No Officer Shooting Rule
« on: February 07, 2015, 12:50:02 pm »
Just a brief introduction to myself. I am an Australian NW player (yes we have line battles and events here!) and I am a co leader of a regiment here in Aus! I was wondering why NA and EU sometimes use the No Officer targeting rule. In AU, we never use any sort of rule, we expect all leaders and co leaders of regiments to be able to lead, as well as their ranker's. I was wondering why you guys sometimes use this rule! Thanks!

Because officers also want to play the game, and not be killed at every first volley.

The officer gets to wear that shiny uniform with a price that is people trying to wipe him out with only one thing to defend himself with, rules.

Many regiments in NA and EU will tell their members to shoot the officer first if there is no rule on officer aim. This is why we have officer aim rules. I even see it in NWL, if a regiment is charging they will say "shoot the officer!" because they are allowed to OA if a regiment is charging.

Well if you wish to truly beat your enemy it should be when he is operating at full capacity. So you know that you outplayed and outsmarted him

Well I am going to say this.

In the War of 1812 and many wars around that time, "officer aiming" technically wasn't allowed. It was an unjust thing to do while in a skirmish.

This.

But the main reason is probably that the lines don't get disorders. Because then there would be no formation, fire in charge and so on.

I always aim at the officer.

Me also. I hate these officers running around and behaving like "Oh, you see, I'm wearing a fancy uiform, so don't shoot me, also if I am shooting at you!!"

In the War of 1812 and many wars around that time, "officer aiming" technically wasn't allowed. It was an unjust thing to do while in a skirmish.

Riflemen would specifically target officers to create havoc in the ranks.

Although war was seen as a 'gentleman's' pastime in reality it wasn't. Rankers and officers came from two complete backgrounds, so different that in truth the officer rarely got on with his men. It was seen as a duty to serve in the British Army and so many young (wealthy) men did. I doubt very much whether a ranker gave a damn about shooting an enemy officer. He would shoot at whoever was opposing him. In melee it was different as if you captured an enemy officer then you might get a bounty/reward. But this rule was invented because too many officers complained they didnt get to play the game as they always died first.

Also any sources you find (well most) would have been written by those wealthy men who could afford to educate their children and afford writing utensils. So of course many sources will say that officer aiming was ungentleman like and was against the gentleman's code. But in reality it would have been much, much different.
