The Mess Hall / United States or Britain?
« on: November 24, 2013, 09:16:17 am »
This topic is going to be about the colonization of North America, particularly the colonization of the area now apart of the USA.
A lot of people have some really strong opinions on this topic and I'd like to see them.
I would like to keep this a civil discussion.

I personally will side with my country, because even though some of the things that the colonists were getting mad over were ridiculous, they wanted freedom from an empire. The patriots felt being controlled by an empire across the ocean was absolute blasphemy.
Also, Americans have a trend of hating taxes, as seen today.  ::)

The Mess Hall / Romans or Britons?
« on: November 18, 2013, 11:04:58 pm »
This is another one of my versus threads, I did one not too long ago. (Normans vs Anglo-Saxons)

This one is hard for me because I have Breton blood, but that Breton blood is Romano-British.
So I guess I will side with the Romans.

The Mess Hall / Normans or Anglo-Saxons?
« on: November 14, 2013, 12:22:15 am »
I recently starting thinking about the Norman invasion of England and how it shaped English culture and language.
Who did you want to win?

I personally will side with my ancestors who were the Normans and some Bretons.
English wouldn't be what it is today without them.

(P.S I am learning Old English and I do notice some things that I do like more about Old English than Modern English.)

Off Topic / Where did your English ancestors come from?
« on: November 11, 2013, 03:10:27 am »
I know there is a large amount of people that are English or have English ancestry.
English people have a rather interesting mix of Celt,Germanic,Roman, and Norman.

I was wondering if anyone knew anything about how their ancestors go to England.

My ancestors came to England in 1066. My ancestor was at the Battle of Hastings, he was of Norman-Breton descent.

The Mess Hall / War jokes (Read thread)
« on: November 09, 2013, 09:58:56 pm »
The title suggests I'm making fun of war, but I am not. I wanted to know about any WWII or WWI jokes. I know there are thousands out there, mostly about the French,Italians, and Polish  :P

Here are 3:

A Pole was asked if he had to shoot a German and a Russian, whom would he shoot first, The reply: 'Naturally the German!' *Why?' 'Bo najpierw obowiązek, potem przyjemność! (Because duty comes first, then pleasure!).

The German army HQ receives news that Mussolini’s Italy has joined the war.
“We’ll have to put up 10 divisions to counter him!” says one general.
“No, he’s on our side,” says another.
“Oh, in that case we’ll need 20 divisions."

As it became clear that Germany was losing the war and Allied bombing started wiping out German cities, the country turned to bitter sarcasm:
“What will you do after the war?"
"I’ll finally go on a holiday and will take a trip round Greater Germany!”
“And what will you do in the afternoon?”

The Mess Hall / The Heathen Thread
« on: October 30, 2013, 11:56:23 pm »
Come brothers and sisters, have a seat and tell us of the exploits of you and your ancestors.

I saw there was a nonbeliever thread and I thought to myself "Why don't I create a heathen thread for all heathens?"

Whether you practice Norse,Celtic,Slavic, etc religions, you are welcome here!
I would like to keep this thread somewhat civil but I do not care about arguments, as long as they don't get into insults.

I know minuscule amounts of Old English. It's a fairly interesting language, I like it.
My ancestors didn't speak this language because they were the invading forces at the Battle of Hastings.
Later down the blood line my Norman/Breton blood got overran by Anglo-Saxon blood xD Damn Saxons!  ::)

Although I absolutely love my country, If I couldn't live here in the US, I'd live in England.
England is the home of my ancestors and I love the atmosphere, plus Americans and the English share a common language.
