Regimental History :

Train hard men !

The 5e Régiment de Voltigeurs de la Garde Impériale is one of the oldest light infantry regiments of the community and the oldest French lights regiment.
Everything began with Poko, an officer of a regiment of English-speaking light infantry, " 2nd chasseurs ". In December, 2010, he met Bastien, the general of the 7e Régiment de Hussards. Bastien planned to gather the few French regiments of the community into an Army corps. Then in April 2011 Poko decided to leave the 2nd Chasseurs which were less active.
On his side, Bastien established the IVe Corps d’Armée Français from the 7e Hussards  and by creating the 45e Régiment d’Infanterie de Ligne and the 9e Regiment d’ Artillerie.
The challenge was difficult. Indeed, the not English-speaking regiments were then non-existent in terms of number and renown. From his part Poko wanted to create a French-speaking regiment of light infantry. He thus proposed to Bastien a partnership. He made a commitment to create, to train and to manage the regiment, and benefited in exchange for the massive recruitment of the IVe Corps. The 5e Régiment de Voltigeurs de la Garde Impériale officially opened to recruitment in April, 2011 and became operational in May (with a limited size of 30 people). The first Linebattle in which the regiment participated was May 7th, 2011 (IVe vs 4pp).

After 5 months, Poko simply hadn't the time to run the regiment. It was now,  on September 18th, that BlackHawk took command of the 5e Régiment de Voltigeurs,  with the rank of Lieutenant. He will have for Second-in command O Malley, then Goh and finally Agone. Indeed, it is further to the "split" of the IVe Corps of October 14th, 2011, while there was no other officers or non-commissioned officers other than, while he decided to take care of the regiment. The 5th was dissolved for two days before being re-formed with new officers. These promotions restored a hierarchy and ever since the 5e Voltigeurs has been in perfectly good shape within the IVe Corps d’Armée Français. On July 7th, 2013, BlackHawk and Agone retired with honors and gave the command to Sous-Lieutenant Frantz

The average "age" of the members of the 5th is of 13.5 months and the average of age of 21 years.

Tactics and brief Voltigeurs History

Deployement
The Voltigeurs form, in the infantry regiments, elite companies in the same way as grenadiers. It is a unit of light infantry that form a company within a Infantry battalion.
We find Voltigeurs in the various types of infantry. In companies of light infantry at the side of the chasseurs and the carabiniers. Or still within a line infantry a the side of the fusilliers and the grenadiers.
The only exception is the Imperial guard, the elite reserve of the French army, in which we counted regiments consisting completely of Voltigeurs.
The Voltigeurs de la Garde belonged to the Jeune Garde (Young Garde).

Historically, the French light infantry regiments had only the name of it, because they were equipped and trained as the rest of the infantry. The Voltigeurs constituted the real light infantry of France, in the sense that we made them, usually, do a rifleman's job. Every regiment of infantry has a company of Voltigeurs, which always walks in front of grenadiers. The Voltigeurs could act, under the circumstances, as scouts or protect the left side of the battalion, the right side being defended by grenadiers. Gradually, these foot soldiers will eventually be more particularly intended to act in skirmishing position in front of the line of a battalion.
However, the difference between the tirailleurs and the Voltigeurs dwells in the fact that the first ones evolve in a irregular way, by being scattered, whereas the others act in numerous bodies and regrouped.

In Game Deployement

To the ennemy !
The Voltigeurs were Napoleon's personal invention. We, consequently, only found them in the French army or armies of allied countries.
In theory, the Voltigeur is a soldier capable of jumping in croup of a cavalryman to increase his mobility. Indeed, in his military sense, the Voltigeur is a foot soldier carried in first line by a rider who takes him in croup. The name "Voltigeur" comes from acrobats who realize figures of equestrian acrobatics. So the Voltigeurs are specially intended to be quickly transported by the troops on horseback in the places where their presence would be necessary. They are exercised to go, of a jump, in croup of a cavalryman; to come down from it with agility, to form quickly and to follow on foot a rider walking to the trot. These men must be expert in acrobatics, in jump, in running, in swimming, in the escalation of the most steep cliffs and the highest trees, etc.
For these reasons, the Voltigeurs were generally of small size. The companies consist of well constituted, strong and agile men, but of the smallest size.
The Voltigeur is the finest marksman of the French army, but weaker in the hand-to-hand fight. They are consequently particularly exercised to fire swiftly and accurately. The Voltigeur was nevertheless an elite foot soldier asked to lead the charge. So it was not rare to see them charging a strengthened position or decimating the artillery positions of the enemy. They are generally employed to climb mountains or to force the difficult passages; grenadiers following at short distance, but it is the privilege of the Voltigeurs to open the road to the victory.

The Voltigeurs also distinguished themselves by their equipment.
They are equipped with a sabre of infantry and a very-light rifle, model used by the Dragoon. The officers and the non-commissioned officers have, instead of rifle, a crossed-off rifle.
The Voltigeurs were dressed as the heavy infantry and wore the distinguishing marks of their respective Corps. They wore collars of yellow chamois and shoulder straps with green fringes. Finally, instead of drums, a company of Voltigeurs will have for military instruments, small cor de chasse were called "cornets".

The Voltigeurs de la Garde were used as model to their homonyms of the line because they were created on one year previously, that is in 1804.

Quote
« I was quite surprised, by returning in France, of the high idea that we had formed of the Imperial Guard and little case that was made of Voltigeurs that were barely distinguished from any company of the centre. However the Voltigeurs fought one thousand times more than Guards. They were always ahead fighting when the Guards stood as reserve. There wasn’t a gunshot fired without them, and the Guard, which rarely took part in the small fights, appeared almost so rarely in the battles. Finally, the Voltigeurs were the elite of the Corps whilst a part of the Guard were scraps. Whoever saw it by is own eyes knows that many colonels sent to Paris only the men they wanted to get rid of, whereas the captains of Voltigeurs only admitted in their companies soldiers of a tried courage.
So I would have preferred for an attack, to command three hundred Voltigeurs than five hundred men of the Guard..
