Title: Forum Games: Announcements, Discussion, and Resolutions Board
Post by: Volk on December 11, 2015, 01:27:26 am
(https://www.fsegames.eu/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi750.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fxx149%2FLandPie%2Fforum-games-v1_zpsbbepofri.png&hash=e8478cad1d05b870ae192d3336581638209f8ce3)

This thread is dedicated to providing a centralized and organised environment for people with an interest in forum games to discuss, share ideas, or talk about matters relating to Forum Games. Please refrain from creating other threads for questions or discussions and instead post here; it is much more efficient this way.

The Forum Games section of FSE has decided to reorganize. Starting 20/03/2016, a board of GMs will be in place with the aid of Moderator Duuring to keep Forum Games running smoothly and efficiently. The board is subject to change, and is composed of GMs that have experience and are respected by the players. Their responsibilities will be to simply promote efficiency in the Forum Games section, help manage and streamline future Forum Games, come together to form resolutions and plans for Forum Games in the future, as well as (hopefully not) coming together to deal with toxic players. The players will have a say in all matters, while it is up to the GMs to create and enforce official Forum Games resolutions and plans.

GMs will be admitted to the Board of GMs by player vote as well as endorsement by current GMs and Duuring.

Enlightenment hasn't really stopped, it's just become quite inactive, so I think it should still be in the current games section...

And pls add BoP: Age of Antiquity to the WIP games.

It's still alive, however like you correctly guessed, me writing and GMing a lot more Forum Games has recently taken up my schedule. Once things quiet down and a proper work schedule is created for myself then I'll be able to resume The Bus

In an unrelated but awesome note, I've added a section for Sigs, Banners, and other dank stuff on the Discussion, Guide, and BoP: Europe 1915 thread. Many many thanks to Windflower for his awesome photoshop skills. Pick up some merchandise on your way off this thread, or place an order on Flower's photo-shop here (https://www.fsegames.eu/forum/index.php?topic=22778.0)

We know 1915 is done. Volk is just letting us mess around while she works on the next game. I'm pretty sure Volk is adding a lot of new game features and mechanics. So it'll be worth the wait.

The host tends to be biased towards himself if hes also playing even if he doesnt want to. Like for example idk, he gets a really good roll that with any other person they'd go full Saijan but the host doesnt want to look like hes just buffing himself so he'll make the bonus weaker for himself.
It just doesnt go well

Yeah Doc....there is a great deal of stuff wrong with your post. I went into detail on my post but the total number of men is historically correct. The Swiss military force stood at about ~250,000 men with a further ~200,000 men occupying supporting rolls like logistics and cooking etc.

I am assuming you are referring to the whole "scandal" about the education system. That's fair enough, but what is wrong with the military policies I took up?

It's just power play. Equipping all our men with pistols was not common place for a reason, it was expensive and time consuming. I could just go like "Yeah I've giving all my men new sub-machine guns" but that would be A. Impossible as there are no sub-machine guns and B. Pure power play.

I didn't say I would equip all men with pistols. I said all men who are a part of a combat unit. I will rephrase that so it will not be powerplay, I had no idea it is.

Edit: done.

tbh no I doubt it. It would progress too slowly, and dialogues are near to impossible :(
Yeah haven't played myself but i have seen it and they get completely in detail with quest.
Thats roll to dodge pretty much

Just to help some of you:

That moment when the GM rages because you're all researching to extreme measures, and you decide to post your continuation of it. ::)

So, countries in the Balkans and so forth just don't have the money for it. Research what you want, you have 0 cash to pay for it. The majority of these countries were ruled by conservative governments, all (the capitalists, the nobility) were against most of the industralisation during the early processes. You're far behind economically. Serbia is bankrupt and taking such massive loans from France it's digging its own grave, for example (read/look it up). Not to mention the war that you just had. War damages, economic relieves and bulstering. You're busy enough with just rebuilding your already non-existing industry.

The Ottoman Empire dissolving 50% of its irregular army and replacing it by far less professional soldiers was one of the only realistic actions I've read so far. As for countries like Greece, Bulgaria and so forth: No. You first need to get money. Ask another Western nation for a loan or so to bulster your economies to these measures, else it's not going to work for you. "Start the research of" How about "Start the construction of colleges and universities" first? :S Your major exports are...cattle...wheat... Change a farming society into a highly educated, arms-manufactring and researching, well-off economically nation over night? I don't think so.

Anyway, that's just my opinion and a very brief summary of some of the situations that are now going on in the BoP. I hope this helps some of you understand things a little more, that it clarifies a little. That's my ranting done.

