My view on specialty roles and balancing with line infantry is you should keep a good ratio of the units dependent on the size of the linebattle. Tonight for instance, we had roughly 80v80 the whole night. I would make sure at least 60% of each faction is line infantry. In tonight's case of numbers, that would leave ~32 slots for non line infantry roles. Split among the 3 roles that should be 12 cav, 12 skirms, and 8 artillery. This would be enough for arty to have a nearly a full compliment, but be short 2 guards in this case. Should we fall to a 60v60 though, we would only have 24 special slots open with this ratio, leaving only enough for 10 cav, 10 skirms and 4 arty, meaning arty should have only one cannon or howitzer and one or two guards. I find keeping the ratios like this, especially limiting the artillery in lower attendance, is the best way to maintain balance. While I don't like camping and delaying the end of the round either, I don't think having no sappers will help much. Having very low sapper build points, low enough to really only make it feasible for arty to build some minor defenses, is the best way to avoid base building/camping. If you really want to help move things along, I would suggest a 20-25 minute time limit per round, in conjunction with a rule either saying less than 8 men or so remaining on a side no more artillery can fire, or if one side has an advantage in numbers and does not start to expedite the end of the round before the time runs out, their team will be considered the loser of the battle.
Food for thought.
