so rumours have said that the dates have been confirmed for Hastings 950th.

It is apparently set to take place on October 16th 2016.

book it in your diaries! its gonna be epic! They are expecting twice as many reenactors as there was at the 150th of Gettysburg.

the 940th of Hastings in 2006, had 15 000 reenactors on the field!

I will be there, swinging my future dane axe around  :D

Yes, at the actual field in Hastings in England.

I will be there as one of king Harold's bodyguards called the housecarls or huscarls in modern English. We swing the big axes taunting the Normans :D

Armour is chain mail or gambesons. Depending on how rich of a person you are representing. For safety reasons, we usually use chain mail.

Hope to see ya there :)

plus the equipment i have to buy thats accurate to within a 15 year period. and i have 3 years to do it.

EDIT: $2000 is at the moment. It could rise or it could drop between then and now. I dont think I can actually book my ticket for 2016 yet.

NO, most Airlines only allow 9 months pre to actually book, which is a little silly.

Hey, I've met that guy in the red/white spangenhelm.
He was King David when we did the Battle of the Standard at Kelmarsh, seemed like a cool guy, got really into it and got people to drag him away from the battle when our army routed.
Some of the cavalry guys look familiar too.

So many cringes in that gallery though. So many farbs with rusty gear. All those lopsided helmets. Leather vambraces hghghnghnnn.

But seriously, rust makes me want to smack a bitch.

i know that for the reenactment of Hastings, everything, and i mean everything, must be accurate within a 15 year period from 1050 to 1066.

Leather vambraces don't appear in any historical source that I know of, and I don't even think I've seen any osprey style modern drawings that feature them. As far as I can tell they're just from D&D/Hollywood because both consider it sacrilege to show someone's wrist.

Wearing a spangenhelm with the noseguard sticking out like a duck's bill is just wrong and letting your gear rust is just completely moronic, especially when it's so easy to prevent.

Maille was (and still is) expensive as hell, and your life relies on it, you're not gonna let rust eat through it because you had to wear it in the rain. You're gonna coat it in oil and if it does happen to rust despite that, you scour it clean - if you're a Knight you're lucky enough to have a squire who can put your maille in a barrel of sand and roll it around.

Letting your sword rust is a great way to make sure the blade's gonna fall off and get you slaughtered too.

Look after your gear, kids.

true, good point.

but the people who had the wealth to own mail wouldnt have maintained it themselves, they would get slaves or other people to do it for them...

Now that is done, I will scour the internet for my face :p I was in the left flank of the saxon side on sunday, and in the scripted fight, it was absolute chaos, so glad no-one got injured by one of the horses, the charge, as planned ended in much death, but I must say we put up a poor fight. Anyway the conversations we had while we waited were great XD they decided the woman from the voice-over should narate porn, and the conversation went on... Needless to say the back of my shield never looked so interesting XD As for the unscripted fight, wicker and valhala held the right flank of the normans, yet they died so quickly to our spearmen, the total battle lasting 4 mins -saxons victorious. Anyhow, next year should be even more epic, we had maybe 200 infantry on both sides, with maybe 20 cav and 20 archers on the normans? I'm not sure, but pretty sure the saxons had more than 1 archer in the actual battle...

With regard to the 950th anniversery, I heard a rumour about us doing it in the actual location, aka the roundabout outside battle abbey XD at least it avoids those accursed mounds...

I don't do re-enactment and I've never been to see one before, but I live close by and I've decided I'll definitely come to watch. I'm assuming you're all referring to the English Heritage event? They're saying there's going to be over a thousand reenactors:

http://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/whats-on/battle-15-oct/

So I have a question-which day is the battle going to be reenacted? They sell tickets for Sat 15th and Sun 16th Oct. Or is it going to be done on both days?

I am guessing both days. I have done Napoleonic stuff in the past and events usually last two days, the Saturday and the Sunday (not counting late Friday's when everything is set up). I have not been to a proper Medieval Re-enactment for years (not counting Country Fairs and things) but again they usually last two days.

Yeah it's over both days, from what I've heard we'll be doing morning skirmishes, archery displays, kiddie vike and then the main event mid afternoon. Last year there were two fights in the afternoon, the first acting out history, and the second to see which side would win on skill, ie an unscripted fight. As for how many there, I heared rumour of there being more reenacters there than there was in the original battle, this might not be true but it'll be close. Last year there was about 2-3 thousand I believe, about 85% infantry, the rest spread between cavalry and archers

Alright, update on what I said it looks like there should be about 900 reenacters from the English vike, and possibly 1.3k in total, so not as big as I was told. Anyway I've been told to get there on Thursday because we have something happening early Friday, and that we're leaving on the mid Sunday so I'm guessing events all Friday Saturday and Sunday morning- some of this may not be for public viewing, so go by the dates on English heritages page. Anyhow, if anyone is coming, either to visit or take part, see you there ;) might post my shield on here later idk

Not a re-enactor (though I am an archer) but:

What I have heard is that on arrows during re-enactments, there aren't actual arrowheads but 're-enactor points'). Which is basically a small rubber tip over the point of the arrow.
These are not the giant, squishy heads they use in LARP, but like this:

Additionally, but I do not know if this is standard practive, is that the draw weight of the bows is limited to a set amount. Historical warbows would be immensely strong and even with a rubber tip, you could break someone's bones when you'd have a historically correct warbow. (120lb for an English longbow (usually, but could go up to 160lb) and roughly 80lb for a turkish horseman's bow).

Besides the danger of causing damage to people, it is very hard to find people strong enough to draw even a 60lb bow.
A draw-weight I have heard repeatedly was 40 or 50 pounds in draw weight for re-enactments.

yup that is correct, the draw weight is maxed at 35lb simply to prevent permanent damage, however back in 2006 some idiot decided to use sharps with rubber covers that meant as the arrow hit a shield, the sharp broke through the rubber and in bedded in the shield- so glad no-one was hurt. Realistically though the arrows still leave a mark like paintballs, so it hurts to get hit- during training we had a few archers shooting us from close range and that did hurt a lot XD

Anyway the event is over unfortunately :'(

I was there all days, but it was interesting fighting- I was in the middle section of the Saxon army both times for the main battles and it hurt XD first day we faced the italians and germans I believe, ie reenacters from Italy and Germany. However both were not well versed in the English fighting system so fought very dangerously despite being yelled at by officers on both sides XD in some instances literrally jumping onto spear and sword points to shouder charge our line full pelt which is fine when we are prepared as we can keep our weapons back but since we were already ingaged this was very hard to stop stabbng both them and allys in the face. I died in this first fight being stabbed by 3 or so two handed spears from the Norman side. Second day we saw less action to start with since we were standing between the melee however the french line decided to attempt a boar snout- of you don't know what that is it's when you get a heavy person at the front of a triangle formation and they advance in a triangle. This might not sound effective, but the heavy guy leans backwards such that there is essentially a spring action when he stops that and the entire formation is thrown towards the enemy line. This is very effective to do when done properly, but it was a very slow effort from the Norman soldiers as it was very slow and didn't punch through the line, rather it stretched it and they got cut down. Further on the right flank a saxon boar snout was in play which annihilated the majority of the norman left flank, except due to overwhelming odds they got cut down in their efforts but put on an amazing show.

All in all, about 1200 foot soldiers, 50 cavalry and 80 archers were fielded which made a very impressive display

If you watch this you can see me defending against the archers on the first day:
