Welcome to the Battle For Europe Line Only Event Thread! This weekly event will be hosted on Saturdays at 8:00pm EST. Due to the nature of the event, no signups will be required for specialty units etc. Regiment leaders will be invited to a steam chat group in order to calculate attendance and balance the teams. Currently, we are looking for Admins to help organize the event. We are also accepting regiments to join in to fill up the space, as we hope to get this event very populated. As for the nature of the event, we'd like for our linebattles to be very fast paced and combat intensive. We discourage "camping", as most of our maps will be on the flat side. As for the future, we are looking into doing a historical battle once every two months for fun. Please thoroughly read the rules below before attending!

ENLIST TODAY
THE 3rd EAST KENT REGIMENT OF FOOT

Seeking any and all able bodied men for immediate enlistment under CAPTAIN LAWRENCE HEMMINGS
Enlistment Stations in the City of Kent.

TAKE THE KING'S SHILLING  -  FOR KING AND COUNTRY.
__________________________________________________________________________________________

The 3rd East Kent Regiment of Foot was established in June of 2018. With over a year of Hiatus, the regiment is ready to announce a return the North American Napoleonic Wars scene. The 3rd pride's itself on being extremely discipline, very skilled in melee comabt, and organized as a collective unit. For the immediate future, the regiment plans on attending Saturday and Sunday events, as well as a possible weekly training. Trainings will focus on formations and most importantly melee and groupfighting. During events, the 3rd will be quite discipline, but in a fun way for all of our members to enjoy. Our discipline and skill will allow us to be competitive on the field as well as with each other in melee competitions. Members who exceed at melee or shooting will be up for various medals and awards. The third will also use historical names in order to represent the historical 3rd regiment to the best of our ability. We wish to carry on the name of the 3rd East Kent with pride and honor. We are accepting players of all skill levels that are willing to mature and have fun with the regiment.

If you are interested in enlisting, please add the regiment contact officer and company Ensign,  Rutger Muller, on steam. We will get in touch with you shortly.

Napoleonic Wars

In the summer of this year (1807) Bonaparte demanded that the ports of Portugal should be shut against British shipping, and other measures were adopted injurious to British commerce, and in violation of existing treaties; and soon afterwards a French army commanded by Marshal Junot, marched into Portugal, with the object, ostensibly of enforcing obedience to Bonaparte's mandate, but, in reality, to seize and imprison the royal family of Portugal, that a division of that kingdom might be made among other persons, to suit the interests of Bonaparte. While negotiations were pending between the courts of France and Portugal relating to the measures against British commerce, the first battalion of the BUFFS embarked at Cork, upwards of a thousand strong, for America; but was afterwards placed, with other troops, under the orders of Brigadier-General Beresford.

The fleet did not, however, sail until after the royal family of Portugal, being intimidated by the approach of the French army to Lisbon, had embarked in vessels in the river Tagus and sailed, under the protection of a British naval force, for the Brazils; the expedition then proceeded to the Portuguese island of Madeira, which surrendered and Brigadier-General Beresford assumed the powers of governor; but the former governor was subsequently restored; and the island being committed to the protection of the British troops until the conclusion of a general peace, Brigadier-General Beresford remained in command of the troops; the BUFFS were landed on the island on the 25th of December, and they remained there nearly eight months. The BUFFS performed a particularly distinguished part in this daring exploit, and their gallantry has been rewarded with the royal permission to have the word "DOURO" inscribed on their colours. The Buffs In The Battle Of Albuera : 1811

The Buffs Under Attack In The Pyranees: 1813,1814 -1815

In Canada The Buffs lost in the several affairs with the enemy, Captain (Brevet Lieut. Colonel) James Willington, Ensign John Chapman, and two rank and file killed; also Lieutenants Kingsbury, West, Benson, and Home, with one sergeant and thirty-four rank and file wounded. The Battalion remained in Lower Canada during the winter of 1814, and the succeeding spring; in which time a treaty of peace was concluded with the Americans; and part of the forces being withdrawn from Canada, the BUFFS embarked from Quebec on the 4th of June, 1815, for Europe." In this year the second battalion was disbanded. The early commanders of the regiment before 1665 were Thomas Morgan, Sir John Norris, Robert, Earl of Leicester; Sir Francis Vere:Horace Lord Vere, Baron of Tilbury; Sir John Ogle; Sir Charles Morgan; Henry, Earl of Oxford; Robert, Earl of Oxford; Aubrey, Earl of Oxford; John Cromwell. After that date, perhaps the most noted men were Sir Walter Vane, 1668; Charles Churchill, 1688; John, Duke of Argyll, 1707; but amongst such a distinguished list of names as that of the commanders consists of, it is invidious to pick one out before another."

