Developer Blog 10 - Enfield Pattern 1853

Welcome back to the tenth developer blog for Battle Cry of Freedom. This week unfortunately due to the nature of our current work we don’t have very much to show. Early development of any game tends to be based more on complicated pages of code than of anything tangible, however we cracked the whips and our modeling team produced this little beauty for you to enjoy.

Introducing the London Armoury Enfield Pattern 1853 3 Band Rifled Musket. This was a rare weapon imported from England in 1862, and is arguably the best Enfield used during the civil war. It uses standard .577 Caliber with 3 groove rifling, 39" barrel, with brass furniture, and sling swivels. It is pretty.

We hope you enjoy the picture, and are as excited as we are at the thought of using it ingame!

Thanks once again for your support, this game could not be made without you.

Yeah, they are... We are making huge progress in the coding part of the game, but there is not much we can show you... I guess showing you C# code is not that interesting :P We will get back to longer Devblogs soon!

I don't mind it at all, this early in the stage of making a game should be making the frame. I like checking up on the game but if you don't have anything then I'm fine. Safe in the thought you guys are working hard on it.

Post by: John Cameron on February 12, 2013, 10:01:02 am
I am looking forward to see the uniforms as well! :)

I hope there will be a huge variation, especially for the southern troops, as many of them did not have a common uniform. So I hope one will be able to choose what to dress his soldier like. What cap / hats , what trousers / shirts  (slightly different colour variants) etc they will use.

With the new engine, will you be capable of providing proper animations for reloading? Holding a visible ramrod, to name one thing, would be nice. Cocking, putting the cartridge in and similar minor details will make it look a lot better.
Title: Re: Developer Blog 10 - Enfield Pattern 1853
Post by: Vincenzo on February 12, 2013, 03:00:37 pm
Naturally in this engine we have a lot more freedom to finally make what is right, as such naturally we will have a realistic full reloading system where you actually put something in the rifle.

And we won't show uniforms etc. yet... if we shoot out all our bullets we won't have any surprises for you lot.  :D

Nice question Tali and I am happy this is getting addressed.

I guess the uniforms are the top of the cake and get released / shown at the end huh? Oh well guess we have to wait than.

Who made the Rifle if I may ask? Olafson or Admiral? I guess we can expect the same quality and details on the uniforms?

Sorry to ask that many questions at once but after listening to the soundtrack (single track) you showed us in one of the last blogs I am really hyped up about this again :D

It's there but because they decided to do accurate pitting and aging, the arsenal markings are gone.

Lol, let's keep this stuff out of a developer's blog, please. That little snipit can cause a whole off-topic debate.

I was curious, as to whether or not if guns can have different "skins." Such as, very battle worn, or fresh from the armory?

That's very interesting that the game is developed under C#, I thought it's written in Python or something like that.

The Unity engine will be a lot nicer and hopefully it will be a lot better in terms of graphics, smoothness of play and hopefully a lot less buggy

Second question, if you do add the 1861 Springfield, how about the 1852 Mississippi?

Well there's the 1841 Mississippi rifle already created, not sure if FSE will include the 1852 version:

I'll point you to this article Milly...

http://www.authentic-campaigner.com/articles/walden/enfblue.htm

which states:

Quote
I'll give you the bottom line right up front: there is no period evidence to support an all-or-none stand on either side. That is, there is no clear-cut period evidence to support an opinion that either a blued or bright finish is more authentic. Of course, this could be modified for specific units at specific times and locations, but as a general rule, both Federals and Confederates used Enfields that were both blued and bright, and in-depth research does not indicate that either finish was in enough of a majority to be the clear-cut more authentic choice for the finish on a repro Enfield today. So to those who put out the all-or-none rule … that all (or the vast majority) Enfields were exported to America with bright finishes or were struck bright once they got here, thus, all repro Enfields must be bright in order to be authentic … sorry, folks, it just isn't true, and you can’t back it up with period evidence.
