it could have been a misunderstanding, I rethought requesting a ban for the user who I won't name for now.

That's an obvious brush off.

Guess it's just something that has to be accepted.

At least we didn't enter a War three years late, hardly do anything then walk out of it like we won the whole dam thing :P If you wish to talk about ego please do tell. In terms of historic discussion try and debate your point.

No American with half a brain actually believes we "won the whole damn thing" in the Great War.

Please learn to troll better. Good trolling involves a grain of truth. Your statement lacked any.

Anyway, you people's sexual fetish for what YOU call "debate" simply acts as a reason to obscure truths that you don't like on a personal level. The question is who "won" the war of 1812. No one won it. I've been reading the thread from page 1 up to this point and I can say it has been nothing but a small handful of people who know what they are talking about being constantly told "no you're wrong" and having the same incorrect crap spit at them, i.e. "The US wanted to annex Canada and they failed so you LOST!," which is absolutely not what we wanted, but it is constantly restated because it adds credence to the "we won" argument.

The crime and the laugh here is that we have a bunch of sentimental, pride loving philistines trying to "debate" as if they know what debate is; a bunch of folks begging for "credible sources" who wouldn't know a credible source if said source pissed on their shoe.

Now you've all had your fun, you all got your power trip and your egos sated by keeping me here past the point that I said I was leaving. Good on you. But now truthfully I'm done with this topic. Any replies directed at me won't be read by me, so please use this as an opportunity to take the best Parthian shots you can, because everyone knows last word makes you the winner, or something...

Ramsay, it would be nice if you would respond with an argument and discussion rather than saying you have one, but won't give it.

I DON'T have an argument. I have truth. Truth stands on its own. It was a glorified draw. History agrees with me. Most of academia agrees with me. I'm not going to get baited into a pissing contest.

The problem with these "discussions" is that very few of you argue from reason and fact, but rather argue from sentimentality and pride. Strangely enough, I'm an American and I refuse to assert any sort of American "victory." I've made that very clear.
You already have.

You're right. I should bail out now then. Thanks for the wakeup.

In terms of the actual reasons for war, both America and Britan were able to achieve their goals. America declared war because Britain had been kidnapping and forcing American sailors into the British Navy. Britain had also imposed trade restrictions between France and the United States which was seen by many as illegal in international law. Britain also still maintained outposts in what was American frontier territory. Despite famous British victories that led to the White House being burnt down, America had achieved enough during the war for Britain to settle for peace. In terms of land, the war ended in status quo, Britain had agreed to cease impressment of American sailors, as well as the abandonment of British outposts in American territory. In exchange, America withdrew troops from British Canada and enter an agreement with Britain to work towards ending the international slave trade.

The war fell into a stalemate leading to both countries eagerly wanting to sue for peace, British invasions of Maine, Maryland, and technically Louisiana had been defeated while several American invasions of Canada had been defeated. The only lasting victory that any side gained during the war was the American victory over Native American tribes allied to Britain, resulting in there being no possibility of a united Indian confederacy.

This is where the thread reached its conclusion. This guy said it best.

I find it very distressing how silent the staff is on this.

I'm sorry, I didn't know I needed to type out a novel of elaborate crap just to pad an obvious truth. My mistake.

We can sum this thread up perfectly with these words:

UK and Euro contributors find any possible way to bend a glorified stalemate into a UK victory to appease their egos or sate their derisiveness towards Americans.

The end.

But seeing how in this community Americans are a minority, I fully understand the fact that I just have to accept the status-quo even when it's wrong so... Hurrah UK you beat us good!

Gross oversimplification of the event, but I  have neither the patience nor the civility for a protracted argument so I'll just let you have this one. The truth of my statement doesn't need me going back and forth with you for God knows how many pages to make it any more true.

I'm surprised this topic never generated interest......

I'm loathe to lock it, but I'll let it die whatever death it dies and not make another comment.

What we Americans call the War of 1812 was more of a Napoleanic sideshow than anything else, and we stayed completely on our continent (excepting naval action, obviously...). That's a good reason for "why not the United States." Hey, I am as big a patriot as the next American but come on, have some sense man. We don't belong as a faction in NW.

you can tell this community has a large European representation when "Brits won" is winning the poll (we certainly didn't "win" it either).

The only good, solid answer is "it really sucked for the natives."

Minor border tweaking and symbolic burnings with no practical ramifications do not amount to a "win" in anyone's column.
