Other Games / Magic the Gathering
« on: November 19, 2017, 08:52:46 pm »
Noticed there was no thread for Magic. Anyone play? What formats? What medium (irl, Online, Duels/Arena)?

I got into it recently, met some cool people at my college as a result. I'm trying to get into Standard as it's relatively cheap and I can avoid insane combos, but I'm keeping my eye out for good EDH/Commander cards when I can get them for cheap.

Off Topic / Audio input/output setups
« on: August 13, 2017, 07:34:12 am »
Post your headphones and mics and anything else that's apart of your setup, and be sure to say if you recommend them to others or not. I'm using Superlux HD668B headphones, which are pretty great sounding though slightly uncomfortable, and a Blue Snowball mic since I was on a low, low budget when I bought it.

Anyone have any experience using compressors? I'd like to get a physical one but want to test it out with a virtual first, but I don't really know where to begin.

Forum Games / New BoP?
« on: August 02, 2017, 10:18:25 pm »
We haven't had one in a while. I think it's safe to say which people are or aren't reliable hosts. Anyone with a good track record of hosting games interested in starting one, or is this board just going to die?

I thought about starting a Witcher, Warhammer Fantasy, Game of Thrones (likely one set before Aegon's Conquest though), Warband (that'd be put on Taleworlds though, probably), 1444 continuation or redo (not necessarily the same date), or something else. Any interest for any of these? Many of them would be a lot of work for me, so if you're really looking forward to any of them, do offer help if you can give it.

Forum Games / Interest for a new Enlightenment-era BoP?
« on: October 15, 2016, 07:58:07 pm »
I've been considering if opening a new late medieval/early gunpowder BoP would be worth it. But before that happens, I'd like to gauge with the people who had played AoE or other similar BoPs how much interest they might have. Here's some of the ideas I've had for a new game:

- AI nations and units/armies would receive a slightly reduced success in mustering and combat rolls, meaning player controlled nations will have a slight advantage overy the AI. This allows players to take on ambitions that may otherwise be limited, but still give them a challenge in the process.

- Addition of governor roles in larger nations. For prime example, if the game started in 1650, Spanish Habsburgs would own Belgium, Naples, Sardinia, Milan, and some of Burgundy. However, those territories outside of Spain proper can be governed by players, who can then separate from the crown if they play their cards right, potentially taking other lands in the process.

- Expanding on the point above, I would like to see the addition of a Claims system. If you're not familiar with Paradox strategy games, a Claim is something you need in order to declare a war. However, a Claim in a BoP like this would act a bit different. There are three types of Claims; de jure, inheritence, and pacification. De jure claims include anything your active nation or character has a "national right" to. For instance, Prussia would have the de jure right to lands immediately between Brandenburg and Danzig (citations needed) that they do not already own. In the case of inheritence claims, a prominent member of the Habsburg dynasty could attempt to claim the Austrian or Spanish lands they don't already control, or even take the seat of the crumbling Holy Roman Empire. This can also be smaller, like one ruler wishing to take the lands their recently made dead relative once possessed. And finally, pacification claims can be gained by a nation that borders another nation that has declared a serious and unjustified war on another nation. While this type if claim does not yield the most reward in terms of land, it might help better the relations between your nation and your neighbors if you manage to muzzle a threatening nation. Of course, you don't need a claim to declare a war, but declaring wars without a claim may give a pacification claim to one or two of your powerful neighbors. Additionally, if you have a claim and press it, neighbors that would oppose that war and normally join in against you are unable to. To help start wars, each player can attempt once per year to fabricate a claim, typically with a low success rate.

- The Ottomans: Europe had sweated and bled over the Ottomans plans for controlling Europe, and for the Slavs, Germans, and Italians it was a big issue. In order to balance the game and control how nations would behave, I imagine the Ottoman Empire to be controlled by the AI, following events at certain times and receiving rolls similarly to how other AI nations would, meaning the Ottomans will likely win many battles and even wars at the start, but the more players involved in fighting against them, the bigger the odds are of them actually stopping it.

- Expansion on economy and technology. While not as complicated as it may seem at first, these two additions could add a lot towards a BoP. Simply put, each province will start with a set economic rating based on their real life equivalent's economy at the time. Generally, cities generate a lot of revenue, but require a siege to take (meaning the city will recieve a debuff if taken), while farmlands are required for large armies and development projects (like roads, bridges, etc.), and castles are typically an economic drain but obviously add to defense of a provence. A provence can have only one city if big enough, and up to five or so castles depending on its size, but the more defense there is, the more food and money the owner needs. A nations overall yearly wealth is shown in this equation: Treasury = (Average of all income sources - Costs for armies/construction) + Previous year's treasury. While that's how to conduct the wealth, the whole system would be a pretty simplified system until an exact amount of money is needed. For reference, in AoE, a nation like Sweden or even Venice wouldn't have to be closely tracked, but a nation like France or Switzerland would often need to be, as they had more investments being made in infrastructure, technology, and military improvement. The majority of the time, though, it will just be educated estimations. Better economies mean fuller treasuries, which means a number of things, including the affordability of technological advancements. The majority of these come in the form of military improvements, like better firearms and artillery and equipment for horseriding, but others include better roads and sturdier walls. Some can even be both; improving your fleet to both fight well and sail quickly for trade can improve both aspects (Galleons and Fluyts for example).