'VAE VICTIS'

The regiment embarked for North America in April 1776. During the journey some of the troops of the Cameron clan mutinied when they heard they would not be commanded by Captain Cameron of Lochiel but settled down when they heard that their commander was Captain Cameron of Fassifern. The ship arrived in New York City in July 1776 and the regiment was attacked by American troops on arrival at Boston Harbor.

The 71st Regiment of Foot joined General William Howe at Staten Island and was order into combat almost immediately. The grenadiers were commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Charles Stewart and the other companies were placed under the command of Brigadier Sir William Erskine. The regiment first saw action at the Battle of Long Island in August 1776; the British forces were successful and only three soldiers from the regiment were killed and only 11 wounded.

The next operation for the 71st Regiment was at the Battle of Fort Washington in November 1776 followed by the Battle of Fort Lee later that month. The regiment went on to take part in the Philadelphia Campaign and saw action at the Battle of Brandywine in September 1777. A detachment of 71st Regiment under Captain Colin MacKenzie supported General John Burgoyne's operations along the Hudson River including the capture of Forts Clinton and Montgomery in October 1777.

The regiment also took part in actions in the Southern theatre and fought under Lieutenant-Colonel Archibald Campbell at the Capture of Savannah in December 1778. At Savannah, Campbell ordered Sir James Baird to take a group of infantry and flank the Americans, while he arrayed his troops just out of view: the Americans were unaware they had been flanked, were routed and abandoned the city. The regiment, now under the command of Lieutenant Colonel John Maitland, went on take part in the Battle of Brier Creek in March 1779; at Brier Creek the 1st Battalion of the regiment attacked the Americans at the front while the 2nd Battalion attacked them from the rear: again the Americans were routed.

After that the regiment took part in the Siege of Savannah in September 1779: during the this action the regiment successfully defended the city. The regiment was also present at the Siege of Charleston in March 1780, the Battle of Camden in August 1780 and the Battle of Cowpens in January 1781. It next fought at the Battle of Guilford Court House in March 1781 where one officer of the 71st Regiment claimed that "one half of the Highlanders dropped on that spot." The regiment's last action was at the Siege of Yorktown in September 1781.

The Guards were organised in two brigades in the 1st Division. The 1st Brigade was made up of the 2nd and 3rd Battalions of the 1st Guards, and the 2nd Brigade consisted of Coldstreamers and Scots Guards. Major-General Peregrine Maitland commanded the 1st Guards Brigade whose strength was: 2/1st Guards, 29 officers and 752 men, and 3/1st Guards, 29 officers and 818 men. Each battalion had about 40 sergeants and 20 drummers. The allies retained control of Quatre Bras but Blucher's Prussians had been hit hard at Ligny and forced to withdraw. The following day was spent withdrawing to Mont St Jean. There was a cavalry battle at Genappe but the Foot Guards were not involved. The Light Companies of both Guards Brigades, under Lord Saltoun, were ordered to secure the Chateau of Hougoumont while the rest of the Guards took up positions behind Hougoumont.

Battle of Waterloo 18th June- The actual battle of Waterloo was fought between 72,000 of Napoleon's French troops and 68,000 allied troops under Wellington. Blucher's Prussian army did not arrive until it was almost all over.

Lord Saltoun commanded the two Light Companies of the 1st Guards who were ordered to hold the garden and orchard of the chateau while the other two Light Companies of the Coldstream and Scots Guards were commanded by Lt-Col James Macdonnell, responsible for the buildings. The night had been spent by all of these men busily fortifying the buildings ready for an attack early on the 18th. But Napoleon delayed his advance on the allies so the first attack did not happen until 1100 hrs. The 1st Guards held the orchard but the brunt of the attack was taken by the Coldstream and Scots Guards who fought with great heroism all afternoon.

One column was heading towards the 1st Guards who numbered around 1,000. They lay out of sight but could hear the sound of thousands of marching feet and roars of Vive l'Empereur'. When they were 40 paces away, Wellington shouted Now Maitland. Now's your time!' When the Guards sprang to their feet they were in four ranks. The front rank opened fire, killing 300 Frenchmen. The other ranks repeated this, combined with a barrage of grapeshot from the artillery, the Imperial Guard wavered and tried to fall back. Then Lord Saltoun led a charge of the 1st Guards which routed their French counterparts. The invincible' Imperial Guard was routed. The cry went up throughout the French army that the Guard were retreating. The whole of the British force swept forward and drove the enemy back across the valley and up the opposite slope. Cavalry and infantry, tired as they were pursued them off the field of battle. Even the weary Guards from Hougoumont joined in.

The casualty figures for the 1st Guards Brigade on the 18th June were, 4 officers and 131 other ranks killed, 11 officers and 346 other ranks wounded.

