History of the Regiment
They Fought at Buçaco, at the Coa and at Nivelle amongst others. I am of course talking about the 1st Cazadores Battalion. At it's origin, is the "Portalegre Volunteer Regiment"created in July 1808, to Rise up aginst the french in the "Alentejo" Region. A few months afterwards, in October 1808 it was renamed and became a Caçadores Battalion due to it's men beeing familier with the terrain and allready used to fire arms such as muskets. They were the most professional regiment of the Caçadores, along with the 3rd, they were considered the best in fighting and in scouting. After the Campaign ended, some of them were even accepted in the 95th Rifles and, during the same campaign fought alongside them !
It was composed of 5 Companies, 4 of them of regular Caçadores and 1 of the Elite "Atiradores". Just like the rest of the Caçadores regiments, they were dressed in the caracteristic Brown uniforms deemed better than the green ones used by their british equivalets because they blended in better in the Alentejo dry lands. This regiment in special was distinguished by the black collar, the Skye Blue cuffs and by the Standard Black Piping and Lining. It was part of Craufurds Light Division integrating the 2nd Brigade along with the 52nd and the 95th. It had it's quarters in "Castelo de Vide".
