Seeing those swedes getting hit by a cannonball i find it unimaginable the dicipline of the soldiers. I mean you're 100 paces from your enemy who's just shooting you and you're also getting bombarded by artillery.

You had to have balls and be desperate to be a soldier in the 17th to 19th centuries. If you got hit anywhere but a fleshy part of the body you'd have mortal or crippling injuries plus the civil population hated you and you'd look forward to being deaf and living off a meager state pension if you survived. But hey, the ladies loved the uniforms right?

In the Carolean army, they'd shoot you if you moved your legs to avoid a rolling cannonball  :P

Idealistic, stupid, or desperate. It's why people hated conscription so much - It puts people who are not one of those classes in those miserable condition.

Don't forget any lack of rising in the ranks for the common man until the mid-late 19th century too. Best you'd get maybe was Corporal or Sergeant if you were really lucky!

I mean, it could be worse. You could be press ganged for a decade to do Landsmen duties on a ship at sea.

They were taught that God decided when they would die and they had nothing to do with it. Ducking wouldn't solwe anything. This is one of the basic pillars of the Carolean tactics.

I hate to burst your bubble but that's what everybody was thought. Every bullet had a name on it, was the common believe. It comes with the religious feeling entertained by both Catholics and certain protestant streams, like Calvijn (I think), that everything in your life was determined by God the moment you were born: Calvijn even said whether you will go to hell or to heaven was pre-determinded.

Of course another great big part of the whole keep-standing-up thing was pure tradition. People hadn't ducked when arrows flew their way, why do so with bullets?

I've tried to make a GIF of the artillery duel in Gods and Generals, but somehow my computer refuses to upload the damn thing. Says it's oversized...Ah well.