Can someone list off all the nations that chose to disband all if not a large amount of their conscript armies? I know myself and Bulgaria have made it clear that we're keeping our conscription.

I meant to write 10 - 20,000,000.00 <-- 10 - 20 million.

What is he going to be able to do with 1 - 2 million xD on a national scare that would not be enough to help.

Also if it's anything to go by the IMF's loan to Greece is at 6% so.....5% is not bad nor is it good. It's an even and fair rate.

That's what I thought as well mate lol.
But look. Here's something I found while researching the Belgian coin:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin_Monetary_Union

Greece joined the Latin Monetary Union on the 10th of April, 1867. They were part of the same coin network-thingy until it disbanded.
Just in case it interests anyone to make it more realistic. Because Greece was after war, the value of coin was very low because of inflation and etc. (I am assuming).

You don't need an economy when you literally own the Swiss Banks

Which is also why none of you should probably invade switzerland, if europe loses its banks it'll plunge into chaos (unfortunately)

The Republic of France isn't concerned about the shrinking of the French army. We are pleased with the relatively large force, around about 2,000,000 men in Force but you have to remember that they are very well-trained (I have trained them now since the start of the game). I'd rather have a trained, smallish force than a small, untrained force.

Yes, the size of France before the war was 4,000,000 and after mobilisation is went to 8,000,000. And nobdody was trained for trench warfare.

Of highly skilled and seriously well equipped men. Though the Swiss had conscription, which you'd think would produce simply trained men, it actually had one of the best trained (Though seriously small) land forces in Europe at the time. With it being surround by all the changing alliances in Europe it needed to be ready encase it got attacked. The mountain defenses build along the German, Italian and Austria boarders as not to be scoffed at.

I've done some extensive research into my military capacity.

Which, is if you go against Switzerland it would mess you up considering they also trained to utilize the mountains. France was not so you indeed may EVENTUALLY win but, at what cost? Your 2 million will drop drastically low not to mention you would have to watch other borders and not fully commit to Switzerland.

And you have men with pickelhaubes. Don't think they're going to prove well in the battlefield. Sorry for roleplaying properly, if you want me to do I can begin researching spec ops uniforms.

And actually, the blue and red uniforms were the peacetime uniforms, which they chose to adapt during the war. So if I wanted to, I can adapt more suitable uniforms for when I actually declare war.

Just so people know the £ is not pounds in this case, it's the symbol used for the Ottoman Lira

It can also be the Italian Lira, basically nearlly all "liras" use/used this sign. The british pound is called lira in other countries, fx Portugal.

We call the British pound Lira in Greece too. I think it's the case in most Medi countries tbh.

Just a suggestion,

I remember that on Steam there were like one state (government) role-plays. As in, everybody gets either a nobility- or military title, and you all play together as if you were to rule over one country. The rest of the world would all be AI, normally controlled by a GM. The GM would also open problems that the cabinet would have to face, like wars, internal problems (rebellions, religious conflicts), endings of dynasties, assasinations, bombing of places, sabotage, corruption, and so forth. It was pretty cool at the time. Just wondered if anybody would be interested in that.

I had an idea like that. Every player had a different role in a government, like Marshal of the Army and Uniform Designers, etc etc. Then there would be the King, his advisors, and he'd commit decisions in the government and go to war like in a normal BoP. And yes, all of the other nations would be ran by the gamemaster. I decided that the idea would be too hard to implement into a forum game.

Title: Re: Forum Games Discussion - [WiP]
Post by: Rhen on December 28, 2015, 12:44:16 am
I guess it comes down to personal preferences. And I cannot be bothered to come up with fictional names, details, armies, settings, and so forth. Too much of a workload. Besides, it would take too long for people to get to know the setting, instead of just "Oh, Austria, 1850"

Well i take your whole post into consideration with what i will make your action be. I count somethings as a reflex other than an action thats why somethings don't get rolls. Like ducking is a reflex but to find cover and return fire is an action. Which he can't complete if he went to find cover and depends if you got out of sight/in cover are not x3

I've been thinking of a BoP where all the states of America are independent. It wouldn't be like BoP though, and wars would be much smaller and shorter meaning bigger expansion. Idk, what do you think about it?

Tbh, we really need a Napoleonic-era mod. We could start in 1792 (the start of the French Revolutionary Wars) when the French Republic declared war on the Austrians. Because really, every conflict in the Napoleonic era was because of the last war. I think it would be better to start in 1792.

Rule Reform!

I was thinking about the types of Artillery in the game, Heavy and Light and how you can focus on them. Essentially, light artillery as of the current rules is completely useless unless you're using the (obsolete) Mobile Warfare tactic. I want to make light artillery a choice in the game, and actually make people think about what artillery they want their nation to focus on.

Rule as of right now:

Heavy Artillery = Bonus with Trench Warfare (+5)
Light Artilery = Bonus with Mobile Warfare (+5)

My Proposals:

Heavy Artillery = Bonus vs Hard Targets (+5 when attacking/defending vs Entrenched, Tanks, Urban attacks)
Light Artillery = Bonus vs Soft Targets (+5 when attacking/defending vs Infantry, Light Vehicles, Non-entrenched enemies)

OR

Heavy Artillery = Bonus when defending (+5)
Light Artillery = Bonus when attacking (+5)

I am also debating changing the value of the Artillery bonus to maybe 10, and I am somewhat considering the same for machine guns. Hell I'm even considering changing the categories from Heavy & Light to, idk, Siege guns vs Field guns or Direct Fire vs Indirect Fire.

 Thoughts/Suggestions/Comments/Questions are welcome.

Title: Re: Forum Games Discussion

I like the idea but won't it be hard to keep track of who has what.

For example a single army of mine has a total of 552 pieces in total. This is split up into 3 Corps, 1 Mountain Division and Army Artillery. (This can all be seen on one of my very early Swiss posts)

1 Corps has 152 pieces in it, this split between the 4 Divisions of the Corps. These pieces are bog standard field pieces and howitzers, how would they be classed? Then my Mountain Division has 24 light pieces and the Army Artillery is 72 heavy siege pieces.

It all gets a bit much to see what kind of advantage the army has in terms of artillery focus and such.

Easy, pay attention and realise those details are irrelevant and I don't use them, and that the rules state you making that industrial decision means you focus on production and use of that type.

Thus giving you a bonus, just like Last game.

Windflower hates me and wanted to piss me off
Bondage wanted to do the same

You could split Germany in SS/NSDAP, so the Nazi government, and the Wehrmacht. You would have two players for one fac then what would make it much more interesting. E. g. the Wehrmacht player could plan to take over the government etc. etc.

So, I've got the idea of making a WW2 Roleplay where large nations, e. g. Soviet Union, 3rd Reich, USa etc. etc. are managed by two person: One has control over the army, the other one over politic and economy. Criticism/Ideas/Other useful stuff welcome!

Just out of curiosity: We could also make the 1939 Wargame something like, you know, just one historical year, with given alliances etc., and players are just playing the General Staffs of the large nations, e. g. the war with France 1940 can be played with having General Staffs of UK and France on the one and Germany + Italy on the other side. Each general could control e. g. one division or something, with a physical map as main map. What do you think?

I've made a poll for this, please think about it and inform me about what you want to play.

I have some ideas for forum games id like to share

Finukland (or something similar) remake

Age of Enlightenment 2.o

a Cold War/Cuban missile crisis BoP would be cool (players can align towards the Warsaw Pact or nato (Like the Axis and Allies kinda) or stay neutral and try keep earth from becoming a radioactive wasteland and/or forge a empire of there own.) This game would be heavily focused on political intrigue and strategic warfare

Pls. Start it from 3000 BC and then each update progress by like 5 years or something and then we can colonise another state or something idk.

3000bc and 5 years each update is waaay too long. in civ 5 you start at 4000bc and they progress like 100 years I think

Reminds me of a forum game I played on nation states, that one wasn't that fun because you wrote you're own battle and deteremined you're own results but if a good GM (like me) did this forum game it would be cool. Also we could not use the map of earth (Civ 5)

Exactly.

Me and Otto attempted to do this exact thing with a random map, player created nations, player created history, etc. We even had plans to send the rough sketch of the map to a cartography forum so we could have an actual geographically accurate and scale effective map to play on.

We dropped the idea because it was too much for the Both of us. And since we now know Stark can't even manage a Mafia game.... no chance.

Otto and I might pick up where we left off if it gets enough steam again, right now it's dead though.

The game would rely on players also committing alot to the game, like writing their own history etc etc. Personally I would be up for this game and I have a few ideas for the game too.

I could help. I have some ideas for the game..

1) There should be no research. An invention pops up somewhere, and eventually spreads everywhere else. Like fishing, or war ships or something like that. Countries that have an isolationism policy will obviously not get the latest inventions. Stuff like mobilisation or naval warfare will not be invented at first.

2) In Civ 5, there are clouds over the areas where you cannot see another enemy. You could have it so that when you meet another player, you can diplomatically get maps of the area from them and expand your knowledge of the known world. You can send out explorers to search the lands (or the sea, depending if you've got that invention) but they may be killed by neighbouring villages. Players will have to roleplay about nations who they can't see. The invention of maps will help.

