Well how about you use the No firing in charge rule? It helps a lot to keep regiments away from eachother.

"the way the game is made, affects the way its played"

i will provide some examples and draw forth
the differences between the actual real wars
and this game battles
im not a Magician, correct me if I'm wrong about some of this.

Examples

Double ranks
in-game
Regiments don't usually pull up double ranks as that makes them a bigger target for enemy fire from cannons and lines
and makes them slow and hard to maneuver

Real life
a double rank doubled the fire effectiveness of the line
providing a good defence against cavalry as well.

Infantry Squares
real life
a very effective way to fight of cavalry charges from the enemy
only about 1 in 10 squares actually broke

in-game
the horses don't become scared and move at the complete control of the player
which works against using this "formation"
I.e cav jumping off 200 feet cliffs for lolz.

Snaking
in-game
they snake around cause its the easiest way to move without getting hindered by obstacles
and you can quite rapidly avoid enemy fire.

real life
i have never heard of any such thing from any sort of line engagement.

This is my honest opinion regarding this whole matter,

"play in events which enforce the rules you like, if not, make your own event."

A good square ingame does work, if the event has banned 'cav-jumping'

As Prideo said, host your own events, and create the rules as you think they will work the best. Thought, you're right this is about Napoleonic Wars, but NW - the game is based on melee, you can't blame regiments to use that, just because they have the most fun then. Games are supposed to be fun, not boring.

Best of luck with whatever you will do! :)

I've found that a good defense against cavalry is too blob up and hold up attacks.

The up attacks have the range to stab the rider off his horse in addition to the fact that once most cavalry regiment see that, they have to:
 1) either run in circles around us, trying best not to get killed
 2) retreat

The times that I have used it have kept us alive.

It's really up to each regiment what they want to do for their team.

Back in the olden (Golden) days of Line Battles in Battle Grounds 1 (2005-2006) and Battle Grounds 2 (2007-2008). The main focus was on firing. Melee was usually attempted when one of the lines were down to say 3-4 (The maximum limit to contain a firing line before going into skirmish).

I loved this kind of Line Battles, and I miss it in Napoleonic Wars. It would be fun if more clans focuses on firing, but like I said. It's up to each clan. We in The Royal Recruits try to maintain our way of playing from Battle Grounds 1 and Battle Grounds 2. One of the reasons is because we have done this since we established the standardized line battle rules for Battle Grounds 1 back in 2004 and simply love firing and a second reason is that, we are not too shabby with melee yet :P.

Note: BG 1 and BG 2 Line Battles were mostly 1on1s. 16v16 were max in Battle Grounds 1 (HL1 Mod) while 32 vs 32 were max in Battle Ground 2 (HL2 Mod, Later Orange Box)Line battles.

I agree, for obvious reasons.
it seems that the person on the wrong end of 5arge always seems to get the punishment.

I also agree. Beating a brick wall is useless unless you can find a way to climb over it.

Our one regiment rule really is to just have fun, shoot dudes with silly hats with big guns in lines and keep ourselves to ourselves in our Mumble channel instead of using all chat except for warning about enemy line.

Oh, that and we're all Colonels.

But seriously guys, kick back have fun and enjoy the game. Let Admins do their general job, and be cool to each other and have fun.

Historicly they would move up 50-40 meters close, take 2 or 3 volleys then bayonet charge the enemy. Loading a musket is a very tiresome thing on the range and imagine how it would be if you're standing in a line trying to reload while gettings shot at.

Dude, I really think we should set aside caring who wins and who doesn't. If you are a small regiment, just stay back and take long range shots as the large regiments tank the damage. I really think we need to have a regimental leader meeting and figure out a way to recreate proper battles with hundreds of players having a gunbattle in the middle of the map really. The Patriot movie comes to mind =)

Thundersnow has done it already, his mode is called Flag Wars. Every line must stay within 30 yards of the color company (friendly line w/the flag). Round ends when the enemy colors are captured.

I love the mode, it forces regiments to fight as a battalion. The problem is most regiment leaders use the tactics that you have described and the color company moves w/o telling other regiments sometimes.

The 1st one was good, mainly because Millander would inform what his plan was through team chat, he would find a good piece of ground and let the other regiments form around him.

It works when you pick a good color company...the problem is most reg leaders want to do their own thing which is unfortunate.

What you said about double collumns, reminds me of another taboo in this community, no regiment seems to get the advantages it brings

Which is?

I am tempted to do my own linebattle again and test out some new/old stuff to get a more realistic/different linebattle but it might take awhile to set up and afew test runs to see if the rules even work ill let you know if I decide to do it  :)

I feel its time I make a come back into this community  ;D