Of course, this seems way more complicated than other BoPs, but it would only be as in depth and complicated as an individual wants to play it. Let me know what you guys think.

At the moment I'm most excited for the new Game of Thrones season and possibly book not long from now this year, and the new Hearthstone expansion coming up next month. What are you looking forward to? Any games, movies, shows?

Other Games / Nationstates
« on: October 30, 2015, 02:22:09 am »
Nationstates is a completely free-to-play browser game created Max Barry, author of a few decent books including Lexicon. It puts the player in the place of a government office, which is way too broad to even say. Design and rule your nation through passing legislation every day in order to shape the socio-economic build and political power that you possess over your nation. Go to 'war' with other nations; a system that lets you compare your nations with others and gain points for doing so, while bringing no negative effects  to either nation, allowing for an easy-to-progress environment for players. Activity isn't that demanding, as you can set how many issues (situations that require legislation reform, or not) you would like to receive and whether you want them on week days, weekend days, or both, with a maximum of two every single day. With special events, like a yearly zombie apocalypse (happy Halloween!), Nationstates tries to keep itself interesting to spice up your visits.

Making this post because I wanted to know if anyone else on here plays and I'm sure there's people on here who this would fit right up their alley. With all the BoP's on the forum at least a couple of people would have some interest in it. If anything, it allows someone to experiment with "what if" scenarios by playing around with variables. For a little while into the game, options seem pretty limited, but as you grow things start to change, issues become more interesting, and you have more of a reason to visit the world's forum; because you're big and scary.

Community / Nostalgic Stuff That Makes You Laugh
« on: September 24, 2015, 06:00:46 am »
Ever find something on your computer or something that you remember from your time in NW and it makes you stop and laugh? I'm finding a bunch of that lately. Here's something for instance that I think a member made back in the day but I can't understand the context.

Community / What is NW for you?
« on: August 03, 2015, 03:36:18 am »
Napoleonic Wars is over three years old now, and for the people from Mount & Musket, they've been here even longer. There have been tons of regiments to rise and fall throughout NW's time so far, and many notable players joining and leaving the game. It's developed differently for many people; we can look back at regiments like the BAB and FH and others who put professionalism and winning aside to have good fun, we can look back at regiments like Tavington's 91st, 92nd, and 33rd, that provided both disciplined events but also a pretty large array of fun moments, and we can look back at regiments like the 9y and 12th (and Tavington's 91st), that really capitalized on the competitive scene of the game.

For a game this old and weathered (I for one still get super nostalgic with my old Colonel over my first real regiment back in 2012), it's a complicated topic for some to explain why they're still playing. But for those who know why, feel free to share why.

And where avoidable, please avoid saying the same old "it's ruined my life" or "im addicted" shit.

Off Topic / Looking for someone good at photoshop/gimp/whatever
« on: July 27, 2015, 01:08:42 am »
Hello! So I'll get right to it. I don't have photoshop, and the tool I use,, is not necessarily top quality for what I need done. I'm looking to upgrade some aspect of my thread where I do not have a strong-suit: text.

I need something in this style (as close as possible is preferable, unless you have something that works better):

For each of the other sub-headers here:

Ranks, Roster, Recruitment (please have it say Joining instead), and Media. If you can't make it uncanny to the History one, I request you redo that one, too, just to make it uniform. :)

Also, I'd like to specifically request that it be in some sort of Yellow + Light Blue or perhaps Red theme (or a combination?), like the one already done is. Or just what would look best.

Thank you, and though I fully understand how work for free shouldn't be expected to be done quickly (because I've done a massive amount of work for free in image editing myself), I'd like it to be done within a week, because of the amount of time spent waiting already. But it's fine if it takes longer to get around to. ;)

Other Games / Viking Conquest: Reforged Edition Opinions
« on: July 26, 2015, 07:27:46 pm »
So pretty recently, Viking Conquest got a 2.0-styled update, supposedly being a direct and free upgrade for those who already owned it prior. It adds a lot to a heavily bugfixed game, including a lot of SP and some MP features. Given that the game now is a much more competent version of what came out months ago, what are your opinions on it? More worth playing now? Would you like to see a MP side come back in full strength?