3) Naming everything. That's right, you can name your provinces, regions and even propose a name for your continent and how big the continent is. There is no Europe, the Middle East, or resembling anything on the Earth. To achieve this, we will need a big map on which players can name their provinces.

4) I think that we should start somewhere at 4500 BC and then progress about 100 years per update. However, when we get closer to around 1000 BC we should slow down and when we are past that, we should slow down even more. The start of the game will just be about building up your nations and meeting neighbouring tribes.

5) Custom events. I believe that we should be able to do custom events, and choose our own culture. As long as the events aren't giving you an advantage over other players, it should be allowed in my opinion.

EDIT: I can also work on a map.

There are so many things that this forum game can bring.

BoP 1914 is nothing like Vic 2 though ???

Fog of war idea that you had Mclovin is kinda of stupid for a forum game. It will not work.

So how does creating your own nation work? Will like everyone just create an extremely op nation or would there be limits on certain things?

There should be a balance (big nation, poor tech) and it should make sense with its history and culture.

We were thinking about starting in 1920 and I wrote a small backstory thingy:
"BoP: Iropia

The year is 1920. The Great Empire of Iropia completly collapsed few years ago after many years of rebellions and disagreements between its people, giving birth to many new nations and ideas. Some nations wish to rebuild the Empire, some wish spread their ideologies, and some just wish to develop and grow their nation in peace.

"BoP: Iropia" is a Balance of Power (BoP) styled game and in an alternate Earth kind of planet, focusing on the continent of Iropia. Even though there are other continents around the continent of Iropia, other continents are mainly just for show and trading and maybe for late-game expanding. The starting year is 1920, when many nations were being ruled by dictators and facism and communism were being introduced."

I don't think that an alternate world would work in a BoP format. We have no knowledge of the nation, and I don't think that I would be able to roleplay with a nation that I don't know anything about. The idea seems good though, and I would enjoy it. If we could write like a backstory of our nation then I'd be fine with that. Also, I think that players should roleplay with their nations a bit, like creating your own events within your own country, as long as it isn't benefitting you.

A map wouldn't be a problem, it's probably the most easy thing about the forum game.

I was refering to the map, which is ripped from Victoria 2.

Not really, it would make sense in a game that started in ancient times. The fog of war would span across all of the existing nations and if you send out explorers more of the map is updated -- this would be removed for the rest of the game too, but, meh, you have to compromise these things. And it could work, it's never been tried before.

Calradia BoP?
Go play Native

As of now Otto and I are doing the framework of the new fantasy BoP: Iropia game. You know, the one where players create their own nations, culture, history and relations and whatnot, we plug it into the custom map and play from, say for example, the age of sail to the cold war.

As of now it is still in developmental stage, we have yet to fully come up with what we are going to do or if we are even going to attempt this project altogether.

However, if we are going to go forward with this, here is what we are currently doing:

-Map. Otto and I created an EXTREMELY rough draft of the map the game might be on. It is nothing but lines on white background with some minor details right now, however we plan on finalizing the map and then sending it either to some people I know who make good maps or going on a map-making forum and hiring a few of them to professionally make our map.

-Setting. We still don't really know what the setting would be. IE Medieval to "Napoleonic", Age of Sail to WW1, something to something, etc etc. You get the idea. Once we decide what technological time period the game will parallel at the start we'll start building the entire game around that and the future.

-Universe. There will be some backstory, hopefully. Not much, just enough to give the player created nations something to start with. A popular idea Otto and I were thinking was "Previously all-encompassing empire (Totally-Not-Romans.exe) has fallen. Few generations later this is the mess that is left. Create your nations, histories, cultures and whatnot". However we might change or edit depending on what we decide upon.

We're already in the process of making finalizing the rough draft of the map as well as finally agreeing upon what actually the game will be. Input is always welcome. This will take a long time obviously so Stark, McLovin, and Dazzer, please don't bug us to "finefinefine just start already!".

Other than that nothing to report. We won't be using a "Totally-Not-Eurasia" map, that's just too lazy. As of now to be honest the world looks like a potato.

Remember, input is appreciated, but don't adamantly demand a feature be in place with no explanation then rage because we ignored you.

As of now I guess I am leading this project, although I really hope Otto can pick up more of the project so I'm not burdened running 4 different BoPs.

I hope I won't have to GM but... I mean if nobody else wants to when it is time to start I guess I'll GM...

