his services to the allied cause, Bernadotte demanded Norway. The little country, however, bravely refused to be incorporated into Sweden at the whim of the great powers. This led to a final war, when Sweden invaded and conquered Norway in a lightning campaign in 1814, easily defeating the outnumbered, but brave, Norwegians. Thus Bernadotte redeemed Sweden’s fortunes and made up for the loss of Finland, though not in they way originally hoped by those who helped him to power.[1]

This subject here is the organization and strength of the Swedish army during the Napoleonic Wars. This is an obscure subject, little known outside Sweden, not surprisingly considering Sweden’s marginal participation in the wars and the problem of language. While the ambition here is to be both accurate in detail and complete in scope, it must be understood that limitations of space, time and a lack of references on many subjects have meant that simplifications have been made and that some subjects only have been given a superficial treatment. Where the figures on unit strengths in the references used have been in conflict, the most authoritative reference has been used.

Regiments / ♛1a Svea Livgarde♛ (Champions of North America) [WIP]
« on: April 18, 2014, 09:21:39 am »

This Regiment fights for the King's Brigade

We are now the 1st North American Napoleonic League Champions!

Introduction

The 1a Svea Livgarde, a name change from the prestigious 14th Buckinghamshire Regiment of Foot, is a North American regiment first formed in October of 2013 from the 55e. Our founding principles were based off having fun yet maintaining strict discipline in line and in teamspeak. We value skill, personality and above all attitude, so we won't keep you if you act like a cunt for long.

History

Svea Livgarde as of 1811

Svea Livgarde was one of the world's oldest regiment still in existence, dating back to the year 1521 when the men of Dalarna chose 16 young men as body guards for Gustav Vasa. The Guards Battalion's Life Company is the world's oldest company. Since the year 1523 the section, now enlarged, has been known as the Royal Corps of Halberdiers and, under various names, the regiment has had its natural home at the Palace in Stockholm. The Halberdiers were transformed in 1619 into the Household Company which accompanied Gustavus Adolphus wherever he went in Europe. It was from this time too that the unit was classed as a regiment. In 1633 the company brought the king's body home from Lützen and thereafter formed the basis of Queen Christina's new guards regiment within the royal household.

The three following Carolean kings – Charles X, Charles XI, and Charles XII – required a government organization that was more mobile and the guards officers and soldiers accompanied them to the various battlefields under the name of His Royal Majesty's Guards. With the destruction of the palace in Stockholm by fire in 1697 the guards' natural responsibility for the defense of the capital disappeared. The new palace was completed in the 1750s and there was again a need for Life Guards and Household Troops for defending the capital.

During the period 1756–1810 – when there were constant palace coups and a large number of assassination conspiracies – the guards officers and the palace guard often played a decisive role. Gustav III tried to exploit this by appointing himself head of the regiment in 1774. The colonel was then given the title of second-in-command or deputy commander and this command hierarchy continued until 1980 when a number of constitutional changes brought it to an end. The Life Guards reckon 19 August 1772, as the proudest day in this period for it was then that Gustav III was able to break with corrupt governments. The most ignominious day is 20 June 1810 when the Marshal of the Realm, Axel von Fersen, was lynched during the funeral of the crown prince without the regiment intervening in spite of its being on duty.

The name was changed to the Svea Life Guards in 1792 and in 1802 the regiment moved to barracks at Fredrikshov. In the ensuing century the unit was used for various tasks. For example, the commander of the capital made use of the men and officers for keeping order in Stockholm. The regiment moved to barracks on Linnégatan in 1888. At the same time there were proposals to extend the training grounds on Ladugårdsgärde and at the beginning of the 1900s an artillery range was commissioned on Järvafält. The Svea Life Guards again moved their barracks in 1946, this time to Ulriksdal on the outskirts of Stockholm. At the end of the 1960s the Municipality of Stockholm wanted to build dwellings on Järva and the regiment was again under increasing pressure to move. In 1970 there was no longer room for the unit in central Stockholm and it was obliged to move men and equipment out to Kungsängen. A positive aspect of the move was that the regiment at last had access to training grounds and artillery ranges adjacent to the barracks.

You starting a new experimental regiment or want to get around to getting the proper uniform of your nations regiment in game but lack the skinning skill? Or you just want a new model for something?

Ask here in this thread and wait patiently for a NW modder to take interest in such a project. Please be as clear and precise to what you want and provide several images of the source (if possible from the sides and back too if you can). Once the project is done pleased edit out your request so any future modders can look for something else to do.

The completed product would most likely be released in the modders thread in Minor Mods as part of their selection or a seperate product. All completed projects must be linked there to keep clutter to a minimum.

Joining the 14th means that you will follow our rules and regulations.
1. We like to keep it simple, since this is a game. This means that there will be no tolerance of trolling, starting fights with other members and disrespecting officers and NCOs.

2. We like to have fun in the 14th, but we don’t take bullshit from our men. We value maturity over everything else, so we will treat you the same whether you are 12 or 22.

3. Being a part of any regiment requires that you be an active member of our community, so if you join and never show up, don’t be surprised when you are kicked from the group.

The regiment was raised by Sir Edward Hales in 1685 by order of King James II. One of the nine new regiments of foot, raised to meet the Monmouth Rebellion it was termed Hales's Regiment. The regiment served in Flanders between 1693 and 1696 and gained its first battle honour at Namur in 1695. In 1694 the regiment took precedence as the 14th Regiment of Foot. In 1715 the 14th was marched to Scotland to put down the Jacobite Rebellion. After a swift victory over the rebels the regiment did not see real action again until the 1760s, where it was moved to Boston in response to the Townshend Acts. It fought in Virginia during the American revolution and eventually withdrew to New York, until the surrender of British Forces in North America. In 1782 the 14th was renamed the 14th “Bedfordshire” and was soon after sent to the Low Country following the French invasion of the region, where it fought in the Battle of Flanders. The Bedfordshire earned its second battle honours in this tally, becoming the first regiment to ever receive its regimental march in battle. With the outbreak of the Napoleonic wars in 1803, the 14th was expanded into two battalions: The first fought in the Walcheren campaign, which was an invasion of Holland by the United Kingdom, which was a complete failure. The second battalion was stationed in India, where it did not see much action. In 1809 it was retitled the “Buckinghamshire” and a third brigade was added, where it fought bravely in the Battle of Waterloo. The 14th did not serve in any major battles with the exception of fighting the French in Mauritius in 1810 and the Dutch in Java in 1811.The 14th carries on as the West Yorkshire, Prince of Wales Own.
