A strange trend within regiments I have seen lately.
« on: March 05, 2013, 03:21:36 am »
Turning to the side while reloading. It grates me a lot, and many newer regiments seem to be doing it. It's a cop out if you ask me.

What do you guys think about it?

An "MLG-pro" tactic if I've ever seen one. The hitboxes on your character's left are harder to hit, so presenting your left side could help you stay a little more safe than usual. It hasn't been tested thoroughly of course. But I agree, it does look pretty silly. :D

It works moderately well, and it's not particularly cheap, so I'd say it's fine.

"Heard" it makes you harder to hit since your sides hitbox is smaller than your bodies (physically obvious) I don't really thinks its a cop out since your only turning to the side.  If you glitched into a teammate or something that's a cop out ;)

It only reduces the chances of being hit very little.

It is practically an exploit of the no-spacing rule. You line up shoulder to shoulder and take shots, but when yuo reload you left face and you practically half half-man spacing.

I have my guys aim while loading so this wouldnt work for me  :P
Of course, I also think lines should be able to move in double rank without having emotional breakdowns.

Pretty much my thoughts on this, it's better to dedicate aiming time versus trying to reduce a hitbox, where I doubt it helps.

Yeah, and to see it popping up more and more makes me sad. At least there are still regiments out there that don't use it.

One of the reasons the 8th isn't a big fan of the tactic.  I mean, are you really that worried about dying in a videogame, where half the fun is in not knowing when you're going to get shot?

I am not sure but I was going through a list of Civil war commands and did men in formation in a civil war reload standing side ways sometimes, at which point the command "cast about" was given? I am unsure in what relation it was though.

What I really hate and have seen once or twice in my regiment have been utter cowards moving out of the line to reload behind another person. When I see that I am moved to tk the individual on sight if he/she be in my regiment. It not only endangers the regiment it also screws up the organization heh.

Speaking as a Napoleonic re-enactor, when presenting and aiming your musket your right feet points to the side, making your body look like it's half turn.

That's my addition to this thread. Tally-ho!

I've also noticed it. Seems to help but I won't be getting my guys to do it. They can die. Also, like Millander said, takes away the ability to aim while reloading.

One could argue that this is creating gaps, sure, but I can't see this being effective no matter what. With the focus elsewhere, I think the aiming of the regiments doing this will become a lot worse. If you dislike it though, just disallow it on your events.

Aye, its kinda lame, but unfortunately its not an exploit or a glitch so its kinda hard to forbid. Its just a tactic, something which anyone can adopt so personally I think its fair. Similar to hill camping, or retreating to reload after each volley. The people who don't use it feel disadvantaged, but the people who do use it don't really have to justify it.