I haven't once nagged you about starting the game, and I don't appreciate being an example of this either. So please remove this as I find it highly offensive, Volk. And you just love ruining peoples ideas, dont you? I think Calradia BoP would be a good idea. As long as you have 6 players who are willing to take time to RP properly then it will work. Saying "go play native" isn't productive and doesn't help anyone. I could apply the same logic to your Iropia game and just say "go play EU4 with random nations" mod and a random world generator. By the way, I'd like to ask nicely if you could remove my name as I don't fit in with that category.

Btw, I think you should start 20 years after the break up of the Empire, so people can write their history.

I think that starting at the split of the Empire would be best. It would be interesting how the self-declared states would side with the Empire or wage war against them. It would also give players a chance to develop relationships with other nations.

Title: Re: Forum Games: Announcements, Discussion, and Resolutions Board
Post by: Volk on March 20, 2016, 08:42:04 pm
So I've updated this thread, feel free to go look.

I've spoken to Duuring as well as the other big GMs, Bravescot, Cazasar, and OttoFIN. We decided to form a sort of "GM Board" to help keep this place running well. All we'll do is set official goals and plans for the future of Forum Games, example "I think we need more RtDs. Vote?" *Majority Yes* "Alright, by September we want at least 2 more RtDs!"

It'll help clean this place up, as well as give future new GMs a place to look for guidance. In the future, we might have to create guidelines for Forum Games, which is where this board will be used also. In the inevitable future, we may also have to deal with toxic players, such as "We ban Y from official forum games for 2 weeks" although I really don't like it. It should be done sparingly and with majority player support, not just the will of the GMs.

It'll also be a place where we can meet and start planning out development of more forum games together, so there's that. It's not much of a change, just think of it as Forum Game CRs except no big 63e conspiracy, or a place where we can all say "we think we need more games!"

It starts immediately, though I really have nothing to input right now. Better to have it now and continue.

I think a good idea would be an interactive government thingy. One player would play as the Head of State, the others as members of the council and dictate how the country plays out. To make it more interesting, players could create their own characters and negotiate to others through letters. A good idea for this, I think, would be the French Revolution. The game would pass every week and the GM would make announcements (for example the formation of the National Assembley), among other things. I think that would have a lot of potential, think of all the other situations that could happen.

As I was writing update I realized many pieces were not in place relative to what was supposed to happen. A lot of people didn't get to join some wars, do some things, enter alliances etc before I locked it.

Meh. People complained about me locking the thread at a critical moment. Then when I unlock it they don't do what they complained to me about.

What can you do

Edit: Alrighty, I've given more than enough time for people to do their thing. Relocking and going to power through the update. If you didn't get to join wars or alliances or do public actions by now too bad.

Gg, now Bravescot is abusing his power. Stark wants liberation of Ireland, and whether or not he supports the IRA, you cannot ban his free speech. Banning him from all forum games wouldn't achieve anything, it wouldn't stop the IRA, it wouldn't stop him supporting the IRA.

The reason I banned you for supporting the IRA is also linked to you own actions.

You were banned from these forums for
Quote
PM'ing a fellow user that he found it good to hear the user's relatives were murdered.

I'm sure most people have worked it out already but if you honestly think I'm going to allow you to carry on anymore after you said you were glad to hear my relatives had been blown up by the IRA then you have another thing coming. You should feel lucky that I allowed you to even partaken in just a couple rounds of mafia before I moved against you.

So as far as I see it you're the one who should be banned as you've shown that you support the IRA in all their actions inducing their acts of terror.

I will not unblock you. What you did should have gotten you permanently banned. That it only got you 30 days when spoiling star wars got 60 days really destroyed my faith in the moderating team. So now I am doing what I can to punish you for your actions, starting by banning you from any game I host.

they were talking about ww1ish era. So that's what I went off.

And my "finished" nation is just me brainstorming. I made a google doc and wrote down an idea for my nation. It's as basic as it gets. Just some bullet points. That's it. Can't really do anything else until we know more info.

Albania - Yugoslavia (Montenegro) border is wrong along with the Russian - Finnish one as the winter war hasn't yet occur, also the lake in Montenegro should be removed as it doesn't cover a forth of Montenegro.

EDIT: Italy is controlling Nice when it belongs to France, part of the Danube province is under the control of Romania but belongs to Yugoslavia.

I knew Forum Games died but... seriously?

I've checked the most "recent" thread regarding what game should be next and from that poll it appears a Medieval BoP has won. However it is old. So 2 things:

-Roll Call: Who's alive here?
-Repoll: Put in suggestions and I will make a new poll on this thread.

