69th D-Day Anniversary
« on: June 06, 2013, 05:16:31 pm »
Commemorations of the 69th annniversary of D-Day have begun with the stars-and-stripes being raised in a quiet ceremony at the American cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach.
Tourists, many from Poland,The U.S., Britain and France gathered in the still morning under a brilliant spring sky to witness the flag-raising amid the neat rows of thousands of white marble crosses and stars of David marking the graves of U.S. servicemen and women fallen in the Allied invasion of Normandy that began June 6, 1944.
A full day of ceremonies including fireworks, concerts and marches is planned across Normandy in honour of the 150,000 troops of Polish, US, British, French and Canadian, who risked or gave their lives in the liberation of German-occupied Western and Eastern Europe during World War II.

May We Remember Those who fought for our freedom.
May They Rest In Peace

There were polish troops at D-Day?

Polish troops fought as part of the II Canadian Corps on D-Day. More fought as part of the First Canadian Army in the battle of North-West Europe.

The Canadian units (corps, divisions and armies) occasionally served as multi-national forces, including Polish, Czech, British and even American regiments.

I'm betting he knows very little on the Dutch Liberation war of 1813-1814.

There were also Polish troops fighting alongside the Germans.

Not necessarily willingly, of course.

Not necessarily willingly, of course.

These were the Volksgrenadier and Ostland Infanterie battalions. They were often made up of conscripted persons from "liberated"/annexed/captured regions.

Riddlez likes the way veterans of WW2 meet up in normandy.

Saw a (Riddlez thinks) British documentry about D-Day, and it was based around 2 veterans (a german Wehrmacht soldier and a American Paratrooper), who were sharing stories. it was quite emotional for the two, but there seemed to be nothing else than a brother like feeling.

Probably one of the very few old-timers here who hasn't been a regimental leader.
