Title: Free to use ranks for forum.
Post by: FAULTYscotsman on February 19, 2014, 08:55:02 pm
Hello,

Ive made these ranks for the 16th scot but I thought of just letting everyone else use them as well.

This is what I have done so far, If there is a rank missing you want added in dont hesitate to ask. If you want your Reg name on it just post your regiment name and Ill add it.

If you have any suggestions please suggest away, If you want something added to make it unique please dont hesitate to ask.

I may or may not do for another faction

If your using them gives a post to your forum thread, I want to see how good they will look :P

Sergeant Major.
Sergeant Major isn't a rank in the British Army, I am not to sure about WW1.

Marksman is just made up.

You should add Colour Serjeant/Staff Serjeant though.

Some alternative colouration for the chevrons might be wise as well; white, gold, etc.

Marksman was not a rank true but it was awarded to the best shots

WO2 (CSM) had a different badge in the beginning of the war some CSM's had 3 upsidedown chevrons with a crown on top (CSgt's gone drunk) That's if you want something to do.

and class 1 is the WO with the coat of arms and class 2 was actually just a crown. The wreaths were just for an RQMS or and RQMS technical.

oh and there were no "sergeant majors" there were warrant officers who held the position of either Company Sergeant Major, Regimental Quarter Master Sergeant, Drill Sergeant Major, Battalion Sergeant Major, and Regimental Sergeant Major. (may have missed a few)

No it is not, it is an appointment held by a warrant officer.

It was not an appointment... RSM and CSM were, and still are.

"In 1881, the cavalry RSM and infantry sergeant major were among a number of senior non-commissioned positions that were confirmed with warrants, making them warrant officers. This was extended and rationalised in 1915, with the introduction of the new ranks of warrant officer class I (WOI) and warrant officer class II (WOII). RSM became an appointment of the former, CSM and SSM of the latter."

"Regimental sergeant-majors are never addressed as "Sergeant-Major"; they are addressed by rank or as "Mr (Surname)" or "Ms (Surname)", and thereafter by subordinates as "Sir" or "Ma'am". "RSM" is reserved for use by the commanding officer."

I think we all have our tenses confused, at least we can all leave this argument being technically correct.
