you let people into your regiment, which brings in their members with different ways of doing stuff
which will influence member opinion
and in many cases
result in them leaving perhaps taking more members with them.

They never work.

Spoken from true experience.

Also, joining coalitions where you don't know other people in them, it also ends very badly in my experience.  :P

They work if you know what to do.

Since my BG2 clan i was in the 77th merged with 42 Commando we've had it very good and we consider ourselves more 42 Commando then 77th. I was a Sergeant in 77th by the way.

They can work under certain circumstances. But not two groups which no very little about each other combining. that will not work.

Usually they only work if the two regiments in questions already socialize. That is to say, perhaps they're in a coalition together and their members play together, etc. This makes members feel much more comfortable around each other. The opposite is true when the two regiments' members don't know each other and can end in animosity. I would recommend working together for a few line battles first and encouraging your members to play together first. If all goes well  for a few weeks and everyone is comfortable with each other and their new potential officers, then a merge will likely succeed.

As stated above the rank and file need to be happy with members of the other regiment not just the officers. Also I recommend making a new name out of it. I say this because the regiment merging in will feel that they "lost" their identity while the others kept it.
Of course, I also think lines should be able to move in double rank without having emotional breakdowns.

Name change is not necessary in my opinion, the regiment who merged simply has to deal with it it's just something they accepted. Merges can in general go well but if you don't know what to do you can cause alot of people to leave and unrest in your regiment.

Yeah it just won't work, unless both regiments are new and not well established, or alternatively have known each other for a long time and are quite close.

A whole lot of work, and can lead to difficult situations.

That said, the EPI is looking for anyone who wishes to merges with us. Everyone who joins recieves the rare status of 'Rekruten', and if pressed we can give the ex CO's the coveted 'Oberrekruten' rank. Ranks may or may not give hierarchical benefits.

Merges can work, but not if you underestimate it.