I'm closing this poll considering there is a clear Top-3 group while all the other choices are behind a fair amount. The next poll will be a runoff between the top 3. In no particular order: Napoleonic BoP, WW2 BoP, Victorian Era BoP, & American Civil War BoP.

Here are the results of the first poll
Spoiler
Medieval: 3
Napoleonic: 6
WW1: 3
WW2: 7
Victorian: 8
Enlightenment: 2
Historical Crisis: 2
Political: 2
American Civil War: 6
Interwar: 3
Civil Wars & Revolutions: 3
Other: 2 (30 Years War: 1)

[close]

Next poll will be the aforementioned options. You will have 4 votes & will be given 4 options. I would like that each person votes for the settings they'd be willing to play in, however if you have a specific favorite era you want to play feel free to vote for only 1. I am more concerned with finding the ones people *don't* want to play (I personally am rooting for Victorian, however Napoleonic is a fantastic choice as well considering we've never really played Napoleonic BoP for real). I will leave poll up for about 24 hours, so please vote within that time frame. Thanks

I was thinking start of War of the Third Coalition. If earlier start is required we could start right after Napoleon is crowned Emperor, which is about December 1804. Too early and things might get a bit messed up.

I'm going to call it here. It has been 24 hours. Sorry if anybody didn't get to vote or if your favorite setting lost; the winner of the poll will 99% for sure be the next BoP UNLESS you all change your mind. We should be open to all discussion if conflicts arise regarding the next BoP.

The winner of the poll and our next BoP is: the Napoleonic Era! I personally was kind of rooting for Victorian Era, however we've never done a Napoleonic BoP for longer than a week. I'm pretty excited for it.

Here are the results for future reference:
Spoiler
Napoleonic BoP 7 (30.4%)
WW2 BoP 4 (17.4%)
Victoria BoP 6 (26.1%)
American Civil War 6 (26.1%)
Total Members Voted: 14

I will begin developing a very small set of rules and mechanics for the upcoming BoP (no technology, no huge systems). I'll will change the thread immediately and begin writing ASAP; player input, advice, complaints, etc and transparency during development are all welcome. I've also taken the liberty of making an easy and simple Non-BoP game for everyone to get back into the rhythm of Forum Games. I'll be running it for the first game or so (which is extremely easy considering the game is dictated 99% solely by the players) while I develop BoP: Napoleonic Wars. I'm going to need a map and header so if anyone's interested please tell me. I'll also make an OOC thread for the new BoP. I reiterate that any and all comments, advice, requests etc are welcome; thank you in advance.

Idea 1
I was thinking about the current state of Forum Games & thought about how we always have 1-2 Forum games that go on for months before being burnt out while other BoP's never see the light of day. I kind of want to fix that problem before it occurs again later.

I came up with the idea of maybe segmenting somehow the forum games so that 1 Forum Game & GM can work for a certain time up to a certain point (Say for example in Enlightenment terms, game runs from 1450 to 1500 or 1550). At that point, the Game pauses to allow the GM to take a break while another game and GM can run (Say in 1914 terms, 1914 to 1920). Then that game pauses and the previous game is resumed.

This would allow games to remain alive for longer periods of time & help prevent prospective GM's from getting burnt out very quickly. It would also allow more BoP's & non-BoP games to be done by more people as well as keep topics & eras from growing stale.

However, the break obv might cause trouble for some players who may be embroiled in a war or crisis. The break might also cause people to forget whatvexactly was going on & who was doing what, as well as not allow new ideas to be done until the game is resumed which may cause premature deaths of Forum Games.

This is just an idea I had. I want to know what you guys think.
[close]

Idea 2
Another idea I thought of is an idea for another BoP. A medieval one at that. Asturias vs Umayyad Sultanate (aka Caliphate of Cordoba). Separated into 2 teams (Christian Asturias & Muslim Umayyads) with 1 player as king and teammates as vassals (unless people choose to try to make their own kingdom/duchies?). To win one side has to annex all of the Iberian Peninsula from the other (or maybe certain key regions) either diplomatically, by conquest or marriage etc.

The other idea was a Crusades BoP. For example the first Crusade, with the Byzantines, the Genoans, the crusader armies led by the different men etc. Players might either play a nation (like Byzantium) or play as a character with their crusader army while other(s) play as the different muslim caliphates.
[close]

Obv these ideas are not fleshed out. I just thought of them & wanted to put them onto here for discussion.

I really like the Crusade idea.
And the idea about refreshing forum games, I think the rotation is smart, but will come when it is more peaceful in the world, I for example would find it hard to continue a game if it was paused just when I was in a crisis.

