Heroes of the Napoleonic Wars

Tell me about your favorite soldier/warrior of the Napoleonic era.

Here are some interesting facts about József Simonyi a legendary hussar officer

On January 24, 1815, he was awarded the "Pour la vertu militaire" by the Elector of Hesse.

He was awarded the "Pour le Mérite" by the King of Prussia on May 2, 1816.

He received a total of 72 awards during his military service.

Commander of the Imperial Order of Leopold,

Knight of the Order of Maria Theresa,

Knight of the Order of St. George of Russia.

Called the "role model of the Hungarian cavalry leader", Simonyi gained his reputation with his courage and lightning-fast decisions. Cuts and stabs on his head and body testified to his bravery; his men, fanatized by his personal example  followed him without thought into fire or icy flood

In the last phase of the war, he was finally able to show his abilities in a new role: chasing Napoleon's retreating armies at the head of a victorious army.

He performed his last feat on February 20, 1814: at Lyon,
he and his regiment swam across the flooded, icy Rhône River at night, and with his raid he prevented the enemy from reform his lines.
