| The 1er Régiment de Hussards is one of the five firsts hussars regiments coming down from the Old Regime. He's the heir of the Bercheny's Traditions, that's why his nickname is Bernechy Houzards. Created in 1720, he bravely fought during the Revolution War and the First Empire War. During the Revolution War, he participated to the 1st Italy Campaign where he saw the battlefield on the bridge of Arcole or Lodi, as well as the battle of Rivoli or Marengo. In 1806, crowned after its brilliant victory in Jena, the 1er Régiment de Hussards will have the honor to supply the squadron of service to Napoleon, instead of the cavalry of the Guarde, then away. It made of 1er Hussards, an elite regiment to the Emperor. In 1807, the 1er Hussards becomes famous again in the victory of Eylau by charging bravely the enemy to clear the stuck Emperor, what will be worth him having the name of Eylau on his banner. During the same year he will also participate in the battle of Friedland. The 1er Hussards made brief raids for the North of Spain as well as for Portugal from 1809 till 1812. Back in France, he will go away then for the campaign of Germany of 1813 where he will fight at Leipzig. From 1814 till 1815 he will participate briefly in campaign of France and Belgium, in the battle of Mincio and Namur.
Even Napoléon will summarize a part of the history of 1er Hussards so: " This regiment did not stop fighting either altogether, or partially. He was almost renewed until five or six times, but the truth deserving being asserted by the Generals, it is that officers, non-commissioned officers and hussars all carried out the duty. From 1792 till 1801, he attended 37 battles, 168 fights, 1310 affairs and matches the same time 26 300 prisoners, taken 40 flags, 303 mouths fire. "
Nowadays, the 1er Régiment de Hussards still exists under the name of 1er Régiment de Hussards Parachutiste and this since 1946. He is based to Tarbes, below Toulouse in feet from Pyrenees, in France.
