Regulation,

Whoever take high command of the regiment must sleath their sword out. Thats how guys in line know whos in command among mess of officers. Also sign of respect. "Sir i am keeping my sword hilt to pass the command to you"

Taking the hilt off a weapon seems like a bad idea to me, tangs can't be very comfortable to hold.

Do you mean scabbard?

Crawling back to you,
Ever thought of calling when you've had a few? 'cause I always do.

Why do ACW groups ALWAYS and then I mean ALWAYS have an officer? What's the issue with having a sergeant commanding a group of 20 men?

When that happens, Sgt get promoted then.

Officers do take hit in battle too, they're rarely shown but it happens often. At GAC, my captain collasped due to heatstroke, First Sergeant took over the company and led us through the Wheatfield.

Historically, after the battle, company will have election to get a new captain. During the battle, Jr officer or senior NCO takes over.

Missed this parade, we didn't arrive until 6.30pm, due to traffic around Ghent and Antwerp