If anyone is interested or has any questions, send me a message in Steam https://steamcommunity.com/id/OttoFIN We got only 2 players right now, so we're in need of players.
Title: Re: Forum Games: Announcements, Discussion, and Resolutions Board
Post by: Volk on October 24, 2016, 02:42:24 am
So I was thinking about Forum Games and how some games are appealing for different reasons, and I started to think about why exactly some games are appealing. One thought I had in my head was "What exactly is the appeal of a Medieval era / Middle Ages game?". I didn't think about it negatively, it was more of a broad thought. Like for example, some of the appealing facets of a WW2 game are the very tumultuous history of the time and the incomprehensible scale of the war, with millions and millions of people all over the world fighting, industries chugging out products like never before, etc. It's appealing because a player has the chance to paint the whole world their color, alter history in some way by expanding an ideology, change the result of the war, etc. Or a Colonial Era game, where the appeal is the excitement of exploring a brand new world, competing with other players for natural resources, subjugating natives and living out the thrills of imperialism (and getting a kick out of watching the world turn your color). A Napoleon game, also for example, has the appeal of such an interesting period of history, larger than life characters, and fascinating military tactics and battles. The appeals of different games, whether enlightenment, Roman, Greek, Pike and Shot, etc also draw people for different reasons just like the time periods stated above.

The question is asked then, again not in a negative way, what is the appeal of a Medieval era game exactly? Is it the personal aspect of the game, as in intrigues and royal houses and claims, where you can play specific characters and gain titles and vassals and everything personal? Is it the tactics and warfare of the time period, as in swords and spears and bows and extremely heavy cavalry that makes it appeal to people? What exactly is it?

I was thinking about this because I kept thinking about not only how certain games appeal to certain people for certain reasons, but I was also wondering of the reasons why they *didn't* appeal. For example, a person really interested in trade and mercantilism and everything revolving around economics, products, goods etc would love a colonial game where they can win by expertly controlling the supply of goods and get rich, but would absolutely hate say a Classical era Greek game where trade isn't a major factor at all. Or someone who wants to create a united Germany or try to create a nation under a different ideology would love a Victorian Era or WW1 game, but wouldn't exactly be up for an Enlightenment game where nationalism and all the other -ism's haven't been created yet. I myself actually like the military aspects of Napoleon for example, where it's huge land armies fighting huge pitched battles that determine the fates of nations, which wouldn't exactly go well with say a Classical game, where real victories in wars happen from sieges and conquering lands, or a WW2 game where it's large scale operations undertaken over weeks and months, with attacks and counterattacks and divisions everywhere spread out fighting as opposed to Massive Army A clashes with Massive Army B. Would there ever be a "perfect" BoP that appeals to everyone?

Just a thought I had. Feel free to offer your own opinions, thoughts, comments etc. Thanks in advance.

I think it mainly goes down to interest in the historical era.
I for example don't really like the Napoleonic Wars era that much, and I can't really explain why. Maybe because it right in between the times when technology started advancing, and the bloodshed that are the renaissance/medieval eras. I don't know though.

It's like kind of the indecisive era for me. Maybe because I don't know much of it.
That's why I would enjoy a Victorian era and above game and Enlightenment era and below that.

Good job referring to medieval BoP's as Enlightenment, that's a juicy worm on a sharp hook right there.

The reason why Enlightenment Era appeals to some people is the Enlightenment aspect of it; something AoE was never allowed to reach. It's not that the Enlightenment didn't have those things, like dictatorships beyond absolute monarchies, capitalism, socialism, etc., but it was the Enlightenment when the earliest forms of those ideologies began to emerge. It's the excitement of "this is a period of huge, radical transformation in the world, in many different forms," and it's the appeal of "how will I be able to change that?" that appeals to some people, and it's quite a unique era because nothing is set in stone yet. You could change the very ideology of democracy to your liking before the United States or France even reaches that point yet. You could say "fuck it" to western military structure and invest in Chinese firelances, reshaping the evolution of gunpowder weaponry in Europe. And what is the Enlightenment without radical changes to religion, something we hadn't even started doing in AoE? I, personally, would have embraced the Tengri overlords of the Golden Horde and converted Switzerland into a land of horse-riding nomads. Though, perhaps that's a sillier take on it, you could just play out the advancements of Europe as we know it.