No Napoleonic unit marched into battle with more confidence and promise of military glory than the Imperial Guard. They embodied the physical strength and bravery that characterized anciet warriors. Chandler writes that the Imperial Guard was "one of the most celebrated military formations in history."
The Guard drew extra pay and allowances, they got better housing and enjoyed the highest prestige. Discipline was high, it was forbidden to brawl at the canteens or get drunk. The history of Napoleon's Guard is short but very colorful. A parallel unit appeared in 1796, when the newly installed Directory created a Maison for itself of 120 infantry grenadiers and an equal number of mounted ones, plus a 25 piece band drawn from the Paris Conservatory of Music. For his November 1799 coup d'etat, Napoleon used the Garde du Corps Legislatiff to chase its former employers out of the windows. He then combined it with the equally cooperative Guard of the Directory into a Garde des Consuls and added the guides he had brought back from Egypt."

2e Grenadiers Holding back the British at Waterloo

2e Grenadiers Marching at Waterloo

In 1804 after his crowning, Napoleon transformed the Consular Guard into the Imperial Guard (Garde Imperiale). Also the so-called Velites were formed. The Velites were sort of enlisted volunteers to remedy the last evil by drawing from them instead of the army. They were required to be young men of family. This was to obtain a certain amount of education and character, with which is usually joined a sense of honor. Allured by the splendid renown of Napoleon, dazzled by his numerous victories, young men flocked to the ranks of Velites. The infantry of the Guard also acquired more foreign elements. Thee Velites of Florence received Guard status in 1809, those of Turin in 1810. In 1809 the Guard participated in all great battles. At Aspern-Essling the infantry of Old Guard deployed from 3-rank deep line into a thick skirmish line and took advantage of numerous canals and ditches. They closed to the 50 Austrian guns and delivered a volley. It was a shocking surprise to the Austrian gunners, they limbered up and hastily withdrew all 50 guns to a position where stood the Austrian cavalry. The Guard fusiliers and Guard tirailleurs stormed the village. At Wagram despite extremely heavy artillery fire the Guard stubbornly held their ground. When casualties in the 102-gun battery reached critical point Napoleon called for 20 corporals and privates from each company of the Old Guard infantry regiments to fill up the gun crews. Coignet said everyone wanted to go. The increase of Guard came in 1810 from the incorporation of the Dutch Royal Guard.  The Guard's glory shined in every battle, even their final defeat at Waterloo.

Regiments / 8. Brandenburgische Infanterie-Regiment - Recruiting NA
« on: August 29, 2016, 05:16:04 am »

Für das Vaterland

With the massive proliferation of muskets and fusils in the infantry units from the middle of 17th century the battlefield was dominated by linear tactics, according to which the infantry was aligned into long thin lines and fired volleys. Line tactics required a strict discipline and simple movements, practised to the point where they became second-nature. During training, the drill and corporal punishments were often used.  Line infantry composed the basis of land armies. During the Napoleonic Wars it used four types of formations in its battles: the line, the square, the skirmish chain and the column. In 1806 Prussia had 60 regiments of line infantry, each of 2 musketier battalions and 2 grenadier companies. In the same time there were only 24 fusilier battalions.

Napoleon defeated the Prussian army in 1806. It shocked the Prussian establishment, which had largely felt invincible after the Frederician victories. While Stein and Hardenberg began modernizing the Prussian state, Scharnhorst and others began to reform the military, including the downsized by Napoleon Prussian infantry.
Dismayed by the populace's indifferent reaction to the 1806 defeats, the reformers wanted to cultivate patriotism within the country. Serfdom was abolished in 1807 and local city government was initiated in 1808. The officer corps was reopened to the middle class in 1808. Corporal punishment was by and large abolished.

After the defeat of 1806, the 8tes formed with many other new Prussian regiments to fight in every major battle of the Napoleonic Wars, including Waterloo. Soundly beaten at Ligny, the 8tes and the Prussian Army marched to aid Wellington in his struggles at Waterloo. The 8tes was placed in reserve and later used to help support Wellington's right flank against a small french counter attack of infantry. After the battles of Ligny and Waterloo, the 8tes Brandenburgisches regiment disbanded.

Guten Tag

Welcome the 8tes thread! We welcome any Napoleonic Wars player to the regiment, regardless of skill. We have an age requirement of 15 and a teamspeak 3 requirement. Joining the 8tes will put you at the rank of Kadet in which you will stay at that rank for roughly 2 weeks. The aim of our regiment is to become successful on and off the battlefield. We pride ourselves on extreme organization and quality officers that can train our Kadets into experience Prussian soldiers. If you're looking for a regiment that goes to well established events and has stable officers, the 8tes is the place for you! Für das Vaterland!