But all of that isn't really that relevant. It wasn't necessarily an era, but the execution. AoE was at least really appealing to me because of the lack of limitations on how you could play the game, which opened it up for a number of playstyles you don't normally see in BoPs which, naturally, people just didn't really take advantage of. And beyond that, there was a sense of roleplaying and character/nation/world building in AoE that you simply do not see in other BoPs, and that is partially thanks to the era, where newer ideas are coming in, but limitations on subterfuge, importance of nobility and thus the relevance of marriages, and power of single, monarchical rulers, still give it a no-rules, dicks-out, free-for-all that you don't tend to see as much in later time periods, and that all really appealed to me personally. Plus, if your army has a thousand men, things are way more intense and important to plan than if you have a billion. I cite the Black Army of Hungary as one of the types of things you wouldn't tend to see in other times, but AoE was the type of game to allow the ruler of Hungary or any other nation with their own armies to preserve their elite units and extend their importance beyond their historical counterparts, getting rid of the need for cheap, ordinary mercenaries. The appeal of setting up units of mercenaries that fly the flag of a nation and yet serve any other nation not opposed to them also grabbed me.

Plus I had to study the Enlightenment for like two months so I know it fairly well.

By the way, don't dis Classical Greek trade, that's pretty much all they did when there weren't active wars. It's in their blood, just look at the Mycenaeans.

Something that I found kinda unappealing was at the beginning of every bop (exception is Enlightenment) we did, there was a war. And you were either with one side or you were with the other side. The Napoleonic wars bop is a pretty good example of that. A medieval bop would probably just be at a random time and you wouldn't have to choose a side right away

Also I just like swords and bows. I think their cool

Yeah that is somewhat of a problem. Day 1 wars I mean. Then again, it's a given when you make your BoP centered around a particular war like WW1 or wars like the Napoleonic Wars. Other period games though, yeah Day 1 wars shouldn't happen.

Swords and bows are indeed cool. Would that be reason enough to start and manage a Medieval/Middle Ages BoP though?  ??? Or if it ever started, to continue playing?

I don't remember where, but there used to be a single country sort of role-play. People would just have an in-game character in one country and struggle for power within that country (mostly in a parliament). Elections, results, etc. are controlled through dice rolls. I heard it's easier to manage and might make for a nice change, if that's what people are looking for?

That was the one Duuring had. It was at the veeeery bottom of the Forum Games section until he deleted a whole bunch of stuff. You could ask him to repost and see again?

Maybe WWI Iropia or Estria. We'll be able to get updates often if we have 2 hosts and maybe some people volunteering to write battles etc. What we need is a simple not overly complicated system.

Why don't you want to play a WWI forum game? I'm curious.

If anyone has any mechanics for a forum game, type it here. I personally would want to host a fantasy BoP maybe in napoleonic era or WWI.

Simply I've never been interested in it. I've been always finding history of modern wars much more boring than earlier times. Because of that I know almost nothing about this period (even though lately I watched documentary about WW1 and it was quite interesting). It's just my personal preference, nothing more ;)

But I would gladly play early medieval or antiquity game (Trojan War would be cool, though I'm aware that lack of knowledge would be problem). Also science fiction BoP is my little wet dream, but it would terribly difficult to host I believe. On the other hand I would vote against setting in player-created world (like Iropia or Estia) - such games are in most cases terribly incoherent and history of world makes no much sense. Despite that, of course, as I've said, I'll play anything set before 1850, be it historical of fantasy.

Science Fiction is actually....great! No bloody history discussions!

I really like that! Depending on how many other people like this idea and who is willing to help me that sounds like something I would host.

Problem is, without history, we have no way to tell what players can do and what they cannot. We know how many men England could field in 1200s or 1900s. But we have no idea how many "Destiny" class interstellar destroyers can Yliria Confederacy field. So massive set of rules and mechanics would be needed to make it work in logical way - rules concerning economy, warfare, society, etc. And of course GMs work to make world coherent would be huge too - after all it's SCIENCE fiction. But if you say you could make it work, you have my sword of course.

Well we had a BoP once were players created Nations on their own, and that looked pretty promising and merely failed due to the fact that the GM lost interest.

I think its pretty much the same here. Just give the Players guidelines in wich they create their...whatever to make it balanced, always have a last saying etc etc

I'm planning to revive good old BoP: 1914 and have gotten some ideas from HoI IV like Political Power. Does anyone have any ideas for industry and military unit mechanics?

Edit: I'm currently making a simple "industry map". It's basically show how many industry points each region has. Industry points will help you build infantry units and upkeep them and some other stuff probably. I'm still open to suggestions, I'm still trying to invent good military, stability and research mechanics.

I'm still working on Europe and trying to make the industry points realistic: https://i.gyazo.com/79d0e602f15bb7cf10514287cf7f371c.png
